Endeavour OS, in my opinion, is the best Arch distro that currently exists. I'm biased of course, but my opinion is based on 14 month of continuous use and zero problems.
In fact Endeavour OS has helped change my mind about how suitable Arch systems are for brand new users, and I would now say that, whatever your level of skill or experience, the chances are you will get on great with Endeavour.
Update it once a week, use the wiki and friendly community to increase your knowledge, and customise it to suit yourself.
This video is a showcase of Endeavour's latest release, which I can find nothing to criticise.
In summary, what are you waiting for? Just install Endeavour and stop hopping :-)
I hope you enjoy the video :-)

EndeavourOS is the only recommendation I give for Arch based distros, even over my own (thanks for the shout-out!). My own project is good for the tinkerer if you want to build your own personal ISO, but I don't provide all the perks that come with EndeavourOS. EOS provides tons of docs and a community, which makes all the difference when deciding on what to recommend. Cool video, thanks. 😀

I am the definition of a serial distro hopper and I absolutely loved endeavor and everything it stood for. I'm definitely looking towards giving it a second run with openbox. I've been stuck cycling between mabox, Archcraft and axyl the last few months so I'm due for a change. Thank you again for another great video OTB! One day I'm going to find that magical distro, or make my own when I gain the knowledge lol

As a Ubuntu user, I tried several distros, setting on debían and Arch Linux. After testing Manjaro, I realised by using it, how powerful and elegant Arch Linux is! I read a little and stumbled upon a nice compromise between ease of installation and flexibility and Endeavour OS was the choice. After reading the tutorials I was installing from source in no time, getting all the features of other distros installed and learning more about Linux than ever before. Even offline install is the fastest option for installation as my wireless card was detected, get my desktop of choice later and be ready to go. Thank you for your video as my conclusion was the same as yours. Endeavour OS is now my daily driver and my journey through Linux. Take care.

Great video. This is a distro that I have been watching lately. Currently I am running Artix and have everything set up the way I like and haven't felt like changing anything at the moment. I was really impressed with the community Openbox version of Endeavour. Im a bit of a "ram usage fetishist" and have ran XFCE on various distributions because it felt like the most basic usable desktop that I could have, anything else was very difficult. However, Openbox + tint2 on Endeavour has been a dream to run and saves a bit of ram ;).

Hi! Thanks for the video. I really enjoyed it. I've been running Endeavour for week now. I also have Manjaro on my other computer. When you talk about maintenance of a Arch system, you really should mention pacdiffs too. Endeavour seems to have a nice little tool for the job. I haven't tested it yet, because havent' got any pacdiff files yet. But on my Manjaro machine I run pacdiff -o command few times a year. Compare pacdiff files with meld, make some changes if needed. And then delete .pacdiff files. Maybe you should make a video for this too. Cheers!

I tried EndeavourOS on a laptop, not long after it first came out. No issues whatsoever, as I recall. I didn't stay with it, but that was not in any way due to the distro's performance. I have lingering doubts about recommending it to any and all first-time Linux users. But were the person motivated and knew how to do a bit of research should trouble hit, I would have no qualms. Happy New Year!

Hi, I have EndeavourOs in one of my laptops with a XFCE DE.... awesome... no problems at all...but, when I discover Archlabs I found out what I was looking for... pure Arch you can rice as you want... I have it running with plasma, xfce, dwm, i3 in other hardware and it is perfect... this is personal preference and the freedom to chose... Endeavour, Archlabs and Arco Linus are simply great... I used Manjaro KDE for the last 3 years but it is eating my RAM and this is the reason why I changed to Endeavour and Archlabs... in Archlabs, plasma starts with 425 MG of RAM with all the applications I need... Manjaro with 865MG... great work my friend.

