That’s actually really smart tbh, I agree with you that Dos Orguitas is one of the best out of bunch in Encanto with how beautiful, yet a little sad the song is underneath especially in the scene where Mirabel and to an extent the audience see Alma’s trauma un-sanitized.

Isabella's character stood out to me: She starts off being portrayed as the stereotype of the Disney Princess who is beautiful, graceful, and the town's resident handsome guy is in love with her. Her gift is described as "being perfect" and the only one who Bruno predicted would have a brilliant future (much to Mirabel's frustration). Yet the moment she admitted that she only went along with being proposed by the town's resident handsome man was for the family, and inexplicably created a cactus instead of her usual blooming flowers, it finally clicked that everyone including Isabella completely misinterpreted her gift, her actual gift was being able to create and control plants, and the "perfect" label she was brought up with was actually the bad vision Bruno predicted.

To me, Isabela was also a subversion of the flawless princess trope. Disney has plenty of princesses and it's a recurring theme that becoming such is basically a dream come true. Then here comes Isabela, who is a princess in nearly every way except the title yet she doesn't like any of that or the constant pressure to always look perfect.

I was told that there's a novelization of the movie that is not only in mirabels pov, but Luisa and Isabellas as well and the book explains that Isabella doesn't hate mirabel for always getting in the way and messing things up, but she's actually jealous of mirabel because since mirabel didn't get a gift, she doesn't have the same weight and expectations like Isabella. Mirabel could blow up the whole town and it wouldn't be surprising cuz its mirabel, what else is new. Isabella on the other hand has to be perfect all the time and gets a degrading look with even the tiniest slip up, look at when Dolores says the guy wants a lot of kids and Isabella sprouts a bunch of flowers. Abuela comes over talking about how everything has to be perfect during the proposal, then rips out the 1 discolored flower in Isabellas hair. Isabella doesn't hate mirabel, she resents mirabels freedom because anything less than perfection means Isabella failed

Dispite how overrated it is, the true brilliance of "We Don't Talk about Bruno" is that clearly the family WANTS to talk about Bruno, but feels pressured not to (maybe they feel it'll upset Alma, maybe they're afraid of facing those negative feelings) and so, despite insistence that they shouldn't (especially Pepa) they all jump on the first opportunity to do so. Thus enforcing the film's message of suppressing feelings and not communicating being not great.

I hate the total condemnation of Alma because people seem to forget that she’s one of the few “abusers” in cartoon history that learned to STOP inflicting her trauma on others in harmful ways. She apologized and worked to rebuild the family’s foundations. She recognized that she was actively hurting the family and spent months fixing the house and in turn the family, allowing time to REALLY heal. Which is a hell of a lot more than the stupid snapshot redemptions of all the TRULY monstrous abusers in poorly written forgive and forget cartoons over the past decade.

You know something I like? Alma, the one representing older generations and their need to supress emotions on themselves and the younger henerations, is given an explanation not an excuse. You understand and are simpathetic on what she did but you also know that what she is doing is wrong, and when she figures it out too its organic and feels fair. Shes not given cuddles in spite of her abuse but she IS given the emotional attention she needed to drop her mask This is how you do an "abuser" (for lack of a better word) who isnt purely evil and has actual good intent

I dont think alma ever meant to hurt her family i think she just thought she was doing what was best for the community, the encanto, and her family by giving everyone in her linieage weight on their backs they cannot bear. And because of this her family came to resent her for all that shes done. Thankfully mirabel came to call her out on her bs and set things straight so alma could get the picture that she was the reason why the magic was dying.

I imagine Mirabel feels less scared to disappoint Alma because, despite desiring her approval, she already feels she's disappointing her. That's her emotional drive for the scene where she and Alma yell at each other, since she's seen real, tangible proof that she's helping the family (the candle glowing brighter), the thing she's been striving her whole life, the thing Alma asks her to do at the very beginning of the film, and Alma still treats her like she's done something wrong. She realizes everything she's been working for the last decade has basically been pointless (at least on the Alma front) and that's why she snaps so hard. But she does love Alma, and what Alma went through was horrible, and that's why she can so easily forgive her when she sees Alma really is sorry for hurting them. And then when Alma thanks Mirabel by saying she was sent from Pedro, the person she loved so dearly and has been asking for help from for decades despite him being dead that....just...Fuuuuck... "I asked my Pedro for help. Mirabel, he sent me you." just really Fucking gets me every time. oH MY gOsH THis MoVie iS SOOoOoOo gOod aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!

