This was the end of my MSF class and some dude fails the class at the last second because he drops the bike

I am an MSF RiderCoach. A dropped bike is only an automatic failure if it happens during the actual evaluation. A drop in line while riding between evaluations, while riding to staging or in this case pushing a bike off of the range is NOT part of the evaluation and can not be used to fail a rider. And I agree with many others, this RiderCoach is acting like a total jerk. Even if there was a failure in the evaluation it should not be mentioned in front of the others in the class.

I took the course in OKC @OSU this month. A girl dropped hers during the course and the range instructor said "Don't worry about it. It happens alot. It's part of learning and most of the bikes have been dropped before." She passed like the rest of us but along with her certificate, they gave her husband the ball end of the clutch lever that broke off and told him to "Drill a hole in it and make it a necklace for her." They were excellent instructors and a worthwhile course.

The mang Bingo! To counter that happening, it is taught to leave the bike in gear, and make sure that the kickstand is fully kicked forward before stepping off of that bike and of course turning that wheel to face the side of the kickstand. When I took my MSF "Returning to Riding" course, for riders who haven't ridden in a long time, it was a blizzard outside. We rode bikes that had bald tires and would barely run. I ended up on a Suzuki TU250x, and really wanted to buy one. It was a cool little bike to tool around town on, but the ones from the class were just beaters. We only had one person who fell, and he was on a Harley that they specifically told him not to bring. They weren't sure if we were going to have the class, due to the snow, but the classes are booked up so far in advance that it would be hard to reschedule everyone, so they went ahead and told everyone to leave their bikes at home. It was my first time ever riding in snow, and it was an interesting time. lol I'm thinking of becoming and MSF Instructor, I've got 3 full years of riding time in now, and they are always critically short on instructors in my county.

@jerryjones650210 жыл бұрын
Years ago when I took it, any drop at any time was a fail. Stalling was not a problem unless you were testing. During the training, a stall was fine. Something as simple as not making sure the kick stand is set, and the bike falling over would cost you the course, no matter when you did it.
@RoyalsRP6 жыл бұрын
That's real unfortunate. I just finished taking the Ohio Basic Rider Skills class, and on day 1 of the range exercises, someone totally wiped out on a turn. Luckily it wasn't counted as a fail, just had to do some paper work. It was only a fail if you dropped the bike during any of the evaluation portions (the skills test at the end) of the class. Bless up.
@SiriusXAim7 жыл бұрын
These courses looks a lot more relaxed than the ones we do in the UK. You'll be forking in a good $1000 passing a 3 module course, the CBT (MSF-esque course), then Theory test, then MOD 1 Off Road test, then Mod 2, On road test. Instructors and trainees all have to wear high viz too.
@fewheeler10 жыл бұрын
The only way to fail an MSF class is to drop a bike during your final eval of which there are 4 exercises or perform an intentional unsafe act. After you have been given the all clear to proceed to the staging area (parking) you should be free and clear. Contact MSF headquarters, but I doubt he failed due to that drop, but was more likely due to points accumalated during his final eval.those are maxed out at 21
@brycetreese672511 жыл бұрын
During my class last week the coach said "at any time during the test if you drop the bike". However...it was OK to drop the bike as long as you didn't let go of it and walk away. If the bike tipped over and you were still "in control" of the bike, then it wasn't a fail. If you let go of the bike when it falls, walk away, etc., then that is a fail.

For those of you that are planning to take the MSF basic course - Find someone to take you to a parking lot first and learn how to ride a little. My experience in the course was almost like you needed to know how to ride, before you ever got there.These are not lessons. The "coach" would not answer any questions, nor would he offer any solutions to a problem you might be having. They just give you time to "practice". But we all know what happens if you practice your mistakes, don't we?

I think the instructor's comment is a poor attempt to break tension and lighten the mood. The student probably did not extend the kickstand fully, which is a noob mistake but it could happen to anyone that is not paying attention. I think the instructor saying "there's a fail" was just pointing out the error in a lighthearted way, albeit ill-timed. The MSF course was over (or at least done for the day since everyone returns their gear at the end of the video), so I doubt the instructor failed that student for the course for that. My MSF instructor was extremely laid back, and I bet 95% of all MSF instructors are the same. You may run across a douchebag instructor once in a while, but I am pretty sure those are the exception rather than the rule. It does not benefit MSF courses to fail people for incidents like this because that would give them a reputation for being hardasses, and eventually no one would sign up for the course.
@Flamboyant86 жыл бұрын
The instructors at my MSF course were hardasses. I remember being yelled at several times. But I passed no issues. Man. I dropped the bike I was using too. Thought I had it in neutral and was trying to back it up to park. Instructor simply called everyone over, and said “ok, now we can show you all how to properly pick a bike up without throwing your back out” gave me instructions on where to position myself, and I picked the bike up. Instructor then asked if anyone else wanted to try. One lady did, and he laid the bike back down so she could try. After she lifted it, he gave it a once over, saw everything was fine but the clutch lever. Walked over to the sea can, quickly swapped the lever, and we went about our day. This guy is Jerk instructor, and most are not like this. My instructor’s let people who failed come back the next weekend just for the testing portion and retest for free. They also would give FREE 1 on 1 or even 2 instructors - 1 student lessons on a weeknight if you wanted to work on something in particular. If your instructor isn’t making you feel like you are becoming a member of a welcoming community, find a new instructor

