Some people think the more expensive the equipment, the better. That's completely wrong. The equipment must fit your level and your style of play. I use Hurricane 3 rubber ($18) and Yinhe W-1 blade ($60) for years. Bought all in the U.S. What's important is the sponge hardness, which is not normally indicated . I was lucky. I asked for and got 40 degree forehand, 39 degree backhand.

Thank you, coach, for excellent series. This episode on H3 vs Tensor has me somewhat confused and it applies to older players and their tactics+equipment (I am 80 y.o. but still nationally ranked). If you agree that (1) you generally win points by a change in spin, speed and/or placement; (2) the 40+ polyball reduces the spin component of this equation; and (3) the reality of older or disabled players is that their mobility is somewhat restricted, then I have used the balsa Dr. Neubauer Titan (or Re Impact Tachi) blade combined with long pips on backhand (GD Cropcircles OX or Mo Wang 2 OX) and until now, H3 on FH. With a close to table style putting time pressures on opponent, the tactics are to use the long pips to force a winning forehand attack. Your video has me now concerned that age and a close-to-table style cannot provide a hard forehand stroke and I may, as a result, be better off with a tensor type inverted on my forehand for the resulting "short" forehand stroke. Your reply and comments are always welcomed and appreciated. Richard

Thank you for such an educational video. I learned a lot about my own game now. I used Chinese rubber (729 SST, DHS H2), and I noticed that I play so much better when I hit very hard, and the spin and speed is unmatched. Your charts were very helpful. While I am still younger, I will continue using the Chinese rubber, but as I get older, maybe I have to consider using a tensor style Chinese rubbers like 729 Higher. Thank you, one of the best videos on Chinese rubber.

I use chinese TT rubbers since 1982. From old Friendship 729 over DHS PF 4 to these days with Globe 999. I'm very satisfied and I never will change them. It's individual. The point is just find right combination of sponge hardness and elasticity. Upper layer is always same with superb stickiness and longevity.

I am trying to comment with English. I agree with your statement about why pro chinese players are using Chinese Rubber for forehand. But for backhand, Wang nan(retired ), Ma long, Fan zhendong, Xu xin (he used to ), Shang kun, Yan an, those top player all use Chinese sticky rubber for backhand. Espically in 40+ time, more and more Chinese top players switch their backhand to sticky rubbers.why? because it can give them more power and speed in 40+ ball. I mean no matter forehand and backhand, you choose rubber base on what you need and what technical you have. Chinese rubber are sticky so the sponge of Chinese rubber are hard (otherwise no speed) as well as the weight of Chinese rubber are heavy. The advantage of Chinese rubber: easy to return short, serve spin, powerful looping and price is cheaper compare with ESN rubbers and Tenegry. By the way, in my experience ESN tensor Rubber or Japanese rubbers are better for amauter players although I am from China and I am use to use sticky rubbers, coach Wu jinping (Ma lin, Wang hao and Fan zhendong's coach) have same statement as well(he told to fans in a video). By by the way , I strong believe for a amauter palyer, good rubbers are much important than a top blade. I hope you guys can understand my English^_^ I try my best.

Hi Aaron, I really like your comment. For the new poly ball 40+, the high tension rubber such as Tenergy 05 is not fast enough, so nowadays, the players tend to use harder rubber for the Backhand. We understand your English, very clear. Thank you.

Most of the chinese proplayers play chinese rubber on FH but on BH tensor rubbers : Tenergy 05,64, Andro RasantGrip, Rakza 7, Donic Bluefire M2 or Donic Barracuda ! The most frequented sponge hardness on FH : 6-8 ,on BH : 5-6.5 ! The most Chinese players need this catapult effect on BH side from tensor rubbers. The ball feeling of your equipment is determined by the hardness of your rubber ! It is not an accepted combination slow blade with extreme speedy rubber , most of the players choose a OFF- OFF or OFF+ blade with a speedy rubber .But not always max sponge rubber !! Often you can not read about anywhere whether the player use a max sponge or only 1.9mm or even thinner ! Equipment is important but over-emphasized ! You are a beginner : you have to learn everything but at low speed ! After practicing a period of time you have to change your speed because speed is an important elment in table tennis . Speed is the spin too! Because the spin is the rotation SPEED of the ball ! No doubt : whose reaction is quicker that has an advantage ! But there is a limit in speed you are able to controll and you have to know your limits . There is a too speedy equipment for all players ( for the profis too ) But proplayers know their limits and so they can their play controll . Speed is an important factor but other factors : strategies and tactics are important too.

