I have been ordered back to Earth immediately to be promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral, after which my new assignment will be Chief of Operations at Starfleet Command. Admiral Nogura says that he has the utmost confidence in me with this new position, and he has assigned a Captain Willard Decker to take my place. Decker, the son of my old friend, the late Commodore Matthew Decker, will be overseeing the entire reconstruction and refit of the _Enterprise_ . Until then, I can only hope that my tenure will not last long, and I can once again sit in the captain's chair and make a real difference in this universe. This, I feel, is truly where I belong. This would have been a fitting end to the 5th season, maybe with Kirk looking on in an admiral's uniform discussing the future. Sadly, in that the "steams of time" (with quantum theory in place) if Star Trek had gone all 5 seasons they might not have been a Motion Picture series as it is today. Sometime a "death" makes an entity immortal. Part of the story of Trek is the cancellation.

@@LordTalax It had it's moments, but too much of its good hinged simply on seeing the Old Gang reassemble. The plot was weak, and the sets, for the most part, not as good, and a lot of the bad stuff in STTMP leaked over into every subsequent part of the franchise. By the time he made STTNG, Roddenberry had become somewhat embarrassed by TOS, unfortunately, and that showed.

Trek fans should be grateful that the proposed 'phase 2' sequel Roddenberry wanted to make in the 70s never got off the ground. It would have killed the franchise deader than the a red shirt fighting Kirk himself. A lot of P2 got recyled into STTMP and was the source of some of the trouble.

They indeed nearly did replace everything when they did the refit. Basically, they stripped the Enterprise down to the frame and built a new ship on the skeleton of the old. The Enterprise: NCG-1701; preparing to die and be reborn. That has been happening to ships since Roman times (and probably before) but there is always a moment of sadness as the crew realizes that the ship they served on, lived on and for some, died on; will go through a change and become a new and effectively different ship. Sadness for what is lost and hope for the new and better systems that will go into the hull. And maybe the Thanksgiving turkey won't be made of hamburger next year...
