Imho, you forgot to mention (unless I completely missed it) something that is extremely important is how the Gen4 has been redesigned vs the gen3 when it comes to the seals drive side. I owned a gen3 (I ride during the winter) and I actually had to install something called "MudStop" to keep the dirt away. It was a complete mess without it. The motor had to be changed under warranty within 3000kms. Then I changed my bike and naturally went for a Gen4 (4000km before I removed the cranks for the first time and do a bit of cleaning near the seals and crank ring) remained completely clean without adding anything. Even the grease was still clean, so that's a massive pro in favor of the gen4. Now, I switched to a Shimano e8000, which might sound strange coming from a gen4 with the 625wh battery but I could get a Santa Cruz at a bargain and I'm not that sure that the Shimano is a way worse motor.

Depends on motor. Some have clutch/"freewheel" mechanism directly in pedal axis allowing cranks to to rotate it without needing to turn any reduction gears etc. In others you have to "drag" at least part of that motor drive train when exceeding assist speed limit/assist is disabled.

That was an excellent comparison of the Bosch old and new and the Shimano e8000. I'm glad I bought a 2019 Levo with the latest Brose motor! #LovingLevo I was hoping your comparison would have included the levo motor. I have over 1,200 miles on my 2019 Levo and I really am very pleased with its trail manners. I ride a lot of Rocky technical terrain up and down hill. I find that it's very well controlled and I'm entirely familiar with some of the concepts that you were expressing regarding overshoot and how it impacts your technical climbing ability. Prior to buying my levo I also trail-ride tested bikes that had the earlier Bosch cx motor and the e8000. I felt these motors were underpowered and not very well controlled. The Levo's 90Nm of torque is much Appreciated for technical riding.

How would you now the difference between the old and new bosch motors ?
@atnfn4 жыл бұрын
I recently bought a fatbike with a bosch gen 4 Performance Line CX motor. I also have one of the old gen 2 Performance Line CX motor. In my oppinion the difference is HUGE. When I reach 28kph with my "old" (it's just a year old) CX motor it feels like you're pedaling with the brakes on. It's very difficult to go over 28kph, feels like hitting a wall. With the new CX gen 4 motor I can easily reach 32kph and if I tried harder I could probably go faster. The older bike is a regular mountain bike, the new bike is a fatbike but it's still way easier to pedal when the motor is shut off. It's almost a waste of time tuning the gen 4 motors, it doesn't help much, while with the gen 2 motors it feels terrible once you reach the motor assist limit.

I have a bike with the old motor and one with the new. The old bike feels like you hit a wall when the assistance limit is reach. It's as if you turned on the brakes. With the new motor you can easily go faster than the assistance limit. I think you'll regret it if you get one with the old motor, unless you tune the bike to remove the speed limit. The old bike might actually be faster if you remove the speed limit I think the gearing is a bit higher because of the internal gears. But unless you tune the bike you'll never reach those speeds, cause 28kph = wall. Unless you are very fit or going down hill (or something is really wrong with my bike), you ain't going much faster than 28-30kph with the old cx motor.

I'm glad that I live in an area of the world that ebike motors aren't limited to 250W or ever 500W. Listening to manufactures and their paid-for opinions parroted by riders that don't even ride, let alone own the bikes they recommend makes me laugh. They have missed the mark so badly in what the real magic of ebike is and just keep doubling down praying the bike riding world is stupid enough to "buy-in"... literally! These bikes are designed and built to sell more than they are to ride. This may be ok for riding in Amsterdam or anywhere in Europe but it's not what Americans want, not this America anyway but I don't ride in herds. I haven't seen a single production ebike I would buy at 1/2 price let alone the full price.
