They were indeed. But never had nations & people lived in the situation we do now. Nations have never possessed nuclear warheads capable of wiping entire megacities off the map while simultaneously destroying the atmosphere of an entire country if not continent. The polarisation we see today is so powerful that people are willing to kill and die for their side of the coin. There is no denying that the technological and political climate of the present day has ever been equalled in the past.

@@KayAccords I'm not sure I agree. In the past they had things like the Black Death which wiped out nearly half the population of Europe. You'd walk outside and see new dead bodies daily. There was the fall of Rome, the Crusades, the spread of Islam, the Mongol Hordes, WWI and II, the Cold War. There have been many, many existential threats in the past, far worse than what we face today.

I don't know if you're speaking about Christians or just people in general, and I don't know what you believe but consider this. As a Christian, it's a misnomer that Christians have always looked for the end of the world, because the Bible says the age of mankind's dominion will end but Jesus will reign forever, in a perfect kingdom. Jews have the same view (minus Jesus being the Messiah who reigns) and I believe Muslims have a similar view, as well. I don't believe anyone sees the world as ceasing to exist, except Atheists. Now the Christian worldview is that humanity will go to war after war after war decimating the human population and if the last global war takes place we as a species will cause our own self-extermination via war. We see this in Matthew 24 in which Jesus describes the world just prior to His return. 21 For there will be greater anguish than at any time since the world began. And it will never be so great again. 22 In fact, unless that time of calamity is shortened, not a single person will survive. But it will be shortened for the sake of God’s chosen ones...29 “Immediately after the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will give no light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 30 And then at last, the sign that the Son of Man is coming will appear in the heavens, and there will be deep mourning among all the peoples of the earth. And they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. So Jesus is saying when I return it will be immediately at the end of the worst time in human history worse than WW1 or WW2 and the holocaust. 22 In fact, unless that time of calamity is shortened, not a single person will survive. That is the claim. Now the Bible has a "war" theme to it surrounding this time. Matthew 24:6-8 6 And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately. 7 Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. 8 But all this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come. Revelation 6:8 So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth. Revelation 9:16 Now the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them. 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone. 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed..." Rev 19:19 And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. Zechariah 14:3 Then the Lord will go forth And fight against those nations, As He fights in the day of battle. 4 And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, From east to west,..." Now as one respondent said never before in human history have we had the capability to wipe out all human life on earth before the atomic bomb. Yet today we do. A massive global war with nukes is a real possibility that could wipe us out. We also, see collapsing currencies and rising debt levels. Globally in 2024- and 2025 I think we will see real hardship and economic devastation as a result of all currency printing we had in 2020-2021. I think that a global economic crisis or a world war changes the world forever, so I wouldn't say end of the world but I do think it's the end of our world as we've known it. I think not only is America divided, so is the world. I think with economic hardships and internal riots and protests etc. the reality of war becomes more real. I think we will see a massive global shift in the next 12-24 months that will affect all of us greatly. I think that what the Bible calls sin, which is us creating our own morality and our own truth, will lead us far off course and towards more war and death. But my hope isn't in people, it isn't in a church, or Christians, my hope is in Jesus. That as GOD came to say we're sinful but that He loves us and sees us all as valuable to die in our place for the death we bring to our world and into other's lives. That if we trust in Him instead of ourselves to save us from death because if what He did on the cross our ledger is wiped clean. He tells us that the path we are on, that we think is wisdom in our eyes will lead to our destruction. This is what we are told the world will be like as His return nears. 2 Timothy 3: You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2 For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3 They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. 4 They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. 5 They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that! It talks about Christians too. The Church will become apostate and we see this all over. Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. 2 These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead. 3 They will say it is wrong to be married and wrong to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who know the truth. 4 Since everything God created is good, we should not reject any of it but receive it with thanks. 5 For we know it is made acceptable by the word of God and prayer. But Jesus says in John 3:16-17 16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. Romans 5:6 When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. 7 Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. 8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. 9 And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. 10 For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. 11 So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God. So you're right people constantly do claim the "end of the world is coming" but when have we actually had the ability prior to the atomic bomb and globalization of the economy to kill off everyone via war and famine like we can today?