I love this film and all the symbolism behind it. Notice that the first cracks are shown with Luisa who is allegedly the "strongest" in the family. Whereas, despite being shunned and ignored, Bruno is constantly working behind the scenes trying to hold the family together by patching the cracks. My only nitpick is that Bruno deserved more of an apology from everybody else who actively villainized him despite being just a messenger. Finally, for those who don't speak Spanish, "Alma" translates to "Soul". Alma Madrigal is aptly named so because she is the soul of the family, and the most influential, for better or worse.
@aazhie
@aazhie 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, though I expect getting to come back into the family like a real member is an awesome relief, and Bruno may not require a huge formal apology. Some people do not need a speech, or public acknowledgment. I am a behind the scenes type person and public appreciation is really embarrassing to me. A public apology (or in-movie) apology is kind of more old school Disney than this movie, which acknowlwdges that different folks prefer different strokes...

Maybe someone mentioned it further down, but one thing I'd noticed that Alma's miracle was a massive, stone mountain range: A stone wall to shut out what caused her pain and gave her refuge. Things didn't get better until it opened up and she returned to the site where her husband was killed and she started talking to someone about it.

I really hate it when people call Abuela Alma the "villain" of Encanto. Most people fail to grasp that Villain and Antagonist are not one in the same. A Villain is an Antagonist but the Antagonist is not always the Villain. Yes, Alma is the antagonist of the film because her actions are what drive the conflict of the film and bring her into conflict with Mirabel, our protagonist. However, anyone with two brain cells can see that her actions are motivated not by malice but by the trauma she suffered. Being forced out of your home by hostile guerilla fighters and watching the love of your life be brutally murdered right in front of you isn't fun or quirky in the slightest. It's horrific and is guaranteed to leave some kind of mental scars that will influence your personality and actions. Alma became hell-bent on preserving the magic of the miracle and the Encanto to protect her family and community from the chaos of the outside world but became misguided, developing tunnel-vision and becoming blind to the trauma she's passed down and the damage she was unintentionally doing to her family, especially Mirabel and Isabela. I love that the film portrays her actions in a realistic way and does not make her into a generic, evil for shits and giggles villain. A lot of people on Tumblr and Twitter are pissy that Mirabel forgave Alma so quickly but forget/overlook the fact that Alma acknowledged and took responsibility for the damage she's been doing to her family for so many years. She was genuinely remorseful, wanted to change for the better and was actively making an effort to do so. This made me love Alma Madrigal because Disney could have gone the cliche route of making her unrepentant but I'm glad they didn't. You were right in that some people just can't enjoy a movie/tv show without a clear cut villain or boring, angsty white boy to glom onto so they derive any semblance of enjoyment out of. Love this film, 11/10.

My personal view on this: When people say the ending was "too happy" and it felt rushed. And how the family all moved one so quickly. I disagree with that The family didn't immediately just move on. But they are on the PATH and START of healing and changing their ways for the future generations. I can see why people think the ending lost its meaning with the family getting the magic back and how it "missed the point of the message". But if that where the case then Mirabel would have gotten one too but she didn't.They got their gifts back but the major difference is that they now have a new mindset. A new goal and new ways to now grow together. And have a new view on how they use their gifts. Pepa dancing in her snow showing she is now embracing her emotions, Isabella discovering what else she can do, Luisa taking a break and relaxing, and others. They will have the gifts but now learned how to use them in a way that it will no longer hurt them anymore

I love that Alma wasn’t making excuses. It wasn’t some lame ‘something sad happened once’ backstory. And she apologized! For hurting her family! That never happens in movies but it really should. I think it's pretty cool that Mirabel & Alma's songs are the only ones out of melody w/ the rest of the family, hinting at their narrative connection and how they're both important to each other -- Alma as the trauma survivor and Mirabel as the one to inherit the brunt of the trauma reactions w/o the context of the violent invent itself. Also, I think it's kinda neat that Alma's solo in The Family Madrigal is accommodated and put into the song itself while Mirabel sings her own solo song in Waiting on a Miracle all alone (besides for Disney Main Character reasons) because the family hadn't thought to accommodate her in general. Just a lil nerdy thing I noticed -- I'm so happy the movie ends with a happy ending and everyone gets a hug.

