Wow, I am from Colombia and I am astonished to see how much you know about Colombian history and Gabriel García Márquez. I appretiate that a lot. You are absolutely right, the forced displacement phenomenon depicted in the movie was brought from La violencia from the 1950's, something that sadly still haunts hundreds of families who live in the countryside. In regards to the culture, everything is perfect as it should since Lin Manuel and the movie creators spent weeks in my country visiting places and getting everything right. Here's a short list of the very subtle references I can recall now: The way everyone dance, the game the villagers play at the beggining (tejo), the "noche de las velitas" (candle night) we celebrate on December 7th, everyone lights candles and kids play with flares, the fact that kids drink coffe (never dark though, latte instead), Antonio's ceremony looks like catholic first communion where kids are dressed in white and hold a candle, how suprestitious we are, the fact that moms want to cure everything with food, the music we play in parties and my favorite: how we point to things with our lips (Mirabel does it when she's under the bed with Antonio). Now, to me the whole movie is a metaphor to the roles we play in our families: the strong one who takes the burden of responsibility, the one who shapeshifts to please everybody, the one who listens to everybody and knows it all (chismoso we call it), the one who becomes the perfect son/daughter to make the family proud, Bruno would be the outcast or black sheep who does not fit and has to leave despite loving their family and finally Mirabel, the one who feels lesser than the rest but in the end glue everyone together. The house is the family itself and if there's something that has bled our country that's fractured houses. We really need more brothers and sisters hugging their parents and ancestors, forgiving and looking up to the future so we can finally see all those yellow butterflies shine and fly. Thank you for your lovely review!

that's so nice. As someone who really relates to Isabelle, I really liked that they shifted from the outsider perspective towards her own. I think they presented well that you often can be seen as arrogant or stuck up by others although all you do is for everyone else. while it seems at the beginning as if she only cares about herself the opposite is what she is doing and intending. I liked how Mirabel and her relationship was. From what I experienced with my sister it is really realistic how they portrayed that. I really love about this movie that they go deeper than the typical archetypes of the strong female character and the perfect , mean girl and showed what comes along with being that way

This is so true xD I like to think that they actually envy each other for the exact same (but opposite) thing. I honestly loved her at first sight. Everything else about her just sealed the deal-- her awesome redemption arc song, that expressive incredulity when she yells "Have you lost your mind?!", the fact that she had a life-changing and self-affirming revelation because of a cactus, her sheer manic joy during "All of You", the actual objective fact that she has the most powerful and versatile gift of all the Madrigals, all of the hints at her real dynamic with Abuela and the foreshadowing of her eventual character development (much of it in her expressions and body language, which is so compelling in a character who's supposed to be a perfect poised princess), the complexities of Mirabel's feelings about her (...) just so much to love.

I'm not colombian but I'm peruvian, and as a fellow latina I'm so happy for my brothers and sisters from this beatiful country. I love Disney for making Coco and Encanto because it shows the variety of our cultures, even though we have strong similarities. I like the message f the movie and how it manages to brought it up colombian tradition, history and literature. Something I have read was that the movie had an inspiration in "Cien años de soledad" by Gabriel García Márquez, because it shows "realismo mágico" in the creation of the candle, and how "la familia Madrigal" is like "familia Buendia", and the town Encanto is Macondo in the book. If anyone wants to dabble into colombian, or latinamerican stories, reading One Hundred Years of Solitude is a must. It is a classic book of universal literature and so beatiful in many ways.