Simply put, the hard, high-speed sponge means the dwell-time on the rubber is short. It's the speed then that is the independent variable that drives the choice of stickiness, the dependent variable. Against a fast, very spinny, loop, tacky rubber is essential or else the ball is just _rubbing_ (dynamic friction) on the rubber, wasting energy, and it comes off the rubber so quickly that a full reversal and counterspin is less successful. Tacky rubbers exploit _static_ friction. The ball is seized, hand-cuffed, and made to reverse its spin by sheer force. When I played in the 70's, the tacky rubbers appeared, and I switched to the fastest, tackiest rubber available, and a fast heavy racquet. This was hard to control so for several months I used the same bat, but Tackiness _chop_ (in those days Tackiness rubbers _were_ sticky). This was too slow to win many games, but I learned to focus on extreme consistency and stroke production, and counter-looping was ridiculously easy on bh and fh. Also did a lot of heavy-weight training swinging forehands and backhands with a barbell, and learned the fundamental importance of high-mass/low velocity (body,shoulders) momentum transfer to low-mass/high velocity at the hand/blade business end. Then went to fast tacky rubbers and had little trouble. Because of stylistic ideals ( _never_ push, always 3- 5- ball, flip short returns, loop-kill long returns, etc) I remained around 15th in my province, but had about as fast a drive and counterlooping game on _both_ sides as any of the provincial team. All this to say that you _should_ get Chinese rubber and probably for both sides if you are young and have good coaching and training available (which I didn't have). Fast racquet, fast sponge, tacky rubber. All of it. Don't think about it. Iron out any problems and adapt to the best (genuine, not fake) equipment, and don't keep switching around from this to that.

reverse penholder here, i play with donic bluefire m1 backhand and DHS neo H3 on forehand on a Double FIsh STx carbon blade, but used to have donic bluefire m3 on FH, had to adapt specially on serves, feel is different, loops are easier IMO, just totally made a difference as i am a hard hitter, and in exchanges first attack was on the table but 2nd and 3rd were harder to keep on, but with Neo H3 i can just keep going and harder i hit, spinier it gets and stays on the table. - a proud canadian RPH player :)

I use Hurricane III blue sponge provincial for more than three years. I love it. It gives best combination of control, spin and speed. I used to play with Tenergy 05. Although very fast rubber I could not control very fast loops and I was struggling to keep the ball inside the table. With Hurrican I can loop very fast with my whole body and give crazy spin to the ball and still be sure ball comes down and hit the table.

Chinese player here. DHS company does provide official version of Provincial and National Hurricane3, and they can be easily fonud in their official shops in several E-Commerce platform (such as JD, TaoBao, etc). The problem is that it's difficult for foreign players to buy these rubbers from chiese e-commerce platform, due to the language barrier and international transportation and import tax. BTW, the quality control of DHS rubber is also bad, you can find a good normal H3 or a bad National H3. But after all, H3 costs only about $15, while Tenergy and Dignics cost $70, almost 5 times of normal H3

5:20 That's what I noticed as well with my Tenergy 05! There is a point where you just can't apply more force to the ball. When I hit it too hard it seems like the ball starts floating without any additional spin. I noticed that I don't have that problem with harder rubbers like the Tibhar Evolution MX-S which is basically the hardest European rubber you can get. The Chinese rubbers are well more suited for athletic hard hitting players which I consider myself, BUT you need an excellent footwork to play with those rubbers. The Tenergy 05 is just more reliable when your position to the ball is a little off and it suits my playstyle better even though I reach that force limit sometimes. It just happens too rarely. I like those spinny opening topspins and they're much easier to play with the T05 than with a Hurricane 3 f.ex. You have to play differently with Chinese rubbers. I think I could play with such a rubber, but there's almost no way to get a real national version of the DHS rubbers here in Europe. The tensor rubbers are also a lot easier to play and you don't have to boost them. I would still love to know how Ma Long's racket plays, just to get an idea of the Chinese equipment. I am sure it's great for powerful high risk shots, short game and serving. It's probably very hard to use in the passive game (blocking, soft countering, pushing), on flip shots and spinny opening topspins. Great video, you actually said all these things, so I almosted repeated everything, haha.

