In the darkness of special places like the Endeavour Hydrothermal Vents, ocean research is bringing to light deep secrets about life on earth and potentially elsewhere in our universe. “Black Smokers” and hydrothermal vents create an ecologically-rich oasis in the deep sea where chemosynthetic creatures thrive and chemicals provide life-sustaining energy.
At a depth of over 2 km, the management of Canada’s first Oceans Act Marine Protected Area (MPA) at Endeavour Hydrothermal Vents is challenging. An organism from this site holds the current record for the upper temperature limit to life: 121 degrees Celsius! Scientists strive to uncover secrets of the formation of Earth’s tectonic plates, chemosynthetic food webs and a potential glimpse of the origins of life on our planet, and perhaps its origins on others.
In 2013, Fisheries and Oceans Canada who is responsible for managing Canada’s MPA’s, began collaborating with Ocean Networks Canada who has been operating a world-leading cabled observatory at Endeavour since 2009. www.oceannetwo...

Good work Canada! One point: Alkaline hydrothermal vents more likely site for origin of life. It would be good to say if the same area has those as well as black smokers.

This is an excellent presentation and certainly engages inquiring minds.

I'd renounce my citizenship and come up and work on that project in a heartbeat. Also would be willing to put down $200 (USD or CND) that there will be analogous vents and similar chemosynth critters on some of ice moons of the gas giants. That most likely won't get answered in the next 30 years though. Like the Dr said, the vents are beating out the tidal pool hypothesis for abiogenesis street cred ;p

Alguém sabe como os animais toleram essas substâncias tóxicas na água? Como que eles conseguiram se adaptar?

There would be multiple start points for life, not just one, just because it starts does not mean it survives.

The life forms that live in these boiling waters should be looked at for sending life to Mars......

The DNA of these life forms should be studied for the possibilities of creating plants that can withstand the harsh and sometimes toxic atmosphere of Mars......

Mars doesn't have a "toxic" atmosphere, it barely has an atmosphere at all, your main concern on mars is not "can I breathe the air here?" its, "were is the air to breathe!?" that said there is a very thin atmosphere but it is mainly CO2. The other concern would be the temperature, mars is VERY cold as the atmosphere is too thin to really retain any heat, another thing to consider is that the core of mars is not molten so it generates a negligible magnetic field leaving anything on the surface vulnerable to the harsh radiation the sun puts out. I"m not saying that these creatures are not worthy of further study, just that they may not be very relevant to mars colonization , as most he the life forms that deep are used to extreme pressure, little to no light, minimal high energy radiation, and extreme heat.
