I never realized that Ruby and Sapphire never say to each other “I love you”, like I don’t know why that point of all others really got to me, but the fact that they can’t even say that to each other, even after all of the allegory hidden shit that happens, is so awful

Honestly, Lily's videos are incredibly helpful to me. Sometimes you need to have somebody smack you on the head with a newspaper repeatedly, telling you that you're wrong and why you're wrong. So many glass over water episodes have gotten me to sit down, think, and realise that "wow, I'm kind of a piece of shit, I should stop that." I've changed opinions I've held my whole-ass life cause her arguments are just fucking solid. Keep up the good work, we need more people to actually have the balls to tell you that you're wrong and not being all "But that's just my opinion!" about it. The episodes about story writing are especially helpful to me as a writer. Like I thought I was doing fine, that I was a decent writer with decent plotlines and a decent cast, but yeah nope I was wrong lol. It was a bit hard to admit it to myself, but honestly I'm way better for it, so thank you Lily for telling me I'm wrong, I needed that.

In Steven Universe when Ruby said "I want to be me, but with you, from now on being Garnet will be our choice" and they decided on a wedding, I literally thought that meant Ruby and Sapphire were going to be separate characters from then on, but in a lesbian marriage., only turning into Garnet when they chose to. But nope, the wedding was just to commemorate their 'fusion' something we've seen other gems who aren't in relationships do plenty of times over. Too vague, just let them be wives!

Yeah, when I heard that, my guess was that, because they first fused on accident, purely out of a desire to not see one perish, they felt like they always had to stay fused for both of their survival. It seemed to implicate that they had never been unfused after that point until jailbreak, and when re-united they immediately fused back in order to protect everyone. I can't even remember now the reason why they were unfused after one of them had gotten angry after the jailbreak episode, the one where ruby, steven, and Greg went on a vacation. In that case I would think it made sense, but yeah I think it might have been a stronger choice to only have them fuse when they needed to fight, though they seemed to be the only gems, who thoroughly enjoyed being fused, and being one, hence her pep talk she gave Stevonnie.

I really appreciate you talking about non binary representation and the fact we shouldn't settle for the very little we've been given. When Steven Universe confirmed that all of Steven's fusions were non binary, I was that person jumping up and down saying "This is the best show! They're so progressive!". Oof. Thank you for helping me realize that I shouldn't praise that sort of thing. It hurts that I was that excited for such a tiny bit of what I wanted. Non binary characters should be recognized in show as such, and should be respected as characters, before you label it as "progressive".

this was actually something i’d been thinking about as of lately. so rarely do we see lgbt characters say they love their boy/girlfriends. i really hadn’t noticed it until i saw a thread about the show sarazanmai which has an arc about a gay couple where the major theme is this idea that so often gay couples in animation never can say they love each other or that they’re dating. seeing it called out ESPECIALLY in an anime was surprising, and i hope that going forward we start to see more people following in it and the loud house’s footsteps because it isn’t hard

Aro/Ace here, and thanks so much. it means a lot to have somebody standing up for us, since often when I bring up the issue of very little representation I get told "You already have a lot, why do you need more" I want representation that isn't afraid to have a character arc, representation that has feelings of platonic love, representation that actually uses the word aromatic or asexual either within the media, or said by the creator (bare minimum) and acts like it. I suppose if you want to see people like you in the media you need to put them there.

I'm glad you said this. I remember when I heard Voltron pulled this and I was genuinely angry because of course, it's one of the main characters' ex-boyfriend who gets killed off without us even getting to know him! I remember someone actually trying to justify it by saying that their relationship didn't matter but I responded by asking why they even bothered to bring him in if they were just going to kill him, it seemed spiteful. He responded to that by saying that's just how it is and that he didn't care and that's when I as well as family members who knew this was an important and very touchy subject for me told him to shut up, because he had nothing important to say if he admitted he didn't care. That's what I've mostly encountered with LGBTQIA+ topics, people rant to me about their very thinly veiled prejudices or I'm talking to a wall of indifference.

I'm Catholic for God's sake (literally) and I do not understand why terms like boyfriend, girlfriend, husband and wife are so freaking difficult for some people to say or write out when it comes to gay characters. I wrote a lesbian OC for a fanfiction and had zero problem typing out the word "wife" and "married" when the topic of her spouse came up. It's not that hard, people! Terms like wife, spouse, married, etcetera do not have to be, nor should they be actively avoided just because the couple in question isn't a pair of cis-gendered heteros.

From the same show, might I add, that decided to retcon a blatantly straight, and a probably straight pair of characters, into full-blown lesbians because some unhinged fans on tumblr made threats to hurt themselves or harass RT if it didn't happen... So RT Caved-In for the "representaiton" brownie points... It's good to know they've tried better with LGBT representation going forwards though, shame I'm not interested in the show much anymore after they killed 2 of the best characters in season 3 and then proceeded to tell Ruby "You're not special because of all the hard work and your natural talents that you've shown. You're actually special because you were born with magic god-powers!" which distinctly reminds me of Steven being Pink Diamond too... It's like they wanted to make them like Aang but totally forgot that Aang's growth works in tandem with him through the series and wasn't a last-second plot twist that undermines his own growth.

It's fine i guess but as ace person it's not 100% accurate, asexual doesn't mean we hate sex and we're avoiding having it like we're phobic, this part with building sex machine to avoid any intimate contact by Todd was so... wrong same as final conclusion that we should date only other ace people because straights and gays are "too horny" for us. Asexual people do have sex and we can even enjoy it because we still have same human bodies that can be stimulated, we just don't feel need to have it but like i like to explain it: you can drink water without being thirsty and find it refreshing and same goes with sex.

