My suggestion is to get a dog that is from a working breed but not bred for hard work, stuff like terriers, that way it has the intelligence and desire to work with you, but if it’s from a serious working breeder they may be too energetic and driven

Currently without a dog. I've always had large breeds that can easily accompany me on hikes. This video opened my eyes to the practicality of small breeds, especially in my senior years. Thank you! 👍 I chuckled at how Baker turned to check on the cameraman a couple times when you were walking up the hill. 🐾 Tractor footage? Absolutely yes. One of my favorite KZbin channels involves heavy equipment rescues. Us gals can like it just as much as guys! 😅

I’m a small dog person for sure. Dogs are extremely adaptable, my small dog for example was raised to be a “dog”. He’ll hike, swim in lakes, chase small animals, and play hours. I know owners with big dogs who treat them like little babies and they act as such. There is nothing inherently less “dog” about a little dog.

How wonderful to find your channel Stonnie. Such a refreshing delight to see you out walking with your little dog who’s obviously having a ball in such an amazing playground. You are such a calming and caring influencer/guide and relate so naturally to your dog, no matter what size. Your farm could be forgiven for being one of ours here in New Zealand, minus the coyotes, snakes and bears! We are so fortunate when walking in nature. Your daughter out reading in her ‘side by side’ pretty much says it all about the great parenting she’s had/has. Thank you for sharing your dog knowledge in your beautiful natural environment. Baker is one lucky wee dog!

Love this post Stonie, my big dog passed away at the end of the pandemic. Due to three serious accidents back to back, a large dog is no longer an option for me. I'm also 65 yrs old. I've ALWAYS had one to thee dalmatians as an adult. I adore the breed. Now I'm recovering and I can't give dals the life they deserve. I discovered chihuahuas. I'm shocked at the discrimination that we have experience. Way, way more that me and my dals ever have. My dogs are trained, they are vocal 🎵 and they are NOT ankle biters.😂

I worked in an animal hospital for a while. Most Chihuahuas were considered piranha dogs. Not because of the breed but because of the owners. Tiny dogs are cute when they bite right?. At least that was the attitude most had. It's the owners fault. I met some that were wonderful dogs.

Best dog ever, in a lifetime of dog ownership, was a Westie. He was always ready for an adventure, great with kids, moved to Europe with us ( his own seat on a Swissair trans-Atlantic flight, thanks to a kind flight attendant who suggested a blanket on the empty seat next to me, so he could get out of his carrier), perfectly behaved in restaurants, and just fine spending time alone in our apartment while we were at work. All that would have been impossible with a large dog. Still tear up after 30+ years when I see a Westie.

You made me chuckle with the plea for tractor interest. I bet I've seen just about everything you should and shouldn't do with a smallish tractor here at our place with my husband and our tractor. You haven't lived til you get it buried in deep mud at the farm! For many years I was not a fan of small dogs. After working for a couple decades around dogs in the veterinary setting I began to have a change of heart. Most of the problem is the way they are treated/trained by the people. I've met some small dogs with real personalities. I have begun to pursue the adoption of a medium or small dog to be our adventure dog. I love big dogs but with my age, abilities, and how we travel a small companion just works better. Really enjoyed this video.

I'm in Toronto, Ontario and the number of coyotes is high, surprisingly. Along the ravines, creeks and even straying into public parks and biting people, not a lie. I suspect they are drawn to the trash left behind, lost their fear of humans or the increase in dog ownership since the pandemic started. I have 2 havanese, my go to alarm system but mostly a family pet, small house=small dog. My 12lb female was a huge joy for my late father, 94yrs old, she was like a 2yr child with him, the smile she brought to his face, the conversations he had with her, she still remembers his name.

I don't worry about coyotes getting my little Rat Terrier, because her best buddy is an Anatolian Shepherd. (The Anatolian lives in our goat pasture.) But I do know of dogs getting snatched right out of fenced yards by coyotes (mostly in semi-arid Eastern Oregon, where we lived for a while). And my step-father had a little mixed-breed dog named Taco that he took hiking with him all the time. One time, near Mt. Hood in Oregon, my step-father heard a slight sound behind him and looked around to see a cougar with Taco's head in it's mouth. My step-father gave his best Marine drill-sergeant roar, and kicked the cougar in the jaw, then kicked it again when it didn't let go after the first one. At that point, it released Taco and ran off shaking it's head (step-father, rather regretfully, thought he might have broken it's jaw; I thought, if so, he might have saved the life of some future hiker). Taco survived, but had a few vet visits. I think the concerns for little dogs are legitimate, if perhaps a bit overblown in most cases.