Hey, thanks again for another great video! I've been trying to use my leg strength to hit the ball, my performance during training has improved, but I still find it difficult to apply the technique during match play. Hopefully I'll sort this out soon! :) I'd like to ask your opinion about factory tuned rubbers, such as DHS' NEO series, Yinhe's Big Dipper, etc. Are they worth it? Do we have to retune them often? Or is it ok to buy a classic chinese rubber and play without tuning? And what about chinese-euro hybrids such as Xiom's Vega China and Tau, Palio's Thors, Yasaka's Rising Dragon, Stiga's Genesis...?

I also have noticed that tenergy rubbers hit hard with low force, but kinda stay the same with high force. Maybe Kenta Matsudaira uses tenergy to make his block extra powerful because the ball will really bounce off with little effort? on backhand I'm not sure of using a tensor because I also play very hard on backhand and have no trouble playing topspin with it with a chinese rubber.

Hello, Before I watched your videos I bought a Nittaku Acoustic Carbon Inner blade with Xiom Vega Pro max on one side and Xiom Vega Euro 2.0 on the other side. I started 8 months ago and I have been playing or practicing with a ball machine every day for 8 months. My coach says I am now playing at about 1600 and that I have improved faster than he has ever seen. However, I am 58 years old and I am not sure if I am fit enough to commit to a complete power game for 6 matches in a day. I do like playing all aspects of table tennis so my nature is more all around but if someone starts to bully me I want to use the power game to neutralize them. My weakest area is close to the table due to slow preparation, anticipation and recognition of what the opponent has hit to me. My technique is fairly solid but only when I have prepared well. From what you are saying I have the wrong rubbers and possibly the wrong blade. This blade is supposed to be off- or off. Should I change this blade? Or should I put a Chinese medium hard rubber on this Nittaku blade (if so which do you suggest?) or what else might you suggest? I currently have a new sheet of Rakza 7 soft 2.0 , 2 Kokutaku Blutenkirsche 898, 2 Yinhe Mercury 2 2.0 and two sheets of DHS National Hurricane 3 Rubber for $30 each ( I know these are counterfeit but I bought them before I watched your videos).

Playing with a cheap pre-built wood racket is probably the best way for young/poor players to develop for using hurricane 3. The rubber provides a very similar throw angle, and you have to learn good technique in order to catapult the ball yourself instead of using short stroke and letting the sponge provide too much of the power

So, even If I am lucky enough to get an authentic Chinese rubber like provincial or national ones, is it more recommended to use a booster as the graph shows? Is it normal for top players to use a booster with Chinese rubbers? Some or many tournaments have regulations for players to use it. I found some good advantages to use even commercial Hurricane neo 3 and 8 and really liked both, but some kind of limits exist in terms of elasticity and control. This is why I wonder if the booster could help play a fast rally or could generate low-arc drive balls when you loop kill. Thank you for a nice video about the Chinese rubber.

Hi, very useful video, thanks. What do you think about adding paraffin oil to the rubbers? I did it to my bluefire m1 and acuda S3 and they feel tackier...
@pingsunday
@pingsunday 7 жыл бұрын
No don't use parrafin oil on m1 and acuda s3. the tackiness is just instant, but it vary the quality of the rubber. :( no no no, don't do that.

Ok, but in what way would vary the quality? And: parafin oil would be right to use in another kind of rubbers?

Hey EmRatThich! Thanks for this great video, my table tennis have gotten much better, because of your videos! Currently i have been playing table tennis with Chinese rubbers (LKT Pro XT Green Dragon) with in my forehand and backhand, my forehand is currently better and i use it more than my backhand. This month i will buy tensor rubber to my backhand, because i sometimes have problems, when opponent attacks my wide backhand and i can't attack the ball strongly.

It depends also of your blade. Find a good setup can take time. For your FH, you can try several medium hard rubber on the market, yaska rakza 7 is a safe choice.

