“This would bring an end to nearly 20 years of SNP dominance in Scotland.”
Keir Starmer will be hoping to capitalise on the SNP “chaos” and boost Labour’s standing in Scotland to win crucial seats in a general election, explains Martina Bet.

The SNP will be the largest party in Scotland and I'd be willing to put money on that. Labour would have to enter coalition with either the Lib Dems or the Tories and that would be super toxic

The question is really about Scottish representation in Westminster. If Labour end up as the party in government, then having an MP in parliament is going to have an increase in influence on Scottish affairs.

Why do they need a coalition you can rule by consensus in a bipartisan manner. The idea that you can force through policy when you represent a minority is the root of uk electoral problems

The whole point of the Scottish Parliament is to have coalitions. They never thought a party would get a majority like the SNP has had.

@@Joe-og6bryes spot on. I don’t know why Scotland has a voting regime that isn’t deemed fit for purpose in Westminster. Such a scheme was rejected in a UK referendum in 2011. The only reason clowns like Douglas Ross get a seat in Hollyrood is because of the Additional Member system.

The amount of politicking around the issue is amazing. The simple fact is that the climate change targets which have been generated by all European governments are unachievable. Everybody knows this. The Scottish government probably was a bit careless to bow to the inevitable scientific analysis and cancel the targets. I see this as honesty. Where Hamza Yousaf made a mistake was to throw the Greens out of government before they could complete the consultation of their membership. That consultation probably would have recommended that the Greens leave the coalition government. Yousaf could have accepted the Greens leaving and then have continued to cooperate with the them (and other parties) on a case by case basis. The chaos in Scotland is not greater than anywhere in the UK. The UK has been on a long and steady decline since the Tories came to power in 2010. First with unnecessary austerity, then with the Brexit cluster***. People have consistently voted for their own poverty and the demise of the UK by believing the lies of the far right media (propaganda outlets of overseas billionaires). Having a Labour or Conservative government in Scotland or in Wales would not make an iota of a difference. Westminster holds the purse strings.

Did the Scots not get fed up with labour is that not how they ended up here? Was the reason for that. The labour party didn't work for or talk for Scotland's people? Since Starmer became party leader has he made any effort to go to Scotland or spoke about issues that relate to Scotland?Nothing will change if they get to govern the country. The priority will be London just like it always has been. Was that not why the SNP was formed in the first place. Scottish party that reflected the Scottish people. The Labour party are no longer red but light blue. They will favour the wealthy just like the Tories do. Very few of the labour party know or understand the people of this country. Gone are the days when everyone in the labour shared the experience of the the people who voted for them. The voter knew the person they voted for more than likely worked in a factory or down the pit along side them or at least some where similar. Now they' re power hungry without any real plans of how to proceed.

The Scottish Government - devolved assembly - has the responsibility for Education, Health, Roads & Ferries, Housing, Judicial/Legal System etc. It also has tax raising powers and interestingly has declined the Social Security Budget. It also receives more money per head from Westminster via the Barnett Formula. Scotland’s problems are of its own making sadly. Therefore not sure why you think leaders of political parties at Westminster should visit frequently. The idea of a devolved assembly is that as it should be closer to the people it should know the needs of the people and thus respond to those needs.

@pipoo1

I think it’s yourself that’s disconnected from reality; the polls, MRPs and by elections would say there’s every likelihood of Labour beating the SNP in Scotland both in seats and vote share. Aside from anything else is the stench of hypocrisy and BS now emanating from the ranks of the SNP over changing leader and First Minster twice in barely over a year without seeking a fresh mandate from the Scottish public, something they made lots of noise over in regards to Truss and Sunak. Showing such contempt for the public is bound to end in electoral disaster.

Current polls put Labour ahead of the SNP in voting intention in Scotland, recent MRPs have the SNP down to about 18 seats. The clue as to the SNPs electoral position was setting out the “29 seat strategy” at the conference last year, by implication meaning they expected to lose 20 seats.
@pipoo1
@pipoo1 Ай бұрын
@@eckie4679I’d remind you that in the period 2007-2011 the SNP had an informal confidence and supply arrangement with the Tories. The outcome of the 2019 and 2021 election no longer reflects the political reality. Polling and by election clearly show a massive swing back to Labour has happened in Scotland and the SNPs admitted target for the General election is 29 seats, they have 48 currently. The party is basically insolvent thanks to Murrell, its membership has collapsed and the hypocrisy over its changes of leadership mid term is now deafening. Oppositions only vote to bring a Government down when they believe they can win the subsequent election.