Before I installed vanilla Arch the now defunct Antergos was my distro of choice. I ran it alongside Manjaro but liked the idea that Antergos was basically pure Arch made easy to install and I never had a moment's problem with it. I understand Endeavour was founded by a few of the old Antergos team so I'm delighted to learn the high standards have clearly been maintained and the OS made even more attractive. I'm fascinated with Void at the moment but will give Endeavour a run soon. Also look forward to a Slackware vid when possible, OTB. Gentoo will be my final big challenge!
@Bob-of-Zoid
@Bob-of-Zoid 2 жыл бұрын
Endeavour was not founded by any team member of Antergos of which there were only two. It was spawned by a few capable people of the already existing Antergos community, after the Antergos team closed shop (nothing evil, just life). Also Antergos had a lot of problems EOS doesn't have, and contrary to your belief, EOS is the more Vanilla one! I know, I was on Antergos for a few years before it's developers shut it down, and in the community making suggestions submitting graphics, voting on methods and features... Lots of people were involved and a few forks of Antergos made, but all of those added to much and took more specific routs, like bias to a specific DE, preinstalled apps... EOS came from all of those who didn't want to make a distro as such and pile on stuff, but keeping it open and "Do as YOU wish" and why I and others jumped on board. Others made Antergos forks to "make it more like Windows"... and crap like that, and become authoritarian leaders and what not. The ones who wanted that had their space, where they could argue and fight about it, and split into factions, which they did. Where are their distro's now? EndeavourOS aimed to be even more vanilla Arch, but with more user selectable options than Antergos, and easier by having a more comprehensive and easy to use installer that actually works, and easier access to those options. On that note the maintenance AKA Welcome app, is in the same vein, it just puts a bunch of maintenance tasks in one neat place, and the ability to use a GUI to use it. It's mainly just tiny scripts under the hood. The EOS repo is only for EOS specific stuff, mainly scripts to fix stuff, like NVIDIA tweaks... and all great things to have, all system related but the fan made wallpapers and the like, no gimmickry. You use the Arch repo for software, and the AUR if you dig, and install anything you like. Of course if you install a DE, you will have apps bundled with those as those too are vanilla as supplied by their makers. If you want, you can even omit a DE or WM on install, and you can also change the install script further if you wish.

I have only used Manjaro as an Arch distro at this point. I tried Peppermint on an old laptop, but it was running so slow I replaced it with Mint XFCE and it was better. Otherwise I have been an Ubuntu and Mint guy until a few weeks ago. Mint has been my distro of choice. It just works. So far Manjaro has been good thus far, but I've had a few hiccups with the rolling kernel and have had less hiccups running the LTS kernel on Manjaro. I have been using the real time kernel because I am doing some audio work in Ardour. Having a fair amount of experience with Linux now, I'm tempted to do a proper Arch install at this point just to learn Linux better. I was never a distro hopper because I just wanted something that worked and ran easily. Manjaro seems to be doing that for me right now.

I've been using Linux on my laptop I take to work (retail shop with a very low volume of customers) quite a bit and installed and played with a lot of different distros on bare metal as I have spare drives. I too have settled on using EndeavourOS while I really suss out how to configure things post install in a virtual machine with arch. Regarding Endeavour and really any linux distro I'd love to see a video of maybe how to "harden" your fresh installs. I see a lot of server hardening videos with pertinent information but never really found one that was customized for someone using it with some type of desktop environment or WM. I'm learning and am at the stage where I realize how easy it is to get into my raspberry pi and it made me really see a lot of potential holes or risks but im still just unsure because I don't really know the end to end steps to secure myself to be in public or even at home. Sorry maybe I'm just paranoid because I'm still a Linux noob and the security procedures are different switching from windows. Like making another user for myself. Closing ports etc. I just dont know.

Arch has now an installer, so you can now officially install Arch the non-Arch way. For me Endeavour OS is an fancy Arch installer. Still think that everyone that is going to use Arch (or Arch-based) should install Arch the (old) Arch-way once or twice. It is more time-consuming but you get more knowledge about your system. But now I am running Endeavour OS on my main system, and besides a few handy tools (And the ease of using Nvidia-drivers) It is Arch.
@lizardwizard4542
@lizardwizard4542 Жыл бұрын
For Windows users I can recommend to install Arch the Arch-way for at least 100 times if your plan is to really study the roots, until stuff starts making sense to you and it will - for some it happens quicker obviously as we all are not equal in intelligence. Those who only have 1 laptop (from my experience, specifically an laptop) and no other main computers, are going to learn the quickest :) that's how it happened with me! However these days I do have an desktop with Arch in addition to my old laptop where I originally learned it on. There is no going back to Windows for me for every day use. However, I am making an exception: if there is an big game release that I don't want to miss (such as Diablo 4 in 2023) then sure I'll install Windows for a month or until it becomes playable via Lutris (: the launch of a big game release is very important to me. I game on my linux machine all the time, and I already know that D4 will not likely be available from first moment on linux + I don't want to deal with any artifacts, glitches and such on the launch day in addition to Blizzard servers being down on their every release xD I hope this makes sense why I'd install Windows for a specific purpose, even though I've been using Arch now for 5 years.

