Actually, that 72 year old guy did get his rank from actual fighting. It's part of the test. But yeah, I'd love to see some shaolin masters take on like actual fighters, especially ones that are bigger and stronger and fast too.

Yea I agree and these spots you mentioned are spots were more nerves are in the same place, when you hit that spot, one's brain is overwhelmed with information and shuts down, one of these spots are under the arm near the armpit, on the neck, near the knee etc.

I wasn't sure it was Master Shi De Yang's school until I saw him towards the end of the video. This is not actually filmed in the Shaolin Temple itself, but in Master De Yang's school which is actually located near the Temple itself.

Very true. You cant expect to be a good fighter if you dont spar. But they do actually spar with other monks all the time They have an hour or 2 a day of it. Just watch some videos here on youtube it has a day in the life of a monk kind of documentry. And there is no one in the world who trains as hard as monks its crazy.

@munchichi8 its not dead, just rare sadly. Many great masters took their knowledge out of china and in quite a few cases to the grave. I'm lucky enough to study a branch of Northern Shaolin under a wise Sifu, and he often tells us that many schools have either watered down their standards or simply faded. He has also openly stated the temple no longer teaches true Shaolin. Its sad but it only drives me to train harder. My respect to you, live well, train well.

They do have schooling, especially young disciples - in the morning and afternoon, with KungFu practice before and after. School consists of normal ABC's, but with emphasis on Chan (Zen) Buddhist studies. I would say schooling and KungFu are split 50-50 for the young. The older students and the monks split their studies into Chan Buddhism and Kungfu equally as well. Some may branch off into Chinese medicine or languages even. Kungfu practice is long and hard - but they still find time to study.

In some cases but no it comes down to the art, to say it's the fighter completely undermines the point of why martial arts was created which was to help weaker fighters defend against stronger ones.

The best part is that me nd him we fight soo hard until we bruce are selfs and blood on are selfs the fight lasts 30 mins max id say. i enjoy the fight because we both dont feel pain even if we bleed or bruce. and also is helping us to keep us in touch with are skills. Fighting is good but it depends. i dont like fighting random people i prefer fighting my freinds because you fight as much but you will love it get me but fighting others destroying them i feel guilty

there are legends, which tell the tale of a shaolin temple and its monks, who were begged for help by a chinese warlord. he were attacked by another brutal king, who came to kill him and his family with a huge army of thousands of warriors. the temple's master sent 5-10 monks, who fought the army of thousands of trained soldiers and finally forced them to turn back home without having reached the first warlords village at all. it's a legend, but any legend has it's true root...

It does, by saying it's he fighter not the style you're basically saying that there should be no need for martial arts. The difference between people who know martial arts and those who don't is the knowledge, and it stands to reason that knowledge is more/less effective than other knowledge for example you can open a bottle far more effectively with your hands rather than your feet. And depending on the style it's not unfair to say you can end a fight more effectively with 'said' technique.

Interesting you say that. I take Kung Fu here in the states and we were taught very quickly that "Kung Fu" does NOT mean "Martial Art(s)" Kung Fu is the efficiency in which you do things. A result of time and effort.

I believe that both of you make excellent points. Though you are forgetting many many traditional martial arts had developed alongside weapon integrated systems. Take for instance kung-fu's of many origins have weapons and empty hand disciplines factored into both. MMA is a sport certainly, though very effective, it is not the end of all martial discipline. It's excellent at what its good for, though vs a weapon, multiple people? I dont know, keep an open mind theres no "one" way.

for those who keep saying monks are useless... and what they are doin is stupid well , i dun think they train for the purpose of lyin on spears or gettin hit at the balls those are just ways to show the results of their training. the ultimate goal is prolly to be ready for all kind of situation and be fearless.