Something I don't understand is how with other films and shows, whenever there is an emotionally abusive character and everyone ends up having to forgive them (i.e. SU or She-ra), the fanbase doesn't bat an eye, at least not until years later. Meanwhile with this movie, everyone is bashing Alma who, unlike all those other shitty, unforgivable characters, is actually extremely well-written and believable. This film gave us a very real conflict and suddenly now everybody thinks peace was never an option. I've seen tiktoks where people would draw their own alternate endings to the film where the family, mainly Bruno, would never forgive Alma and the family would be completely broken, like the artist WANTS the family to fall apart. This targeting on Alma is just... weird. Why now? Why her?? Also, THANK YOU for the line "If it's part of your culture, it needs to not be part of your culture anymore". My own family and my friends' families all just accept the emotional baggage and secrecy as part of their tradition and it's heartbreaking to see. No one feels they can say anything and are intent to stay quiet until they can leave their home for good. Immigrant parents, neglectful parents, escaping war, the baggage is all so deeply engrained that the damage is irreversible, and because of that, no one has the luxury to let their guard down and just be open about how they feel for once.

For the “Why do people despise Alma?” It’s probably a few things 1. Alma is a brown woman and black/brown characters tend to be more despised by fandoms for less egregious behavior because of racism, subconscious or otherwise. 2. She’s an old woman and the people who are saying she’s an awful person are probably young people projecting their abusive older family members onto her. In some of the fan fiction where the writer portrays her as extremely abusive, there’s a note saying it’s a vent fan fiction. It also is an age where kids won’t really relate to. In She-ra, the notable abusive character (Catra) is younger, so the fans are more likely to sympathize with her behavior because she’s more like them. Ok Boomer sentiment might also be apart of it. While not taking everything older folks say as fact is a good thing, sometimes kids are shitty to their elders for no reason. 3. There’s people who probably watched the criticism of SU and She-ra and agreed that abuser = bad, but do not pay attention what they watch and make bad reads on characters. Like if you look at the fandom and made a ven diagram of the Camilo/Bruno/Isabela stans and the “Abuela literally beats her children” people, it’s literally just a circle.

I genuinely feel like this movie captured the nuances of family relationships better than Coco did, and I loved that movie. I know that it explored a whole other separate theme, but I think Encanto did a much better job at demonstrating how one person’s stubbornness can unintentionally trickle down the family tree to create even more problems for the people they love. And I gotta say Mirabel has to be one of my favorite Disney protagonists ever. She is such a delight from beginning to end, “Waiting on a Miracle” is my favorite song, and I cried like a bitch when Antonio held out his hand toward her at his ceremony and then he returned the favor at the end when they gave her the doorknob.

I think it's cause in Coco we don't see too much of the living family. And the only ones who had any interpersonal drama were a separated couple whose issues came from an outside force. The only person that was negatively affected by any of it besides those two was the main character. If he didn't like music then there would be no story. There's the scene with him and the grandma where she tries to get him to stay by singing to him, but she doesn't really apologize or anything until they're given someone else to blame instead of the grandpa and music. In encanto the issue is self inflicted and affecting the whole family so they have to talk to each other to actually get anywhere. Which means that the characters need to be stronger and they feel more like a real family for it. I like both movies but I can agree that Encanto handled family drama better.

@@untitled-gv3qp I agree. I love both, but I do think Encanto did generational trauma a bit better, and a bit more realistically, For all the points you said. I think we got more time with the living family, and some more of how the music being affected the multi generations, it would've been better. However, I do really appreciate the message of learning about your family history, and, to the best of your ability, learning the truth. A lot of times it can help healing. I think encounter did generational trauma better, because of the said trauma being a more realistic source, but I also appreciate that Coco, because the family completely ignored trying to find out anything about the truth, regardless of where they got their information, affected the family. They didn't even bother looking to find a death certificate, or anything about Héctor. They just went with what Imelda sad, and she was very angry at the time. I know from personal experience, although not to the same effect as in Coco, that searching your family history, although a roller coaster, can clarify some things, and help make the future a bit better. At the very least, it tells you what to look out for, because history can repeat itself if you do nothing.

Even though Alma reminds me a lot of one of my own emotional abusers (even sharing her name, yikes.) I am so glad she did not get... "punished" for anything. So many audience members act like Alma Madrigal got "off the hook," and fail to realize that she was literally TRAUMATIZED. In the end, everything was okay - the family got through it - it's a wonderful thing to see! The family still loves Alma despite everything; and even if she is the villain in some cases... that doesn't suddenly erase the fact that she is a VICTIM. This movie is so good and dear to my heart; it's a character driven masterpiece with self contained interpersonal issues - and a moral that a lot of people needed to see.