@mwolfman3219 жыл бұрын
Now that would suck! If he dropped or downed the bike on one of the drills then okay I know it's an instant fail. However to drop it when getting off because of a "Mistake" when putting down the kickstand is crazy. That has nothing to do with "Are you capable of operating a bike in manuevering and riding at slow speeds, turning etc. That's a case of "DAM" I just dropped my bike. Generally if you take the initative to take the safety course, I'd think that drop shouldn't matter, being he gave the effort to learn the proper safety rules/riding through a course, opposed to just taking it at the DMV with no training.
@bloodpuremager9 жыл бұрын
WOLFMAN I disagree. It's a strong lesson to be learned. Yes, it seems harsh. But lets say he owns a fairly expensive motorcycle. Learning the tough lesson in a $150 course could save him 1,000's and potentially putting himself in a position where his bike becomes inoperable because of the fall. I do not agree with an A for effort approach. You can either do it, or you cant. The course is designed to save you money, scars, and grief. I fully expect and hope someone who damaged a bike in any manner should fail, not because it costs them money, but because of the lesson learned. lessons are sometimes expensive, but it's better they be expensive than REALLY expensive.
@mwolfman3219 жыл бұрын
Sean Petersen I don't agree with A for effort either.(I know I didn't clarify as what I meant) I've never got a pass for just trying rather if it's a riding/driving test or a test/demonstration at a school or work setting. I just don't see if he did all the other parts of the test with no problems(Unless he did have problems) then getting off the bike and not be familiar with that particular bike and not having the kickstand locked, shouldn't be a reason to get a complete fail. If they allowed you to use your own bike and that was the case then he should be familar with it (Generally). After all it is a bike you are riding for the first time in some cases. I mean to not ensure its going to stand on its own when getting off is a very novice move, as I was always cautious of that when I first started riding; I can't agree with be extra careful. I'd say lose some points possibly but if those negative points still allow you to get a passing score from the other parts of the test, then he shouldn't have gotten an automatic fail.(Of course this is my opinion)

WOLF You have some valid points but it's not soo much that it was the kickstand part (which is just as important as on bike riding) but from the very beginning his mind looked to be somewhere else. He didn't look focus. His whole body was loose for gods sake. Like he was made of jello. I think dropping the bike at the end of the test, should count as a fail because it shouldn't matter if you did the skills test correct, you can't just lose all other focus after it. What happens if someone was walking by and the bike dropped on that person/kid. Or what happened if somehow the bike dropped onto another bike, and created a dominio effect? I know it's a bit farfetched but in the real world, ANYTHING can happen. Hell he could have parked his bike by the sidewalk, not paying attention and it could have fallen just as a car is passing by. Not only does it suck dropping the car because of an incorrect standing but some people really can't pick the bike back up (depending on bike/person). Obviously during an accident god forbid people usually help but if you're out alone, dropping it is totally preventable and stupid if you drop your bike this way. Putting the kickstand should be embedded in your brain even before the MSF course. Some people don't even remember certain subtle things that were taught during the course they just focus only on the riding. There's more to it than that. I double and triple check my kickstand before i get off. Then gracefully dismount and make sure the bike is steady before i lose sight of it.

theguy1224 Yeah I hear Ya, I always do to and to be honest when I took my MSC, That ran through my mind is to make sure that the kickstand was in fact locked in place and I would even rock it a little just to be sure when we got off for the next tutorial. Of course that was being new to motorycycles and it's just routine now and I don't sweat it as much.

Doing my MSF BRC next weekend (Sep 2-3) in Plympton MA. Can't wait. Doing it with a buddy of mine, so should be lots of fun. I took the 1 on 1 2-hour introductory thing which I think helped a lot. The coach there was absolutely fantastic and extremely friendly and helpful. It was serious, but fun, and he helped out a lot by correcting bad habits immediately. eCourse wasn't so bad either. Ready to do this! Next, I just need to find myself an awesome bike!