The negative representation of Colombians in media, particularly as drug dealers had lead to a lot of bullying, personally I was nicknamed "cocaine" when first coming to the US and I've seen plenty fellow Colombians try to hide their culture to prevent discrimination. I'm incredibly glad for this movie, I see myself in these characters and their culture. The simple things like the food, the greeting kiss on the cheek, the coffee for everyone, the dancing the large amount of people, particularly family members. @Darkphoenix88883 жыл бұрын
I think the cracks and dying of the miracle represent the gap between the family members mostly the relation of mirabel with the family and abuela cuz the miracle was born from sacrifice out of love for the family... The cracks first appear when she feels disconnected from the family .....when she embraces her sister those cracks disappear and the candle burns brighter ( the family bond grows stronger) And then again when mirabel and abuela argue they are not on terms with each other abuela cares more about the magic of the miracle then the family while mirabel wants to save the miracle for the sake of the family ...both of them argue and blame each other for the reason of the dying miracle ...the crack forming between them towards the candle symbolises their relationship being broken and that being the cause that extinguishes the candle At the end when abuela and mirabel understand each other and fix their broken bond abuela reunites with bruno and changes her perspective, the whole familys bond gets stronger as they rebuild the house and their broken bond...... mirabel being the spark that lits up the miracal again cuz shes the glue that holds the family together ....thers no magical candle at the end as long as the "bond between the family stays stonger" the miracle will not die cuz that is the miracle the powers and gifts are birthed from the miracle to protect the family
@agenttheater53 жыл бұрын
Apparently they deliberately left the question of why Miracle didn't get a gift open to interpretation - I'm with those who reckon that she was already given a gift or just had as a personality trait of empathy and compassion so the candle figured that she didn't need a more obvious (outwardly that is) gift or felt that not giving her a door was a way for her to show it - ie her staying in the nursery with Antonio and being able to comport and support him because of that. Though I agrees someone should've given her a proper room.

I tend to go with 'she doesn't have a gift' because so much of the story is emphasizing that even though she doesn't have a gift and can't do things her family can do, she still has value and importance and makes her family and community better. For me, her having a gift would completely undermine that. I don't like when a movie that's about accepting and valuing people who are different or who might be assumed to be 'lesser than' suddenly pulls the "oh but actually they aren't different in that way! They were secretly 'normal'/'better' the whole time!". It feels like it actually works against what they're trying to do. Mirabel spends the whole beginning of the movie wanting a gift and thinking she needs one, but by the end has grown and sees that that's not important to her self-worth. By interacting with her family, she also learns that with the way the family was functioning at the time, a gift isn't a guarantee of happiness on its own. Having a gift or not is largely irrelevant at the end (shown by other family members being happy both without their gifts and when they have them back), what matters is being a family, communicating, changing for the better, and not having someone's self-worth bound up in their gift.

Anyone who waves back at Casita is immediately my friend. Also, my thoughts: the thing I loved most about this Disney movie that made it so different from their previous ones is that they work really hard to make ALL the family characters center stage. Way more than the typical 1-3 characters! And that means that people can relate to the movie in TOTALLY different ways! My best friend and I both adore this movie and related to it so much -- but for completely opposite reasons! She related strongly to Mirabel and "Waiting on a Miracle", because she's still trying to figure out who she wants to be and what she wants to do with her life. But everyone else in her family (including me) have already figured out our talents and are all very driven go-getter Type A people. So she hardcore related to Mirabel feeling left behind by her gifted powerful family. But I related hardcore to Luisa and "Surface Pressure", because even though it seems like I've got everything together -- because I know pretty well who I am and where I'm going with my life -- I live with _so much pressure_ that I put on myself AND that other people expect of me. Those are completely different ways to relate to a single movie. It's groundbreaking for Disney.

Right now I'm guessing that because she had three children to raise on her own and she never went back to the river either because she never felt ready to do so or because she didn't have time to do so she wasn't able to properly mourn Pedro. And maybe she even started focusing on the family being 'perfect' and focused on the miracle that took place afterwards so that she wouldn't have time to focus on his actually being killed or on the fact that she still misses him and would've wanted to live a regular life with him and their children even with no gifts, no miracles and no magic. And because she hasn't been able to face that memory properly and hasn't been able to mourn him properly she hasn't been able to move on with the next stage of her life properly.