I feel people hate the happy ending because if they're basing it off their own traumatic experiences, which likely didn't resolve, so they feel it's not portraying a realistic outcome. I feel it does though. It shows that families can mend if they catch the issue in time and the mistreatment isnt irreparable. People calling Alma's treatment abuse puts a certain finality to it, so I'm unsure if I'd consider it full on abuse. This familys issues haven't crossed such a line and people need to see that happiness and mending isn't impossible. It doesn't undermine those families that didn't get their happy ending, but that doesn't mean other families are doomed to the same fate.

One thing I've seen that annoyed me when people are talking about Alma as the "villain", when asked about it they say "trauma isn't an excuse for abuse" and while that statement is correct in a vacuum, they seem to stumble on the fact that she isn't abusive and that trauma is very much a reason for certain toxic behaviours (ie unattainably high expectations of others and keeping extremely guarded around everyone) and that the second Alma is told about it she almost immediately realises its true and works to apologize to not only Mirabel but Bruno too the first chance she got and did not go into denial or try and get defensive or gaslight Mirabel. She's not abusive, she's human one that went through an unimaginable trauma and wound up mentally/emotionally scarred while having to essentially look after 10's if not hundreds of people, not just her 3 newborns. And what annoys me is that they see this, call her the villain and have the nerve to compare her to say the diamonds as representatives for "dysfunctional/ abusive family members".

I am the eldest daughter of Mexican immigrants and on my first viewing of Encanto I cried at Surface Pressure and What Else Can I Do because I relate to these characters, the pressure of having to be the perfect daughter, going to college, getting a good job, and supporting my little brother through his college years when its his turn and parents when they are older and unable to work. Of course this is pressure I put on myself because I love my family so much that I want to support them even though my brother begs me not to (he is my Mirabel) and I know my parents love me as I am and support me in my decisions. I was so focused on Luisa and Isabella that I forgot about Alma, so on my third viewing with my mother (the second was on Christmas eve with small children so I didn't pay much attention then) that we actually talked about Alma. I payed more attention to Dos Oruguitas and cried even harder and we had a discussion. We talked about her trauma and how she didn't mean to hurt her family but now they can heal. Looking at my mother as we talked it made me understand her and my father more. That they push us because they want us to have a better life than they had when they first came to the United States.

Encanto is my favorite Disney movie right now. I wanted to explain that there is a theory that the reason Mirabel wasn’t given a gift was because she’s the new “candle bearer” and Abuela Alma’s successor essentially. I agree and I like the idea that Mirabel wasn’t given a gift to address the deep seated issues within the family but I think those two points can go together.

I thought the same, Alma does not have powers, so I guess Mirabel is her successor. And maybe that's another reason why she have difficulty with Mirabel too, a successor means she would die, it's never really uplifting to think of that ^^'

I like the way some people describe it as her being a conductor for the family. She brings out the best in everyone. She knows how to talk to everyone and how to actually help them get through their issues. She had to reach out to each of her family members suffering the worst and get them to talk about it before all her work made it impossible for Alma to keep ignoring the issue and they had the big confrontation that made Alma realize that she was putting stress on everyone. And then she knew exactly what to say to her afterwards. I know that it sounds more like she got the gift of being the family therapist but I mostly just don't wanna think that the cassita shunned her to make a point. She's one of my favorite leads and I hope they make her a Disney princess even though she doesn't quite fit the criteria they made for the requirements.

This film replicated so many family dynamics I have that upon first viewing, I didn’t even realize that Alma actually apologizes, my brain just saw her “apologizing” and then the film cuts to the flashback. I interpreted the scene as Alma giving excuses for her behavior. I left the film thinking Alma didn’t learn anything, she just pretended to sympathize and will probably just go back to her old ways. I saw the ending as the rest of the family realizing that Alma is the cause of their distress and healed together and would keep Alma in check if she starts demanding perfection again. It wasn’t until later viewings that I saw her apology as more sincere and genuine. (I will say that I wish the apology had been in front of the whole family.) I substituted Alma for a family member I have who is near identical to her but my family member never realizes the damage she is causing and whenever we confront her about she denies and uses her trauma as a crutch.

The minute Lily talked about the magic and the house, that validated me. A friend and I watched the movie and thought the house and magic were both the higher authorities but when nothing changed they pulled a 'Let's see this' moment and when nothing changed the magic just said 'F' this, I'm gone. Let me nail this home, Alma suffered a life of pain and she wanted to cope, but she gas lit and strained the family out of fear. She was rightly afraid of going back to a time in her life she felt helpless with the house trying to tell her otherwise. It was trying to comfort her at first before needing to prod her stubbornness and when Alma didn't give the house and the magic left as a result of her stubbornness. I may be structuring my words or logic wrong - apologies if so - but the magic left to give Alma the reality that her suffering from the past had long since ended and she was making her new life hard when she didn't need to. It left to give and extreme wake up call to Alma and she finally realized what she was doing before being given the comfort she needed. Few people communicate what they are feeling since modern culture thinks or believes feelings are weak, when the opposite is true, and some have a hard time opening back up so easily or readily after being scared so deep; getting validation and support to help someone cope... that is true peace/compassion. To put into perspective, this movie is... human. There's no big bad, no end-of-the-world setting, nothing. It's human, in emotions, in theme, in everything.

