NASA's Environmentally Responsible Aviation program is coming to a close. New advanced leading edge wing coatings are being developed that will deter bug strikes and help maintain laminar flow over airplane wings. And, we visit the Ames Research Center to see final testing of a new BWB model in the 40x80 wind tunnel.

The future looks really bright for air and spacetravel! I'm really into science and technology when it comes to air and space. In fact that is what I'm aiming for! And thanks to you at NASA X I can get a behind the scenes look at just that explained and shown. You kind of give me a headstart in my future career!

I suspect you would not have to slow down the service cruise speeds a whole lot to achieve the results of the programs mentioned. You could more than recover the minute time lost by clearing the aircraft for landing at it's destination, electronically, before it takes off.

Advanced , all the way back to the 40's . It was called the Northrup flying wing , not new but advanced for sure . The new thing is called the blended wing .

I admire the work that is being done by NASA. Probably also working with the Europeans who had the firs winglet aircraft ! Why no mention about their contribution to a cleaner and more efficient flying environment ?

I never considered smooshed bugs could significantly affect airplane performance. I would've thought a plane would have to fly through a cloud of millions of bugs to make any real difference.

6:45 The projected (and effectively achieved) improvements were against a 1999 airplane - so how do these results compare to a 2017 airplane? I'm sure still ERA is still considerably better, but by the time the blended wing body is actually possibly in service, how much will it improve upon the then-new tube+wing aircraft?
@JFrazer4303
@JFrazer4303 6 жыл бұрын
Vastly better. Simply building Burnelli '60s blocky lifting bodies would increase range and payload x1.75+. Any improvements you can squeeze out of tube & wing planes, put a simple crude lifting surface like the Boeing 754 instead of a static-drag tube, and you gain more than we can hope to realistically hope to wring out of the ugly draggy tube & wing (ugly to the air). Just with the un-blended lifting body, L/D ratio improves while payload goes up, with same engine & fuel load and footprint. It does not require advanced technologies to achieve such improvements, just elimination of non-lifting drag, by overcoming institutional inertia and unwillingness to build them first. Boeing has said they will not build a BWB civil plane, though they don't seem to mind building it in military planes. Virtually every future military plane will, and discover efficiency advantages while dong it for stealth.

wait, so the sweeping jets can change the flow of air on command? can they be implemented onto the lifting surfaces of an aircraft to counteract the vertical movement of turbulence?

So how many of new aircraft designs are on being built by the major aircraft manufacturers?
@JFrazer4303
@JFrazer4303 7 жыл бұрын
Not yet. They all follow Boeing, and they will not ever build lifting body designs. But see the F-15 and 18 for existent lifting bodies. See the F-35 and F-22. Of course the B-2.
@ausintune9014
@ausintune9014 5 жыл бұрын
@@JFrazer4303 out of all thoses only the B-2 is a true lifting body. The F-35, F-18 and F-22 are classic tube and wing and the F-15 is a semi lifting body.

This is a great video but in the blended wing body design they should have included in their parameters from the start the quick evacuation of the passengers in an emergency. These designs have so far demonstrated catastrophic evacuation times. I'm not a party pooper. I want them to succeed but the design would progress more realistically and be more ready for production if something so basic is included in all the research and development. Otherwise, they would have to start all over gain.

Can we assume that you mean the blended wing in body design? Unless an aircraft is a rotary wing aircraft, such as a helicopter, it is by definition, a fixed wing aircraft. Ergo, all tube-and-wing designs are fixed wing aircraft.