I especially like the part where you mentioned when the cracks started and the "acceleration" with Mirabel makes sense and then "build on a stronger foundation" as they're starting anew, also your take on "We Don't Talk About Bruno" (nice singing btw) and talking a bit more about Bruno and his perspective, even down to you mentioning Mirabel first just wanted that hug in a forced way to fix the miracle but then she was more genuinely supportive to her sister so that the hug happened in a more natural way. All of these and more was just **chef's kiss**. (Yes, Camilo's "7-feet-tall" was just something he picked up as a small child, 5 or something, from stories depicting his uncle as some type of boogeyman and he just rolled with it for 10 years). Btw, thanks for explaining what exactly happened in that traumatic event that Alma and Pedro experienced that led them to flee. I had no idea it was referencing to an actual historical event. A lot of people bring up the thing with Dolores supposedly not hearing Abuela at the candle, but I think with the later context Dolores absolutely heard her, she simply didn't associate what she said with concern for the magic itself. I'm sure the kids grew up hearing several times about the horrors that caused the villagers to flee in the first place, and believed that those horrors likely still existed beyond the mountains created by the candle. Since the family Madrigal has essentially taken the role of caretakers of the whole village, it wouldn't be a stretch that Abuella regularly stresses about the wellbeing of the village, and Dolores has just gotten used to overlooking it.

loved the movie, love your reaction. i think on a rewatch you see that Mirabel was chosen to be Alma's true heir as matriarch, only without the trauma that causes Abuela to make the mistake of allowing the encanto to become completely dependent on the gifts of the family, and the resultant pressure on them. I think that Dolores was too busy listening to Mariano composing poetry to hear Abuela's confession of the weakness of the miracle. I find it interesting that Bruno's vision wasn't diverging futures, but as he said, all out of order - the hug heals the cracks, but in making up with Isabella, it precipitates the conflict that destroys the Casita - but plants the seeds for its restoration.

i like how this was a inner conflict than, say, the people burning houses and who killed the granddad. it makes sense due to a lot of families trying to keep the "perfect family" image and a family that uses their gifts to help everyone else would need to keep that image though we see the kids want to be kids, how stressed out the ladies are and just how they are treated from the grandmother. i like the story because it's relatable to any family. also, i love "We don't talk about Bruno" one a ... 5th watch now since there are a lot of little hints that were foretold by Bruno like how Isabela would have her powers grow when later we see them literally spawn all kinds of different plants than roses and flowers. little details like that make it worth this many rewatches.

Little "correction": What we witness in Abuela Alma's flashbacks most likely isn't 'La Violencia' since the events took place 50 years before the main story and Encanto is set in the middle of the 20th century. It's far more likely that what' s depicted here is instead the 1000 Days War of 1899-1902.

The more you watch the movie the better it gets, in the scene where Mirabel loses her door, you can see that the candle doesn’t start flickering until after Abuela has doubted her granddaughter, I just freaking love a movie with detail like that, it make me think of Spider-Man ITTSV.
@tayani26953 жыл бұрын
I think the reason Mirabel didn’t get a gift was because of Abuela and the distorted way she saw the magic in. She was not seeing her children and grandchildren as people, but more so as personified gifts, ways the miracle manifested that now must be used correctly. So Abuelo or Casita or the Miracle or whatever you want to name the force granting those gifts went “Here. This is a normal child. This is all you get. Will you still be able to love her?” with Mirabel. And, well. As we could see, initially Abuela failed that test.

I'm not colombian but the thing i liked most about this movie was the representation, everybody hates Isabella character because she is "the princess of the family" but for me it means a Lot to see in a Disney movie a girl like her to be considerated perfect, i have light skin but my face is similar to hers and when i was little i was bullied and called ugly because of that, but now little indigenous girls Will see her and kwow they are pretty as well

If you look at the miracle as being blessings from the grandpa, then he must be heartbroken that the gifts are hurting his family, so he’d rather they didn’t have any unless they fixed things. So when they did fix things and stopped relying on the gifts so much, then they got them back. Like when they were trying to reach the candle, Isabella and Camilo didn’t reach it because each was relaying on their gift to reach it. But Mirabel doesn’t have a gift, so she relied on herself and the house, which helped everyone. Also, not all the cracks are caused by Mirabel. Luisa pretty much explained them in her song. And the cracks during the proposal were all Isabela’s pressure building since she didn’t want to get married. Ofc the family chaos didn’t help. But we see a flower bloom out of control from the cracks and hit Mariano. That’s her pressure trying to get rid of him. Nobody else knew how she really felt, so that couldn’t have been done by anyone else.