I didn't know there was an introductory thing; never heard of that. So, how did your class go?
@raso_i6 ай бұрын
@@floridaredneck in FL if you take msf, theres an eCourse that takes about 5h to complete, just a lot of non skipable video and a test at the end of each chapter, than you will have 2 days with motorcycle at the range.
@floridaredneck6 ай бұрын
Yeah, I have my endorsement from earlier in the month and was just commenting that I didn’t know there was a1-2 hour introductory thing. I was also wondering how your class went. I'm a returning rider from decades ago, but never had taken a class till now. In mine, only one girl dropped her bike, but that was early on. Our instructor was sneaky and gave us our road test without telling us. When we parked, he said, “Congratulations, you all passed”. What he had done was minimized our anxiety by testing us and we didn’t know it. I’ve found people here on YT are very supportive to new and experienced riders. I also found that not to be the case on Quora and Reddit in particular. People were posting photos of their gear they got for Christmas and their bikes. So, I posted a photo of my new gear too. I was socked at the number of insults and condescending comments I got, but my jacket wasn't Dainese and my helmet wasn't Atlas. Still, I didn’t expect to get “hazed” after my MSF class. I posted, “Happy Holidays, Be Safe & Wear Your Gear” with a photo of me in my gear. One woman said, “You’re not my mother, don’t tell me what to do”. One guy said, “New rider obviously, that jacket is going to rip to shreds on your first slide”. My response was, “Yes, I am new, did people bully you when you got your fist gear too?” There were so many like it, that I deleted my photo and all of my posts under the “motorcycle” section, “un-joined” the group and changed my profile to remove anything about motorcycles. I felt I was being attacked and still can’t figure out why. I didn’t expect that. I thought I was joining a group of people who relate and are friendly with each other. I had thought as long as people are being born, that there would be new riders and the experienced ones would share their knowledge with newer ones. I thought I would make new friends and meet up for rides sometimes and participate in bike events. I had shopped for bikes for months and basically breathed bikes during that time. I got financing and picked out a bike, but having been bullied and shamed for being new, I’m losing interest. I hope that doesn’t last, but if it does, it was a great experience. The good thing is, I have a lot of new gear now, but I might not need it. I’ll have quite a bit of money going forward that I had intended on spending on a bike, so that’s a good thing. Bad thing is I’m over 60, so I knew if I did not do this now, I never will. If people are going to make me feel bad after a $10,000 investment, I should take up a new hobby. I had a completely different idea of motorcycle riders from when I used to ride 40 years ago. People weren't judgemental then. @@raso_i

That’s what it is in Minnesota also. Listen to coaches, relax, if you can ride a bicycle, you can ride a motorcycle. Listen and have fun. Another thing, eyes up and turn your head to look where you going and it will all work.

I took the course last year to sharpen my skills. I am nearly 70 and have been riding since 1962. BTW over 640,000 km without an accident. The instructor had about 4000 miles total riding experience. He didn't teach several important bits of information every rider should have and was not a good rider himself. Playing "watch me" and "follow the leader" around a parking lot course is fine for about the first hour. Nothing beats learning one on one from a buddy with good skills and no bad habits. Waste of money. IMHO
@dagaines1522 жыл бұрын
I just recently failed the riding evaluation. One piece of advice I would give is to find the friction zone and be able to absolutely control the speed of the bike BEFORE the MSF course. Be able to control speed by feathering the clutch, even if only in a straight line. Thank me later.
@tinapham2022 жыл бұрын
Most people don’t have bikes to practice the throttle control before the course and it’s almost like a crash course being only 2 days. That’s kinda a little too quick for some people to develop the dexterity. And it okay to not have it down after two days especially if you switch bikes, just maintain control of the bike. I had trouble with throttle control and stalling the bike off stops too. So I switched from a Honda cb 125cc to rebel 300 on my second day and I was able to pass. Don’t be afraid to try different bikes during the course.

I took one of these classes with a friend who never had ridden so he would have a friend to be with. I've had 13 years of riding and racing experience so I'm not really a noob on how to ride a bike. The bikes at the location I went to were in extremely poor shape. The bike I hopped on was a Yamaha dual sport like the ones in the vid. The clutch lever was all f'ed off and the shifter seemed to be bent/stripped out and wouldn't go into gear. The instructors were bitching at me and talking shot in front of the whole class how I just don't know how to properly use the clutch. (Never apologized after the bike was actually broke and they had to go park it) Then they lectured me how I'm not aloud to use 2 fingers on the clutch/brake lever and it's safer to use 4. Overall just a bunch of clowns with a fleet of beat ass bikes talking shit on younger people to make them feel superior. You would probably learn more going out to learn to ride with a friend or family member who's experienced

They are usually the most conceited, self-aggrandizing pricks on the planet.. I took my MSF at a Honda Center in Southern California and there was no such stipulation about dropping the bike. Of course not during the test, but either before or after would not matter. The guys at the Honda MSF were great and said that's what the class is for. Even if you failed, they let you come back for an extra day or two for free so you can learn and be confident and pass. Only one girl in my class failed after multiple attempts and they let her come back. I do not think this instructor failed him but if he did that sucks.

My local community college in VA does BRC and it saids on the website that if you complete the BRC that you are exempt from the riding portion and writing portion at the DMV. Does that mean after I complete it I can just go to the DMV and get my licence?
@shiftlofi9 жыл бұрын
No, I do not think that is entirely correct. You are exempt from the riding portion of he test, but you still must take the written exam for both motorcycles and cars. Although, those are fairly easy. And you should definitely take MSF. You can drop their bikes, and get comfortable and confident before getting on your first baby. I dropped mine the day I got her and I don't think that would have happened if I had taken MSF prior to sitting on that bike.

The written portion for cars is only if you have not previously obtained your drivers license before getting your endorsement (in NC).
