This is one of my favourite orchids. It was interesting to see you demonstrating how the whitish coating repels water. Mine has quite a lot of this coating. My guess is that it also works as a sunscreen, because my vitellina has never got sunburnt even though I give it direct sunlight during the summer. I had read about this advice in a magazine from the Finnish orchid society. There they said this orchid can take even much more light than cattleyas. But some other sources say intermediate light. One thing to consider is that here in the north of Europe the sun is lower in the sky than in center Europe, so as the sun rays come diagonally, their strength is not the same than in the Mediterranean. One is less likely to get sunburnt in the summer in Finland than somewhere closer to the equator (but a cattleya could get sunburn in direct sunlight here anyway). This orchid is very hardy and easy to grow. I have heard of people growing it in so many different ways and media, with great success. The only thing I heard that could quickly kill it is soggy sphagnum. 😊 Have a great week!

I was born in Mexico and I must say that our country has a wide range of climate across it's territory, not only warm weather. And the regions where this orchid is naturally found are conifer forests of high altitude where temperatures might as well be just a few degrees above freezing point during the winter months but quite warm during the summer, so this plant really experiments changes of seasons during the year.

The coating looks kinda like the coating on some succulents, and apparently on them its not only a water repellent surface, it has more functions which I list in my video about the topic, like anti climb surface etc. Maybe its the same on orchids, which would be really interesting!

Oh, si ça pousse sous lampe, j'ai peut-être de la place pour cet Encyclia. You got my hopes up saying she is compact and did well under artificial lights. If I see it in bloom, for sale at a show, I might give-in and get one. I have an Oncidium Twinkle that I never let dry-up and does great under fluorescent, so that Encyclia would fit perfectly in the same conditions.

I live in the UK and Summer here isn't very warm . I kept it outside in June with night temperature around 12 C . Then I took it back home and in a couple of days noticed her flower spike. I'm not sure if I was right, but I will do it again next Summer.

Oh...I wish I could. Hard to get orchids here in rural Canada. I rely a lot on ebay opportunities but our weather at this time year makes transport impossible and really limits choices. This one is absolutely beautiful.

what exactly is meant by evenly moist?
@crazyorchidlady76987 жыл бұрын
Julian Katekaru evenly moist meaning no layering in the media. Where maybe you have too much moisture in the bottom, and good amount of moisture in the middle and the top is very dry. This is why she uses seramis and leca because they wick so it helps to evenly spread the moisture across all the media, also they won’t decompose.

It's not a forgiving plant. Trust me. I still can't understand how you're growing it.

Thank you for your work here. I love orchids and growing for the second time, with success now! My little phaleononpsis rescue has a new green root to go with the other two it managed to hang onto. And the intergenerics are doing well with new growth after division and repotting. So...Thank you! 😘