One "comeback" I hear whenever I criticise bad lgbt romance is "The romance isn't the focus!" Which a) doesn't actually mean anything, like what does that statement disprove? b) Just because it's not the focus doesn't mean it's free to be criticised and c) So many shows have romance as something on the side and nail it, Chandler and Monica are a particularly good example of being a great romance on a show that comedy is the forefront.

YAS QUEEN BRING IN THAT TEA. SIP IT FOR THE PRIDE! No, but really. I knew I liked the loud house for a reason. Ever since I found out clyde had two dads and they aren't hated in the community for it. I was hooked! It was already a good show. Fun characters, good morals. Good animation, etc. But I just love how its ACTUALLY putting the fucking effort in and even now making a major MAIN CHARACTER a bisexual?? 10/10 great job loud house. And you too Lily! Great job calling out all of those homophobic assholes scared of committing to being a full homophobe because of the obvious loss of money. You deserve all the love, queen!

One of the better things I’ve seen was in Schitts creek, the wine scene between Stevie and David. He just explains, “I like the wine, not the label”. It’s not over done, they don’t brush over it either and give him plenty of different gendered love interests in the show. I’ve always liked it

This is something that Disney is guilty of a lot too. In the movie Ownwards, they constantly preached about having their first LGBT+ character when in the actual movie, she only made a few brief cameos. Same thing the live-action Beauty and The Beast movie. They constantly talked about how Lafoo (Gaston’s goofy sidekick) was gay but they never really explored that in the movie and just used it as a joke or to make him into another cliche gay guy stereotype. And when they showed him dancing with another man in one scene, it only lasted for four or five seconds! Seriously?! A lot of these big companies are all just talk and no action. They treat LGBT+ characters like a new cool toy to show off instead of as an actual character or person.

Anyone else replayed that "give me money" intro at least 3 times? Edit: alsow, "christians" who use "iTs aGaIntS tHe wIIl oF gOd" as an excuse for homophobia are moronic hypocrits, if same-sex relationships realy is againts "the will of god" then this means that god wants humans to procriate and survive, yet several churches despise and condem intercourse again because of "the will of god" and "purity" só are we making sense here? I know i'm just a dumb kid but i got more than 4 braincells and this dosen't make sense to me

"You're implying that we are not allowed to be happy" This literally happened once in the Simpsons, ala The Burns Cage. The entire plot is based on how Smithers will always be sad as long as he's hung up on Burns, how he "comes out" (which he doesn't, by the way, the "coming out" scene was literally just: "You really like me, don't you?" "Maybe, a little bit, still") and it's praized as an example as something done right. The episode itself only says the word "gay" once.

I sat down to this video full of stress, ready to be judged as homophobic, insensitive straight man, despite trying my best with portraying homosexual men and women in my book... "You shall be judged by The Council of Gay..." *brings out the checklist* "No cloak and dagger hiding, openly in relationships, check. People die... after years of happy marriage, so it's a check... check, check... hmm, pretty good! Check! "The Council of Gay declares you an ally!" But without sill jokes now, I guess treating other human beings like, y'know... human beings, is all it takes to write a good character.

Currently I'm watching an animated series on KZbin and what brought me immeasurable joy is that they actually have a nonbinary character! Like, they said "I'm nonbinary" and they're refered to as they/them! It brings me so much joy when a character is canonically called nonbinary, and not just confirmed on Twitter. Unfortunately, to find this on TV would be a Sisyphean task.

Your part on ace and enby people got me thinking. I’m writing a story where one of the female characters is a closeted ace aro, but one of the straight males has a crush on her, and I’m just struggling to find a way for her to come out without it being a “oh she just doesn’t like him” type thing when in reality her identification of asexuality for her personally is not having any kind of attraction to anyone whatsoever (whether it be romantic, sexual, aesthetic, etc).

I just call everyone that, but if it is offensive please let me know so that I don't do it again. I've never had anyone tell me it was offensive until my friend of 7 years told me she thought it was offensive that I called her "dude" so let me know.

The only way I could see the "othering" stuff work is if the story actually unpacks that shit. However, that requires rebuilding the monsters from the ground up (like making them not monstrous and only assumed to be by the fearful), which most people don't do. And if they're not the only LGBT characters. And if being LGBT and being those monster/alien/etc. groups are considered separate demographics entirely and treated as such by the story.

I feel the jab at the Dragon Prince for killing off two lesbians was a bit unfair considering they do have two lesbians later who do get a happy ending(as of season three). I am not saying the writing staff is without sin, I simply like the show and feel that jab towards it is a bit unwarranted.

JustaRandom Fanner they don’t say that the two are actually in a relationship though. Neither Amaya or Janai refer to each other as ‘girlfriend’ and most of their dialogue can be written off as ‘just friends’. Hopefully with the later seasons they will do these things but as of right now their ‘relationship’ is very strange, especially considering that Amaya was essentially given to Janai as a pet.

@@faithowen4222 Ok fair point but, Runaan and Ethari. Yes, Runaan is trapped in a coin but he is clearly shown not to be dead and there is PLENTY of foreshadowing he is going to come back through the flower not being sunk. Also they hold hands which so fair has been a sign of a relationship in the show.
@faithowen4222

JustaRandom Fanner holding hands is a sign of a relationship? That’s still pretty vague and again can be written off a really good friends. And Ruunaan and Ethari only had one scene together, a good scene but still, one. As it currently stands, the show has not been very good with handling their gay relationships, and I really hope they can get their act together and start to handle these relationships better. Especially considering such a weak start with introducing a lesbian couple, who do not have names, and are killed the very episode they are introduced. I really, really hope that they can get themselves together and handle these relationships with the care and attention they deserve.
