In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

My grandfather died from this disease. It's a horrible way to go. I hope Hiro achieves his goals before he passes.

This is so inspiring. I have POTS which is difficult to live with, and I try to stay positive because being negative doesn't make anything easier. I could sit around and do nothing but feel sorry for myself if I wanted. But I don't because it won't change a single thing. Hiro is my hero. No pun intended. I hope to live my life with as much dignity and grace as him.

sucks knowing governments would rather invest time/resources into things such as war and weaponry than curing diseases that are probably treatable but non profitable, A persons life should be all the profit one needs, the world is messed up in so many ways, cant help myself but feel sorry for the guy even though he has made a negative into a positive.

No one can blame you for that. Neither one of my parents even drinks or has, but when my friend was dealing with MS, marijuana kept him eating, walking, and feeling less pain. I hope it's legalized where you are so you can obtain the medicine you need more easily.

So is their mission for a cure AND to legalise euthanasia? What would it take to cure ALS? Stem Cells? I'm all for both. If I had a disease/condition/impairment that was terminal and i felt within myself that i was 'waiting to die' so to speak, i would rather die on my own terms and free my hospital bed/medical resources for someone who had a similar situation but chooses to live OR someone who has a treatable disease. I'm all for stem cell research too, especially for young people, who get terrible withering diseases when they have only just started their lives, plus there are so many disease out there that aren't terminal but the quality of life is almost zero - which is bullshit- we should be able to cure these people and restore the quality of life that most people have.

Lots of theories are still out...If we understand thoroughly what is happening, a cure isn't very far away... "Oxidative stress linked to free radical formation was also explored as a cause of ALS, owing to the discovery of mutations in the free radical-scavenging enzyme superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1).[25] Mitochondrial damage was implicated as a possible mechanism as well, as was autoimmunity to calcium ion channels." -Medscape

I think he was just adding some humour, tongue-in-cheek style. I think it was just his boss expressing his affection for Hiro in a cheeky way. He was basically calling Hiro a fun loving young Japanese cowboy and a genius advertising exec.
