I'm 75 (not poor) and I removed my landline 5 years ago. I only use my cell now and I'm very computer oriented as well, using my MacBook Pro! Not everyone who is my age relies on things from years ago; some of us are actually quite informative and move with the times!

When the power goes out, an old fashioned landline still works. No power needed. Digital “landlines” only work as long as the backup battery can power the cable box. I live in NYC where power goes out. I once had no power for three weeks when Hurricane Sandy hit - but at least my home phone worked. In the apartment where I currently live, I have very poor cell reception. I’m 42, disabled, and ill - and homebound. Connectivity is crucial for me. Two years ago, I had no heat or power for 3 days, and if I hadn’t been able to call ConEd, the situation would have been worse. I don’t think copper landlines should be phased out. In fact, every home should have one for safety. Phone companies often charge people more to get connected to them as compared to VoIP connections, which seems unfair for people who need and prefer copper lines.

So is copper telephone service still available in New York City? I know Verizon is the telephone company there and they have fiver pretty much all over the place.

Yes, BUT it is possible for phone lines to get knocked out too, especially during a storm or wildfire. Also, someone could cut your phone line. We have Verizon Fixed Wireless service that has 36 hours of battery back up and we have 2 external power bank boxes with 48 hours back up on each one, that's 5 days of battery back up for stand by time (talk time is less). Whenever we do laundry in the basement, we glance at the boxes to make sure they are charged and all 5 lights are illuminated.

Landline still works in power outages (has its own voltage), is immune to Internet outages, and don't forget the thousands of businesses that still use Fax machines, people who still use DSL for Internet service, and every ISDN BRI/PRI still in existence.

People still use FAX machines? Do they also still use buggy whips? I think you'll find ISDN is largely gone, both BRI & PRI as the TDM phone network that used them is also largely gone.

Those over 65??? I'm 70 and haven't had a twisted pair phone line since 2007. While I do have a home phone, it's delivered by my cable TV company over the same cable that provides my TV and Internet services. I also have had a cell phone for 29 years. These days, telephones are such a low revenue service that it's no longer economic to provide a stand alone phone line over copper cable. As for those in rural areas, it's even more expensive to provide the service that at one time was subsidized by those living in cities.

I am 73 years old and I live in a condominium building. It has been a very difficult ordeal to change the HOA phone lines from Plain Old Telephone Service to a Spectrum Cable Service which is a voice over internet protocol system. We have to also replace the buildings Fire Alarm Communicator Panel with a new model because the old model is incompatible with this new system.

Landlines still have value. For business, areas with week cell signal or spotty cell reception on properties, emergency phone, you can conduct business on a landline while you play on your cell phone,no dropped calls like cell phones and you can get a landline for like $10 a month

I am 73 years old and I am still using a plain old telephone service in my condominium unit. However I now know that I will have to switch to what I consider to be an inferior system. I know that the Spectrum Cable Service shuts down during power outages. I intensely do not like the fact that POTS phone service is being shut down. The POTS phone system in the United States used to be the most reliable and most available system for voice communications that ever existed. It is a shame that this phone system is being shutdown.

I'm a California resident. I've never owned a cellphone and never will, mostly because of my veganism, which is lifestyle as well as dietary. I've never sent or received a text. I live alone and may need to use my landline in an emergency. If AT&T cancels landline service, I'll have to choose a different provider. I think AT&T and other phone companies should want to keep landline service for reasons given in the video and for mine. I also think public payphones should become common again.

Around here, the phone company has long moved to fibre, with nodes in the neighbourhood and copper pair from there. Many customers have fibre to their home. I get all my services from my cable TV company that likewise has fibre to the nodes and copper the rest of the way. I get 1.5 Gb down, actually limited to 1 Gb by my hardware. I can also get up to 1 Gb on my cell phone, with 5G.

An AT&T sales person said that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is phasing out all landline services in 2025. Not just for AT&T but all landline services for all companies. While I’ve had a cell phone for 20 years, which I generally use, I like having a landline for back up when the Internet/Wi-Fi is down. The copper landlines have always been very reliable when everything else is out. I currently have my computer system through CenturyLink and I also have a landline through CenturyLink that uses the copper wire system. But they’re switching over to a company called Quantum which is fiber optics. I can still have a landline, but it will go through the Internet. So if the Internet is down so is the landline. I don’t like the idea of our ability to communicate being limited. We should have more choices of communication, not fewer.

Where can you still obtain a landline for emergency usage if Wi-Fi and electricity are out. I’ve had this happen to me more than once where everything was down, but the landline still worked? I’m with century Link in Minnesota right now and they’re changing over to Quantum. I want a landline not dependent upon Internet services.

There's plenty of other phone companies willing to step in and take over landline service: Examples are Comcast, Century Link, Cox, Frontier, Community Telephone company, Satellite Country, Time Warner, to say some of many! These companies be be knocking on Californians doors to solicate selling phone service. Also there's Verizon FiOS which can be obtained by going to any Verizon phone store. Century Link and Frontier have taken over many areas that AT&T use to provide landline service and are rapidly growing!

Frontier announced that they are decommissioning copper also and I can’t even get a landline because there is no copper or even a conduit going to my street even though my residence was built in 2016. I don’t think there’s anything I can do about this. I really want a landline because I have poor cell service in my area And the Internet company. Here is Comcast, which is the only company and they go out all the time.