Mirabel is the most related character any movie for me cause of how much she acts like nothing is wrong and that everything is fine for like the first half of the movie but then when her song comes it just shows how bad it is to ignore emotional trauma. I've dealt with ADHD for my whole life so I understand being outshine and how to act like there's nothing wrong when everyone else in your family is succeeding in everything you can't do. And I understand how it feels to have pressure pushed on you to perfect, its a terrible feeling that I'm still dealing with, and just to say I'm not fine is something emotional hard for me to do.

My wife is from Panama, and she LOVES this movie. I gotta say when we explained to me what the lyrics were in dos oruguitas. That got to me. I don't have a good relationship with my grandma. She has been through some SHIT. I really connected with that, she hasn't been the best. But she tries, and she suffered through so much. I remember when we talked about her past. About the hurt and way she was used. It allowed me to forgive her. Now my grandma still hasn't healed, but this movie gave me hope that she would. When she saw it she called all of her grandchildren and apologized to us. I'm glad you loved the movie. It's so amazing that people don't just love it, but talk about how good it is! While Alma was flawed, she had growth! That's so so SO important! You hit the nail on the head when you said it's not about miss communication. It's about not communicating. I like the little things the movie does. The family doesn't have multiple generations of trauma to fix and the miracle nips the situation in the bud almost as soon as it arises with Isabela being forced to marry for the betterment of the family rather than for love (if that's what she wants to do) and Bruno running off because everyone is misinterpreting his gift. In a different story, this mess would've went on for 100 of years before anyone would've caught on that something was wrong.

Another thing I love about this movie is the association with Mirabel and butterflies. Butterflies are a symbol of change, and Mirabel incorporates that to the fullest, from having her be the only one without a gift to her being the one to push her family members into a healthier mindset. The golden butterfly at 16:43 is particularly touching, as it's as golden as the Madrigal house magic.

I just want to say that I'm so glad you have an understanding view of abuela as a character. I see a lot of people bashing her without even trying to consider where she comes from and all her trauma that she literally didn't have any time to process. She lost her home, her husband, was forced to take on the leadership role for an entire group, all while raising 3 newborns. While I don't condone her behavior you can see that she thought she was doing the right thing until ultimately she came to realize that it was her own methods that were harming the family she desperately tried to keep afloat. In the end she breaks down and comes to terms with her trauma, even returning to the place where she lost the love of her life, and actually wholeheartedly apologized and TOOK OWNERSHIP! That is such a big step. Wow, I have never seen another character do that... like ever. Apologies for any grammatical errors, English us not my first language

I bawled at the ending when Alma admits what she did was wrong, all I was thinking was, “I wish my mom had done that.” Amazing film that simultaneously is candid and real about family struggles while also giving a happy ending to make me feel hopeful about my own family. Also super underrated is Isabella and Mirabel’s relationship - my older sister is extremely successful, valedictorian, high up in corporate America, you name it; I had to drop out of school from mental health issues & a need to transition and in general am the black sheep of my family. The pressure of “well, your sister did it, why can’t you?” Was immense. The way Mirabel realizes that just because Isabella is “thriving” in the toxic environment but also is still suffering under that toxicity hit me like a truck. When I first moved out I had my only candid conversation about our family ever with my sister, and it hit me just as hard then that her overachieving was just her way of dealing with the same trauma. I cried during Isabella’s song too.

1. I didn't realize Abuela's contribution to the opening song mirrored Dos Oruguitas and I've watched this movie four times since it dropped on Disney+. The only logical thing I can do is frown at the screen in Sad. 2. I've been following your stuff for a while now, and because of your critiques I've been putting a lot of thought into the media I consume, as well. Once you pointed it out, I couldn't easily overlook how unhealthy a lot of messaging is around how to deal with harmful family members. I was so happy that Abuela's trauma wasn't bastardized into "Now that you know what I've been through, you should accept my horrible treatment of you". She opened up to Mirabel, apologized for the way she treated her, and then they, in equal measure, go on to lead the family into building a truly strong, healthy home. Not only are they saying "We can make this better together", which is already beautiful because there is no longer one person expected to do all the work, but they immediately start putting that into practice. 3. I feel like Mirabel has a similar energy to Cinderella, in that they wake up every day and try to make the best out of a painful situation. They are both such kind souls, and they deserve their happy endings. 4. Mirabel is the best hype-man and I love that for her. 5. I'm not surprised but I am disappointed at how many people hated Abuela after the end of the film. Apologies are hard, especially when they make you (the royal, nonspecific you) re-examine how you behaved for roughly 50 years. She also deserves a happy ending.