Speaking of Dolores and why she didn't directly say anything about Abuela worrying about the magic or Bruno being in the house. I've noticed her whole thing is being out of the spotlight and supporting from the sidelines. Something she probably had to do a lot since she and Seniorita Perfecta Isabela are the same age and grew up in the same house, but Isabela is always the one in the spotlight, has the flashier power, and has the guy she likes. She never tells Mirabel what exactly to do but gives her hints and nudges her in just the right direction. She tells Mirabel that she can always hear Bruno (so he's withing reach, at least) but pulls her away from discovering Bruno in the background so they don't draw attention to him while everyone is around (follow the green light behind the girls during Dolores's bit). Her part is the most sympathetic towards Bruno, too, telling Mirabel that his prophecies are not his fault, that people just didn't understanding them or Bruno himself. She also refers to the "rats in the walls" being worried about the cracks (obvs referring to Bruno and his rats, who've been patching them) and then points Mirabel to Luisa, who has the next piece of the puzzle that Mirabel needs to get to in order to figure out what's going on. Why she doesn't more directly help is likely because she realizes it's something Mirabel needs to solve herself. Mirabel did say that she wanted a chance to prove herself to the family by solving the magic problem. If Dolores just told her what to do and where to go then it wouldn't count. Dolores also probably at least had an idea that Mirabel was in the vision from Bruno muttering about it, but not what the vision itself was - hence why she warned Mirabel not to vilify Bruno or be scared if she ever did discover whatever it was Bruno saw. Or maybe Dolores just lives for The Drama and wanted to see how it all played out.

Brilliant! For the first time I get why Dolores didn't freak until Mirabel described the vision. She only knew what Bruno said out loud!

15:09 -- uh, yeah, that description came from someone who was all of 5 years old at the time, may or may not have any actual memories of the guy, grew up listening to the family rumors, gossip, and legend about him... and appears to be having a good deal of fun seeing how far he can manage to exaggerate the tale. (Boo Radley? Anyone?)

Wow, this is really a good review! I've been obsessively watching Encanto reactions, and this one really stands out as excellent, not only in the depth and breadth of your reflections at the end, but also in the rhythm of how you cut in and out of clips and reactions. You managed to reflect the flow of the movie better than many.

Really wonderful, honest reaction. Glad it touched your heart as much as it did mine! I was sobbing like a baby through the last fifteen minutes, and Bruno’s PLATE. Ugh oh god. I am so impressed with how much you picked up on right away, and your knowledge of Gabriel García Márquez!!! This story definitely pays homage to One Hundred Years of Solitude in some ways. Awesome analysis, a pleasure to hear your thoughts and revelations. 10/10 reaction for a 10/10 film.✌🏼

Great reaction 😀. I'm Colombian and I'm so happy that Disney is showing our culture to the world to see. A lot of people see us for all the wrong reasons, thanks to the news, tv, netflix (narcos) and of course Pablo Escobar. That was our dark side but Colombia has a gorgeous side as well. Colombia is the most biodiverse country per km in the world. We have beautiful landscapes, like the beautiful Cocora Valley, with its tall palm trees, Caño Cristales where the river turns from an ordinary river to a colorful one, just absolutely beautiful. We have 2 oceans, the Andes mountain range with some snowcapped volcanoes. We have deserts, flatlands ( Llanos Orientales) and to the south the great Amazon Jungle. We have lots of birds and butterflies species, amphibians, mammals etc, etc. Our gastronomy is great. I saw in the movie arepas, buñuelos, Ajiaco soup etc. The way they dressed is very typical. Mirabel's skirt, the Sombrero Vueltiao, ruanas, etc and our music is second to none. We have other 1,000 rhythms, I don't think any other country have that many. I hope people visit Colombia. Thank you Disney for making this film based in my country and I absolutely love the movie 😀😀😀😀

I watched this movie with a Colombian friend and what she got from most of the movie are a mix from all Colombia since the country is so big and bast, but she mostly felt the setting was on the coast, I'm Guatemalan but I found so much of Latin American culture in this movie, I found way more relatable things in this movie than in Coco since in that movie most of the time they spend it un a fictional setting.

I do think Mirabel is the living manifestation of the candle, and thats why Casita came back to life when she led the community in building their casita. The candle gave life to Casita, the same way Mirabel gave life to it at the end.
