GA boy here, yea we been taught especially in Appalachia not to whistle or sing when you walking in the woods or down a holler at night by yourselves. A few years back I had been walking in the WMA where I had some trail cameras through the thicket. I had planned to go cut a new hunting trail though the thicket. My house sits on top of the mountain and backs up to the WMA. I had gone down into the woods with a headlamp, a radio, and an old .22 single shot rifle. I was walking down about 3 miles from home determined to find an old logging road that led into town through an old holler. I had gone down and that winter sunlight had fallen behind the mountains faster than I planned. We always been taught that when the sun goes down, if your alone, go home. I didn’t. I was walking and I found the old logging road and it was dead quiet, and the trees blocked out the dusk that fell. I began walking. When I found the larger logging road that passed an old range I shot at before. It was there and then that my radio I had been listening to Earl Scruggs on went static. I wasn’t scared but frustrated. Could you not, 5 seconds later, my lantern went out. There I was, nothing but a static radio, parents didn’t know where I was, and no light. I freaked out and chambered a round and turned on my little headlamp. On that dark logging road I passed the range and It was there that I had a horrible feeling. It wasn’t the normal feeling where you feel paranoid of something, I honestly thought there was something on this road with me. I would walk that road all that way through that holler in pitch black with my head lamp beaming no more than 5 feet I saw. I turned often behind me to check that no one been watching me. Occasionally I spent a round I fired into the darkness behind me to make sure. Nothing. I made it back to town and the neighbor had asked me where I was, I told him what I felt on that lone mountain road, and he goes “I felt that same way when I had to walk down that holler alone, there’s haints in those woods.” He said. That’s my experience if it’s anything.

@@shanethomas7177 Well when I was in the 4th grade we lived in Beaverton Alabama. To be more exact we lived in a community known as Lost John . (which is a story within itself) Any how one night MaMa heard a baby crying! I was in the 4th grade and the youngest was in the second grade. So she thought maybe I am hearing stuff. So when she heard it again she went to our bedrooms. Well sure enough we were all sound asleep. So she went to the door that was off of the carport! She said when she opened the door she saw the HUGE backend and LONG TAIL of a black animal (that stood between knee and waist high) snake around the corner of the house! I have never known her to lie! I also had a run in with a coyote myself in our backyard at the same house

An ancient black man named Albert Miller lived in a shack near my fathers country store and I would visit with him when he came to buy kerosene for the lanterns that lit his house. This was in the mid sixties. He claimed to have haints in his home. He told me that when he would lay in his bed in the dark of night and hear something running back and forth in the attic he would shout, “HAINT BE GONE!” If the noise quit it had been a haint. If it kept running it was just a rat. Heavy can try Albert’s method the next time around.