You know. The message of this movie about unhealthy bottling of emotions being thing passed down by Alma didn't register to me until you said it. Her expectations of herself to get over Pedro and care for the village became an expectation for everyone to get over whatever their worries were. You can see this most in Isabella, who is incredibly unhappy and you can see the forced smile on her face when Alma talks to her about marrying Mariano. She's desperately unhappy but Alma has vicariously decided to live through her "golden grandchild" and talk about the wonders of marriage and propagating the family. Isa's hatred of Mirabel directly comes from Alma putting the most expectations on Isa. She resents mirabel for not having as many expectations put on her, and that resentment makes it harder for her to be the perfect beautiful flower child which turns into a negative feedback loop. Isa's emotions coming out to Mirabel, finally being honest is so powerful, and then she immediately shuts back down when Alma comes in yelling. You can see the sadness and fear in her eyes, because she already disappointed Alma and is terrified of what that means, so goes straight for shutting up and trying to get away. Isabella coming into her own and realizing that expressing herself is healthy is one of my favorite moments of the movie, as it shows how much healthier it is to be honest and communicate your wants, as well as the joy she feels for Mirabel supporting her. I hated Isa the first time through, but her being the most obvious fallout of Alma's trauma actually works really well, as her letting loose to Mirabel is what causes the final confrontation where Alma loses it. Not to mention being forced into marriage is uh. Not exactly something she should have been expected to take well in hindsight.

Thinking about it now it makes sense that Mirabel saw the cracks after the song where she admits she’s not fine but they disappear when she goes to show the others b/c nobody else has admitted to the pressure that was bothering them. It shows at the end to when Mirabel reveals to Alma and the surrounding family that was unintentional as it was Alma was the root of the problem b/c she passed down her pressure of not losing her home or her family again onto the other members to be perfect in her desperation to keep the miracle and the house alive.

I'm a child of immigrants and survivors of famine, war, and the gulag. Its only really been the last few years where some of that trauma has started being unpacked. My aunt is the only adult before my generation that I know has been to therapy. She openly talks about her abusive childhood and has convinced my dad to seek therapy. He hasn't yet, but I think the USian openness about mental health has made it OK to acknowledge not being okay vs the "the only time we acknowledge mental health is when a friend dies from it." And I see some improvement from that. Its slow, hard, painful work though. The timing of when to talk about feelings is difficult. My spouse has been helping me, but very often all I want to do is smile and hide. Tbh I kindof hate the way trauma has shaped my personality from who I was before. And it feels pathetic some times vs what the old generations went through. you know like different scales. But trauma is trauma and there isn't some "minimum pain" needed for trauma. Its a combination of scale and time like any other injury. And I think that's important to acknowledge. Anyway I finally watched this movie and I didn't cry but I do have FEELINGS.

The thing that gets me about the movie is that it seems to have a greater focus on Mirabelle coming to understand her family than it does her family coming to understand her, and I think that's a missed opportunity. Because it's nice to see that Mirabelle comes to understand that the others are under immense pressure from their responsibilities, but I do think it could've been better served by having the family fully realize what it's like to live your life as "The Disappointment TM".

To add to this, I think Camilo’s power stems from him feeling the need to “shift personalities” by ACTUALLY shapeshifting into different people. I think it comes from the stories of people who grew up in abusive family dynamics who had to ‘shapeshift’ themselves at a moment’s notice to either keep the peace, or (in worse case scenarios) survive under the same roof until they were finally able to leave those situations once they were old enough. And because of Abuela’s expectations for everything and everyone to be both perfect and compliant, Pepa seemed to be barely holding on emotionally and her power would often cause unintentional ‘outbursts’ that effected those around her. I can see Camilo ( whether figuratively or literally ) often using his power to de-escalate the situation and help his mom with whatever emotional episode she was going thru.

