That’s awesome!! Man a 4s that’s a relic in phone terms! I also love the idea of downgrading phone to stop using it. I did that with an iPhone se with a cracked screen not too long ago, and now I have a really strong handle on how much I use my phone!

@WilliamCooper20054 жыл бұрын
ABC Abc yeah, that’s a tricky one as the screen will probably cost as much as your phone is worth! I think the question is: 1) was your SE doing everything you needed it to? 2) how much longer will it do everything you need it to? 3) can you afford to upgrade without too much of a financial hit? I would suggest as the SE is 4 years old, it has not much more support left, so i would consider upgrading. However, i would say get something a generation or two behind, and buy it not on credit but in full. Perhaps even a new SE, or a cheap android. As with that you should get 5 or so years support.

I never got caught up in the cycle. I signed up for a contract to purchase a phone ONCE. It was with Sprint cause I got a Motorola Razr at the time. After that one time, I never signed another contract again. I used that Motorola Razr til I could no longer use it. After that, I bought my first iPhone 5S refurbished and went straight to prepaid. Just upgraded from a 6S to XS two months ago and only paid $575 for a brand new XS. Installed my sim card and kept it moving. I am not planning buying another smartphone in about 6 to 8 years if that long. Smartphones have gotten way over the top with the pricing and all. I'm good. Oh great message in the video.

@@techno_eclipse My thoughts exactly. The only issue I am concerned about is the battery. Since it is still brand new, battery is awesome. So I am good with taking care of my stuffs. Definitely, I will get a lot of use out this XS for sure. Oh I got my XS from eBay. It was right at the beginning of the pandemic. Just so happened to find a XS at that price. I contacted the seller on eBay and asked why the "low price" if the phones refurbished and posted on eBay as "new"? The seller responded and said the pandemic have hurt a lot of businesses and people can't work. So he lowered the price so he can move the inventory. What won me over is when ended the email with this: JUST IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING IF THESE PHONES ARE NEW? YES THEY ARE. BRAND SPANKING NEW! I purchased the next day and got it delivered within two days via FedEx. I was blown away. I am glad that I got it when I did.

I think we are programmed to upgrade every 2 years. Even now with phone payment plans, most carriers as well as apple spread those payments over a 2 year timeframe. My wife's and my phone are about $100 from being paid off and the feeling upgrade fever is very real. Her phone completely died earlier this week and instead buying a new phone we are getting fixed because we still have about 2.5 months of AppleCare left. It takes discipline to pull yourself out of consumerism and keeping things until they don't work anymore. Especially when everyone around us is buying new phones, vehicles etc. Thanks for another video and keep up the great work!

Well, I am, he hasn’t really started to see things this way but that’s my question. How do you and your spouse get into agreement about spending and not spending? We’re always kind of opposite in this. He likes to get all the upgrades, I don’t mind keeping my old stuff and I gotta be honest, because he gets new stuff I get tempted and usually give in 😅

What I did was asked my wife, will you read one book for me and keep an open mind about it? Since she loves me and trusts me she said yes, that book was Dave Ramsey’s total money makeover. I think the idea of not upgrading sucks, but if you can figure out the reason you are doing it, the end goal, it makes it far easier to do. A relationship either makes it way easier or way harder haha, so I would suggest an audio book, because reading to me can sometimes feel intimidating, but anybody can listen to a book, which is what my wife and I did! Hopefully this helps! Remember it’s about doing what’s right for you tomorrow and not what feels good in the moment!

I'm thinking of joining the upgrade program this September when the iPhone 15 comes out I'm going to get the entry level iPhone since I don't see a difference with the pro and I only use one card for everything so I have around $300 to redeem so I'm going to use it toward the apple program since its somewhat cheaper for me since I use one card for everything. It's basically like leasing a car once the term is up you return it. But I'll make sure to put the iPhone to use they might get it back with 80% battery health 😂

I was using my original iPhone SE, which I purchased back in 2018. Its display shattered and it's unusable. I got a Pocophone F3 and I might keep it for a good few years (4-5) to see how long it can last me. I don't like changing phones (or stuff in general) every so often. If I like something, I keep it and use it for as long as I can. I've always wondered why would someone who, let's say, owns an iPhone 13 Pro would go for the iPhone 14 Pro? It makes no sense. In this year's event, they even compared the iPhone 14 Pro / Pro Max (A16 Bionic) to the iPhone 11 (A13 Bionic) because there isn't much of a difference in the processing power between the iPhone 13 Pro / Pro Max and 14 Pro / Pro Max [and they had to show some differences, that's why they chose an even older model]. Yikes.