I wonder what you actually need that Endeavor has and Manjaro hasn't? That wasn't really explained (other than you think they do some testing for no reason whatsoever). I assume you need faster release cycle for some packages and I wonder what they lag with that makes it unsuitable. I use manjaro and arch and I don't feel absolutely any difference between them to be honest, after installation.

Hello people. Could you give me a tip on wether I wouldn't regret starting off with Endeavour instead of Manjaro as the first Arch distro as a newbie Linux user? I kept reading/hearing that Manjaro is the beginner friendly Arch distro, and Endeavour's tagline - "A terminal-centric distro" - kind of suggests the opposite. But is the beginner friendliness really considerably different? Because if not, I would be more into Endeavour based on OTB's first couple of thoughts in this video.

@@OldTechBloke Well I just might give my first go at Arch with that instead of Manjaro then, seeing as you had experience with both. (I'm not explicitly against the terminal btw., and I know it is ultimately unavoidable, I'm just afraid I would be much more lost in the beginning when I do not know close to any command and parameters I would need for a task/problem. But if one distro doesn't offer more readable, easier to find aid/clues in this regard, then it should be ok.) Thanks.

Yes, but all the bells and whistles are there, and you can tweak it to the max. I like it that way: My way! You have a choice of like 7 DE's and a few WM's on install, and I don't think they messed with any of them. They come as supplied from their makers, and the only embellishment you get are EOS wallpapers and color scheme where applicable.

Done basic arch installs the arch way years back. When i definatly switched to linux from windows a few weeks back i just installed Endeavour, slapped pamac onit and am sailing off basicly. Not sure wy they are opposed to giving the option to install pamac but i guess they want to keep it as basic as possible. Reason i didnt go for Manjaro was i read about some drama there and the fact that its not 100% vanilla arch. Thats ofcouse an ingredient for breaking it easily when using AUR. Not pretending to be a Linux nerd at all but it does help if you know your way around.

Something in the current ISO - is causing alot of Install Fails - and the "Fixes" - don't fix it. On line - or - offline - keeps on failing. the Endeavor OS - people say they've released a new ISO - but so far I've had no luck with it? What gives.

As a purist, the best Arch distro is Arch, as an Arch user myself I agree, Endeavour just works. I dislike Manjaro simply because they deviate to far away from Vanilla for my liking.

At the start of this video you raise the spectre of the 'New Linux User'. I often wonder just who these people are, what their background is and why have they decided to switch to Linux. Does anyone really know the demographics of new users ? I started using Linux about 3 years ago because I had an old laptop and no other computer. I had dabbled in desktop Linux as long ago as the late 1990s (remember those magazines with cover disc distros ?) and I had some experience of Linux (or Unix ) based servers. I don't actually know any other Linux users so, apart from KZbin, I am at a loss to know exactly who uses desktop Linux.

I did a video about who are Linux users some time ago. Just my opinions of course but I tend to feel it appeals in general to the more technically user. I used to belong to a LUG and that was certainly correct with the users I met

I am new to Linux, and an old-school geek. I have used Windows since the day of Windows 95. I did try Zorin 9 as having an option, but it was not as good back then. I dual boot Zorin 16 Pro with Windows 10 Pro. I would drop Windows, but I have to have Office 365 for school, and also trying to transition to a career in Help Desk/IT Support. Overall, my Zorin 16 does better than Windows 10.

@@OldTechBloke I was thinking specifically about the profile of a new user. I often wonder where the new recruits are coming from or is it just existing users distro hopping (a waste of time for an experienced user but we have all done it).