I honestly think its pretty telling about the dynamics of my family based on reactions to this movie. I watched this film with my mother, and while I started to absolutely cry my eyes out during Dos Oruguitas from not just what was happening on screen but from everything that resonated with me, my mom ultimately shrugged the movie off as "lacking" for a reason that I still don't really know. Even with my face being stained with tears, she didn't say anything and just moved on. Meanwhile, I went up to my room and cried for 45 more minutes when I thought about what aspects of my family are maybe still salvageable and which ones I know are broken because my parents treat anything I say that doesn't 100% agree with them as either "uneducated" or "disrespectful". The moment I graduate college, I'm getting the hell out and living my own life. I want to build a family with a stronger foundation, and that won't have anything to do with those related to me by blood if they continue acting like I'm meant to be their subservient rather than an actual person.

I’ll say this - for the amount of analysis I’ve seen on this movie I have yet to see someone treat the house’s gift giving as it’s way of resolving the trauma in Alma’s life - first giving her the exact gifts needed to rebuild, then giving her gifts that will direct her focus towards issues in the house (Delores, Camillo and Antonio’s gifts almost are critiques of Alma grown from a direct result of her treatment of Pepa, and Mirabel’s lack of a gift to keep her from being used like Julieta and her kids). I like this.

The scene where she finally snaps and blames Mirabel for the cracks and Bruno leaving was very similar to the times my father and stepmother would accuse 14-year-old me of causing all of their marital problems. Seeing Mirabel eagerly explain how she’s trying to help, only for her grandmother to shout her down and blame her for something she had no say in hit really close to home for me. Thanks in part to your video, I’ve come around to Alma, but that scene is still a massive gut punch.

This video was an eye-opener for me. Something I figured out about my mom is that she probably has conflict avoidance, and that seeped into her parenting. As such, when there was a conflict between my sister and me, she was try to find the fastest way to stop it that made it easier on her, no matter the long-term consequences. For example, if my sister and I were fighting over who can watch TV, Mom would just come in, turn the TV off, and walk away. It didn't matter why we were arguing, only that we were arguing. That led to my sister (who is a whole other issue entirely, she's the textbook definition of a toxic sibling to this day, even though we're both adults now) purposely bothering me while I was watching TV and minding my own business, knowing my mom would come in to turn the TV off. I don't have a good relationship with my sister and have pretty much disowned her at this point. My mom says she's heartbroken about it, but I don't care. She is so bent on me just keeping quiet and "getting along" with my sister without complaint. It doesn't matter if my sister keeps hurting me, has various underlying issues since she was a kid, and won't get any help over it because she thinks nothing is wrong with her. It doesn't matter if I have to keep suffering, just get along with her so Mom doesn't feel so uncomfortable. I'm sure this has to do with generational trauma (I don't want to unpack that). Regardless, neither won't listen to me and, for the sake of my mental health, I think I'll have to just keep my distance from them for now. Also, screw anyone who says that “pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.” Anyone who says that either hasn't gone through trauma or is going through some kind of generational trauma that they don't know, understand, or have swept under the rug.

I feel safe posting this here but the family mentality of "everyone just get along, don't discuss issues" is very much the hallmark of my family. It's not to upset my father who views himself as the "core of the family", silencing me not to cause a fuss around abusers, predators, conspiracy mongers etc. Basically my father values having a family over having a good family. I know his parents didn't give him the best life and he's had a rough one himself...but he's not helping himself or anyone. My father has deep-seated issues of anxiety, anger and attachment issues but doesn't want to get better. However, his abusiveness has resulted in my mental health diagnosis-to where my doctor says I first displayed these problems since 2015...because I sent a heartfelt letter to my father in honesty...and he crumpled it in anger. Learning to break the cycle of abusive parents is crucial for ourselves, those around us and future generations.

There are some things that I love in this Movie, 1) That once Mirabel realize that everyone who is under so much pressure was because of Alma and how it won't be good enough for her, Mirabel doesn't back down and confronts Alma face to face, a way to say I'm not going to let you live in denial, we have a big problem and we need to fix, which I'm glad for as it tells audience to talk about a problem they may have in their relations and to address it in order to fix the problem, Communicate is key for life, people. 2) I love that Alma has to lose something important to her (Casita) to finally get her to realize her unhealthy coping mechanisms are not only hurt her but her whole family as well. And realizing that, she immediately explains why and apologize without any excuses or in a flimsy way, you can tell she really just wanted to protect her family and wanted the best for them. 3)I love Mirabel and Antonio close-like sibling relationship, for the time we see them on screen together, it's just really nice and cute, like Antonio getting Mirabel to hold his hand when getting a gift or when Antonio bring them to his room for Bruno to do his prophecy. It's just really sweet and adorable as you can tell they care for each other very much.