I have to agree with this! I have an iPhone 12 mini and all I had to do was get a new battery and it works perfectly fine for my needs! No need to upgrade anymore! I’m happy with it now and that’s all that matters and it works well for me! I’m on a budget and I got mine for a really great price deal! So it’s basically the same iPhone as others but it’s ok for me! I used to buy phones constantly but now I’m not doing that anymore because it gets expensive and there’s no reason why I have to upgrade anymore because it’s works why bother spending money on something I don’t need right now?! You make some really strong points. One thing, if you do know to save money with tax write offs (providing you can and are able to do so) that can sometimes save you money as well despite leasing; could be cheaper than owning. I think a good rule of thumb is if you are leasing something (phone, computer, car) you should always be able to purchase it outright...in other words, be able to afford it. If not, then your video is 100% “on the money”, pun intended. Cheers!

This is a top message, in my opinion, specially for younger people. Almost all my stuff over the last 5-6 years (2-3 laptops, 4-5 phones, 5-6 cameras, 3-4 guitars and various other stuff like table, chairs, bed frame, etc) have been used, or second hand. People have a stigma, a taboo, against using used goods. I guess some (most?) of it comes from the fact that there are a lot of shady people out there who want to rip you off. But all it takes is a bit of research on your end to figure out which products are rip-offs and which ones are not. Out of all my second hand purchases so far, I think I got only one iPhone which was kind of a rip-off, in that the display went bad within 3 months of buying it. But that too was most likely incidental, and was definitely not something the seller was aware of, as I used the phone with no problems for 3 months. But besides that fear of getting ripped off due to lack of experience in dealing with used goods, I feel like the bigger reason for the stigma against used goods is vanity. "I don't use second hand stuff, lol" - that attitude. And I don't understand why. Because clearly, the smart thing to do is to use used goods, as you're saving a ton of money and getting 80-90% of the functionality, if not more, of the latest and greatest stuff that's released. And then you can sell it for not much less than you bought it for, when you want to replace it with a newer, better product. It's about the cost of ownership (= buying price - selling price) of stuff, and obviously as soon as you buy something brand new, and walk out of the store, it's value is reduced by 30-40%. But I guess common sense is not so common. Oh well...
@techno_eclipse4 жыл бұрын
I subscribe by the saying of “you make or lose money when you buy, not when you sell” I do that with everything, car, iphone, laptop, etc. people are so concerned with used that they cripple themselves financially in order to buy new. But guess what? After one use that new product is used hahaha. So you brought a new phone to use it new 1 time and now it’s perpetually used lol

Smartphones typically don't last longer than 2-3 years, you will not receive security updates that is very dangerous especially if you do banking on your phone. The only exception is iPhone which get updates for 5+ years.
@samirmoghe15534 жыл бұрын
I recommend that people with iphone 10 above need not upgrade to iphone 12 or iphone 12 pro max even if it has better high grade camera, as most people need camera only for selfies or family/friend photos, unless the iphone upgrade is a significant upgrade from below iphone 10 models. Since 5G network is being introduced for the 1st time it consumes more battery, if you can wait until next year September, the Iphone 13 and iphone 13 pro max would come with higher battery life and higher refresh rate of 120 hertz and that too if you really need the upgrade ,otherwise current models are also fine.

My mom has the mindset of "just pay through payments monthly" and I eventually got the same mindset until I realized my mistake. My mom is an immigrant and doesn't really know how the American credit works. She just knows that a lot of Americans don't own their things because it's leased so she thinks it's normal to buy things leased. It's the American way she would say. Then you give back the phone and take a new loan on the next lool the phone only cost 779 which is a much better deal as you get to keep it.

Theres a lot of misinformation in this video with this anti upgrading agenda. There’s nothing wrong with wanting the latest tech, especially if you can afford it. The upgrade program is just a way for you to get the newest phone without buying it at full price. If you like phone you have while on the program, then you can keep it and pay it off. The phone is yours to keep. Just bc you’re on the upgrade program, you’re not obligated to upgrade to newest phone. If you really think about it, the phone is 540$ bc you need a minimum of 12 months (45$/month) before upgrading. Which is a good if you plan on upgrading every year bc you want the new phone. That’s better than dropping 1000 on a new phone annually. I bought my 12 pro outright

Slick Rick, he's trying to get people out of the mindset of upgrading all the time when their current phone works just fine. The goal is to put your money elsewhere. If you keep renting, you'll never be able to save money. All phones work basically the same, so you're really not getting an upgrade.
