For those who think these were non-handicapped games between Ma Long and Liu Shiwen back in 2021, and wondered why the match was so close, you may have misunderstood what was actually going on. These were in fact warm-up matches between the Chinese men and the Chinese women team at the 2021 Olympics, designed to simulate the competitive settings where one might face a formidable opponent at some critical junctures in a match . What you are watching here was one of those warm-up matches. In the match, each game started with the score of 6-8, in favor of the female player. In other words, Liu Shiwen didn't have to win the first eight points in each game, leaving her to only need 3 more points (to 11) for the win (assuming that Ma Long couldn't catch up and even the score at 10-10 first). Although it may appear as if it was only a two-points advantage (the difference between 8 and 6), in reality the advantage for Liu Shiwen was much, much larger (anyone who truly understands table tennis and/or plays the sport at the competive level will be able to attest to this). In such a situation, Liu was in the position of someone who found herself up in points near the finish line, albeit against a much better opponent, and her goal was to find the strength and the focus to push through for the wins.

Many of the players are practically unknown outside China since they only participate in the local leagues, which are definitely the best and toughest in the world, and have no chance of competing internationally. Their standard is so high that if the rules were to allow unlimited number of players from one country to participate, the reserves from China will most probably beat the teams / players from most other countries participating in the Olympics and China will make a clean sweep of all the medals for single and double.

The levels only looks kind of even because of the handicaps and special rules. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the guys would win in landslides every time if they played full matches.