Thinking of Mirabel as the black sheep. I really relate to family members looking at you as if everything you are is wrong and you cause all the problems. Even if everyone else fills the niche that that matriarch needs, it's still never enough. Why aren't you exactly how you should've been? Not yourself, never yourself.

My one complaint is that the payoff at the end was all very short. So if we look from the scene at the river to the end of the film Abuela has a few lines apologizing in song, hugging Bruno, and that's about it. I kinda wish there was a bit more of her apologizing to her family or something of a moment of better showing her walls being down around her grandchildren. I love this movie so much, but to me it needed a few more minutes of run time to show more of Abuela walking out of that trauma comfort zone. The elements are there just not given enough time to really shine

For me, Encanto's allegory of the house has another message: sometimes structures weren't made to fit you - literally, figuratively, socially, politically. And no matter what anyone says, that's not your fault. You are not the problem, the people who made and control that structure have not made it fit for purpose. Mirabel didn't have her own place in Casita Madrigal. It literally didn't make room for her, and when it didn't, no one in the family stepped up to fix that - even though adding another room manually would have been easy; we see them helping to construct other structures. That Mirabel didn't fit was never her fault; the others in her family evidently considered the flawed structure acceptable enough not to work to change it for her. And so under the weight of a weak support system carrying loads it wasn't built for, it collapsed. Because that's what inadequately supported structures do.

Honestly I love this film. Partly because I've had a difficult relationship with matriarch of my family but mostly because it doesnt try to paint suffering as something it isn't. I am so fed up of people telling trauma victims that they are "so brave" for surviving what they have been through but to me atleast bravery always has this strange connotation that they had any choice in the matter. Same connotation as "I couldn't go through what you went through" as if anyone had a say in the matter as if anyone wanted to go through suffering. But the fact that Encanto acknowledges the pain Alma has been through but also acknowledges the problems she is causing for others is amazing. The fact that she isn't shamed for being a trauma survivor but also isn't rewarded by the story for merely going through it. Suffering and trauma causes long standing issues and it takes acknowledging that and having the right people around you to actually support you rather then just say "how brave" to over come it. Also thank god it did have an uplifting ending. Encanto is better for its hopeful optimistic ending because it shows the potential for change and doesn't shame Alma.

I kinda felt bad at first when I felt some sympathy for Alma, even with everyone swearing up and down that she's terrible and the true "villain". I sat there and went "I get where you're coming from. She's not handling things well at all. But, I also wanna give her the benefit of the doubt, or play devils advocate. Cuz while yes, she does some pretty crappy stuff, but you also gotta kinda cut her some slack cuz of what she went through. Some people make it sound like she should be thrown in the deepest pit in hell, when actually what she needs if a freaking therapist

One of my favorite moments is when she talks to her flower sister (forgor the name) and she straight up tells her that her not having powers doesnt mean she is the only one under stress, something that i think was a big part of her understanding the true reason of the “What is that? I love encanto and I could talk about it all day. I will say I know ppl think the ppl of the family should have stayed gift less but people fail to realize the powers were never the problem and the ppl of the family loved their gifts but hated the pressure and expectations that came with them. Isabela likes plants but she dosent like being perfect, Luisa likes to be strong but not all the time, pepa likes to express herself but not keeping it all bottled down, Camilo likes making ppl happy but not when it comes at their expense, and Dolores likes to hear everything but not having to tell everthing, and even Bruno may have liked being able To see the Future until everyone turned against him. Antonio is the only one that didn’t have to deal with this duality because he had mirabel to support him and encourage his love for animals.

I want to say i feel bad about skipping this movie because i fell into that same trap of thinking alma was a villian who was going to get a "rushed redemption" or a "sorry i abused you but we are Family" excuse but after seeing that she realized she was the problem and the look of dread and guilt on her face when she realized it......it hit hard as im struggling with my own family and unfortunately i dont think i can recover what i lost with them My mother is 3 states away and im living my life the happiest (as much as i can be after losing my boyfriend to covid) life i have had in a long time its a struggle but im putting in my best effort to stay afloat and my phonecalls with my mom have (at least i think) gotten better as shes not pushing me near as hard cus shes thousands of miles away A part that stands out is when alma is yelling at merabels father for not saying anything about the vision when.....Hes her FATHER!!! Its his litteral job to protect "His family" from negativity EVEN if that means Alma herself and by her saying "we cant lose our home" shes already disowned merabel putting a House and magic powers above her GRANDCHILD!!!