I am always aware of my surroundings and what's lurking around. My Anatolian Shepherd weighs about 120 lbs, and my Rat Terrier weighs about 13 lbs, and they've been best friends since they were puppies (the Anatolian is about three months older than the Rat Terrier -- she weighed 45 lbs, and the Rattie weighed 4 1/2 lbs, when we got the little Rattie -- so fun to watch them play together. The Anatolian has always been so tolerant and gentle with the little dog.).

❤ this. I have a 5 lb chihuahua and we’re doing scentwork, agility, and trick dog training. She goes to classes with big dogs and does really well. We’ve had to work through some fears, but she started going everywhere with me at an early age. She went on her first road trip vacation at 12 weeks. I have so much fun with her. She’s really good at staying quiet and hidden in her little bag when I have to take her in a business with me b/c I can’t leave her in the car in 100 degree TX heat. I love big dogs too, but with my lifestyle in an apartment and going places both city and out in nature, she’s just perfect. And I can get away with taking her a lot of places I couldn’t with a big dog b/c she’s well behaved and quiet. I’ve worked with her similar to this video, but on a long line b/c we’re on public trails and parks (and I’m just a little more protective. 😂)

Then, I realized I would never own another dog that I cannot easily pick up, carry if injured, need to transfer etc etc. Now I am totally on board with Power to the little dogs. You are correct you’ve got to spend time with them doing normal things, challenge them to be dogs. Consider your life style. I have Cairns now and love them to death. I love your content, Stonnie, and I have learned so much from watching you. You have such a big heart and gentle soul . . . 😊❤ Personally, I am a medium/big dog person. I grew up with Goldens and am drawn to those size and types of dogs. As an adult, I've had Pembroke corgis on two different occasions - they're as small as I would get. Sadly, both are gone and my family of non-dog lovers will not allow me another dog. Some day . . . when kids are gone, I will try again with another Golden or Lab. Maybe I'll throw in a corgi, too, just for the fun of it!❤

My shih Tzu was great. She was so easy to tire out with a short walk, but she could keep up on 3-4 mile hikes and would even swim with me. She did everything my field bred lab and german shepherd can do with me. The only difference was she would be really tired after lol. But it's nice having a tired dog, and small dogs are easy to tire out. Right now I'm sticking to labs but when I get older I will probably switch over to smaller dogs

Yup, teach 'em early to keep watch of where you are so they're near that protection of their leader. What a good little pup. And yes, folks need to see how to teach their dogs how to behave around equipment. Channels that are about "other things", I believe their viewership increases when the channel's co-host is their dog. People love dogs and will watch the channel just to see what the dog they love is up to on that video.

A medium sized spaniel, ranging from the larger Springer to the smaller Cocker is a good compromise between big and small. Furthermore, if you get one from a working line, it will always be up for adventures on land or water from dawn to dusk. If you like dobermans, but can't match their physicality, you might wanna check the Miniature Pinscher out, they're basically travel sized dobermans. Another great video from Uncle Stonnie! Personally I'd love to hear about what small breeds do you like the most. Me personally, despite being born and raised around working line Malinois and currently having one, I'm pretty convinced that my next dog will be a small breed. Ideally, something like a Border Terrier, but if I had to put limits, I'd say whatever's shorter than an Airedale Terrier, taller than a Norfolk Terrier, and lighter than a Staffordshire Bull Terrier would be ok. If I had to name like three breeds, I'd say Border Terrier, Cairn Terrier, or Volpino Italiano. But what about you Stonnie? What are the smaller breeds that you enjoy the most?

My medium/small mutt fits in my small travel trailer much better than a lab. No more need to move the dog so the fridge door can open, and dog and bed can be lifted up and moved when access to other places is needed. Poop is smaller also, when it has to be picked up and bagged. Less food is inhaled. But I do miss the demeanor of my old lab. Can't somebody work to breed smaller labs? The quest seems to be for larger labs and not for more compact sized retrievers.

The wife and I are on our last German shepherds and maybe a small dog would be in our future. Tractors are cool too.

Great video! Our neighbors have issues with coyotes at dusk at our country property. Part of the issue is that we aren’t at the property regularly enough. Likely, that property smells more like coyote than it does people. During the day there are no issues and we enjoy working the land and adventuring the dogs there - even my little 13 pound terrier mix loved it when he was alive. Lots of wildlife smells for them and lots of rabbit poo! Stonnie, what is your B channel’s name?

Actually it happens more in neighborhoods in busy towns, they have been seen in downtown Chicago. Coyotes are a big Nuisance in the Burbs.

The outdoor problem we had with our Chihuahua/JRT mix when she was younger was that she would sometimes follow her nose instead of following/listening us. Now that she's 13y, she's put her hunting days behind her.

I was a large dog only person. Until I met my pomeranian. I really don't know how I lived without her.