I think getting use to what you play with is the key. I think the person's skill, knowledge, and physical ability plays 70 to 80 percent and the blade and rubber makes up the other 20 to 30 percent of one total ability to play. Because a good player that understand the effect of different type of surfaces on balls will tend to be a better over all player. The blade and rubber just refine the person's ability to accomplish the task easier. You can give the worst blade and rubber to a good player who understand the effects of what the blade and rubber behave, he/she can adjust and still play pretty good. You can also give the best rubber and blade to a person and they will only improve a little because the have not master the blade and rubber to its full potential. In general, younger players who's knowledge and skills match that of older top players will win because they have physical endurance. Otherwise the older you are, the wiser you get, and should always dominate. So older players either lacks physical endurance or they find it kind boring they don't play as hard anymore, or both.

I switched from Joola energy xtra to Friendship 729 lightning, I think it has helped as the ball stays on the table when I hit harder, also It has a higher arc then the Joola energy xtra, does that mean its fake (it is a property I like)?

Another useful tip: national H3 rubber has rectangle shape, provincial H3 has Hexagon shape, and normal(commercial) H3 has Octagon shape. If you see someone selling Octagon H3 rubbers and declear them to be provincial/national, you better not to trust him

Hello coach! I use a 5ply wood blade that is not too fast and perfect. First I had Mark V but then switched to Rakza 7 as I wanted something faster. But after seeing so many good reviews on chinese rubbers and that chinese players use this as a forehand loop rubber. I wonder if this would be a good switch. Exactly what I am good at (forehand loop). So I would have a Rakza 7 on my backhand and maybe Hurricane 8 Mid-Hard or Hurricane 3 Neo on my forehand. Any tips if this is a good switch. If I would switch and like that combo I will have it for a long time. So should I switch my forehand rubber to Chinese and which one? Thank you! Greatful for a answer!

Hello! Thanks a lot, the video is great! You noticed in previous video that "Chinese coachs are preparing for the next generation of defender. It is harder now to spin the plastic ball. So it's the era of the "speed" in table tennis in next few years. Chinese are forming a new penholder/pimple attack to fast attack on the table and defend on the backhand. I think this playing style will dominate the table tennis in the near future, especially for the female players. I will analyze this in the next video." Is Mima Ito a good example of this style? She is playing counter driver style and using short pimples on her BH.

thanks for this. makes sense now. I use both of these rubbers and have enjoyed Tenergy 05 on my forehand but I can't slam as well at low throw angles the way I do with Hurricane 3/Neo. I've found I need to take the shot at the height of the bounce or I can't land topspin slams with Tenergy 05. Your breakdown explains why, interesting.

Very good explanation. But sometimes the chinese players switch to the tensor side of the racket for smashes, where in the force curve is that ? So I would never know if the rubber I buy from China is genuine, even for less expensive rubber. I have found that my China bought DHS H3 has lost it's tackiness very quickly.

I reckon Chinese players dominance comes from their hard work and practice makes them so proficient not the Chinese rubber who knows if they were to use tenergy 05 with the same determination and discipline they would be even stronger!

Hi Coach Love your posts - you seem like the most knowledgeable of all the TT bloggers. 😉👍 Based on your blog's an advice I switched my forehand Rubber from tensor to Chinese hurricane 3. At first difficult but then my technique improved very fast and spin is amazing resulting I kick effect plus I love tackiness for serve! BUT, my Killshot is diminished. Even when I hit very hard with hip rotation - it's not as fast as tensor. I prefer how Chinese rubber plays, but need more power. But I do t want to use booster because of health Hazzard and hassle of rebooting constantly! So what to do? Will another Chinese rubber like blue sponge privincial or nittaku h3 really be faster? I do not really want to go back to tensor but the lack of power is a problem! 😥 What do I do? Please help!

When I use Hard chines rubbers, do I need to remove and past the rubber every few days? And may I know which glue is better to past hard chines rubber ?
@esmolol4091
@esmolol4091 5 жыл бұрын
No, the durability on harder Rubber is higher than on soft rubber. Changing a lot is not necessary. And second, don't use illegal voc containing glues. Just use voc free glue like donics glue that looks like milk. VOC glue is ILLEGAL by ITTF rules if you play in competitions. It improves spin and speed, but it's and unfair advantage and will definitely not improve your technique.
