You should take another run at it using Unreal Engine. It renders in real time just about and the control you have is amazing. Not super hard to learn either and it’s free. I think you could get pretty close to the original and tweak from there to your liking. In this particular scene in the original, it was pretty clear that the lighting on the ships didn’t match the star base environment. They kind of glowed blue.

When you see the end of the nacelles nearing the doors, I always thought it would be more suspenseful if you saw the saucer section nearing them instead. The time it takes for them to open is too slow and the angle shown, makes you think they would still hit the doors because the wide space of the nacelles. Just my opinion.

Too dark. The developers decreed that in the movies, the ships were to be the source of light as space was dark. Not only did you leave out the blinking running lights on both ships, but what light shown was too dark. The Enterprise's hull shines under a light source. As should Excelsior's. Your depiction of the Enterprise going to impulse power is too jerky in movement. The ship appears to move faster and then slows down. In the movie, Excelsior had cleared the rim of spacedock well before the Enterprise approaches us. Your placement of the Enterprise blocked out most of the Excelsior appearing in the shot. Your angle on the spacedock's space doors is way too steep. You need to up the angle a bit. Finally, I don't know why you decided to add extra damage to the Enterprise's saucer section. There should be two burn marks just behind the bridge and a bit to the left of the Impulse drive on the upper section. This is where Khan hit the Enterprise with a photon torpedo in ST:II. You added several more bits of damage and even extra on the starboard (right) side. Unless that's some kind of shadow...which shouldn't be there.

Great work. While I’m sure this took WAY more time than you’re given credit for, I will say it’s my opinion that I like the model ships better. I do have to ask: When Kirk ordered 1/4 impulse power to back out of space dock, the ship didn’t move. Also, when yellow alert was first called in space dock (and the Enterprise was passing the window), what was up with that guy looking and wondering around like he had NO clue who he was or what was happening?😂

Very well done indeed. Always a pleasure to see our Lady especially when She lifts up her petticoats and speeds away. I will always love her and to see her destroyed around Genesis gets me every time as does the scene where Kirk tells Scotty, Sulu and Chekov that they don't have to go with him and McCoy. That crew would follow him to the gates of Hell and back

...I have wondered why Sulu didn't spin the Enterprise around as they approached Space doors. ...I have a Question for all of you who have seen ST: IV more than three times...the Asian woman on the Excelsior bridge; 'Is she the same actress that appeared on the bridge of the Grissom?' ...This has bothered me for years. Thanks for your time. LLAP

Why did Excelsior slow to a stop when the engines failed? Her momentum should have kept her moving..and if ya don't believe me... ask Sir Isaac Newton.

While I love this scene , I still wish I could have read Diane Carey Novel that involved Piper and her group having to steal the Enterprise. Carey summitted the novel and had it turned down , because of this scene .

Well done ;) The FX looks pretty good. The only thing I'm always wondering about while watching this is, where's all the staff of the Starbase? Are they on lunch break or something like that? The easiest thing would be to use the tractor beam of said base to stop Kirk and crew right at the start.

Yeah, I had the same thought, but maybe Scotty snuck into the Starbase tractor-beam facility somehow. With his engineering skills, he can do just about anything.

I enjoyed it. it's nice to see fresh takes on the old ST movies. it keeps things interesting. The only thing I would really change is I would add the flashing lights on the space door and you put "NCC" on the Excelsior instead of "NX".

it is SO nice to see the nacelles approach the space-doors without the blue-screen white outline which always jarred me out of the scene. You could have just fixed that and I would have been thankful.

If Admiral Kirk answered Captain Styles' hailing and told him that he hates Captain Spock because of him being Kirk's best friend, would Styles answer that question? Even if the Excelsior did get to Genesis and had seen a Klingon Bird of Prey there, Styles would have to help Kirk defeat the Klingons there, but would he allow Kirk to get Spock off Genesis and let him be taken back to Vulcan to have his spirit in Leonard McCoy return to him by a ritual or not?

Anyone ever wonder just how a starship goes to impulse speed in reverse, given where the impulse engines are located? I doubt the maneuvering thrusters have _that_ much power.

A fun exercise. I have a couple small critiques that could help in the future. Everything is just a little too sharp. If the software you have allows area lights, try them instead of point lights. Also consider using a depth of field filter. Not everything should stay in sharp focus. Your models are good and most of the motion is good. So keep going!

The question which came into my mind is 'why would they even HAVE doors in the spacedock?' When the Enterprise was being rebuilt it was in a space cradle, and the doors don't lead to an airlock so the interior of spacedock must be as much vacuum inside as outside; so why the doors?

Some day somebody can redo this sequence with CGI that actually approaches the beauty and immersiveness of the original model work. But this CGI is not on that level. It's a start. It's not bad. It's just not close to that level.
