I'll try to explain the story/ending because it is not comprehensible the first time you play the game: Dahlia Gillespie and her cult wanted to use Alessa Gillespie as a surrogate mother for "God". They perform a ritual on her in which she is set on fire and, trying to escape the pain, Alessa splits her soul and thereby creates Cheryl. The ritual cannot be completed as her soul is incomplete. Alessa is brought to the hospital where she is only kept alive by the unborn God inside her. This also creates the Otherworld, Alessa's "personal hell" which expands to the remaining town. The monsters you fight come from Alessa's imagination. After 7 years, Alessa's pain is so intense that she calls Cheryl back to Silent Hill to reunite with her, which Dahlia does at the end of the game. In the bad ending, you fight the Incubator which is Alessa herself. In the good ending, which requires you to save Dr. Kaufman in the resort, Dr. Kaufman throws the red liquid on her (the one you used on Cybil) which results in the premature birth of God and you fight the Incubus that possessed Alessa. Alessa doesn't survive either way but reincarnates as a new baby for Harry. As a side note, since you're already playing SH2, none of this is important to SH2, it's an unrelated story with a different interpretation of the town.

It is actually so different from SH1 that it flopped in Japan and almost got the series canceled until it suddenly became popular in the US & Europe. Masahiro Ito (the art director of SH 1-3, Short Message, and SH2 Remake) still talks a lot about this on Twitter :D

@@kristinaF54 While SH2 played in a different iteration of the universe, SH3 is actually the sequel to SH1. No spoilers for that, but if you found the SH1 story compelling, then SH3 is a must play, just because it is also probably one of the best gameplay wise either way.

The dark version of Silent Hill's Otherworld wasn't created until Cheryl arrived in town, as her presence amplified Alessa's powers. Silent Hill 2 does take place in the same world, although it's a self contained story with no connection to the original game.

First of all, congrats on figuring out all the puzzles. Well done. Second, i should mention that neither Cheryl or Alessa are evil. This is something i absolutely hate in the movie. Alessa is a tormented girl who only wants to keep the world from armageddon and be released from her pain. The movie made her a blod-thirsty, vengeful spirit because they misunderstand her intentions. So, here's the breakdown of the story (i tried an failed to be succinct. Sorry. 😅) Silent Hill was once a sacred area that housed a great spiritual power. A cult arose in the area that didn't like the fact that the younger generation was leaving and that the town was being converted into a tourist destination. Using drugs, they recruited new members and they arranged "accidents" for the people developing the town. Alessa Gillespie was born in Silent Hill to Dahlia, her fanatic mother. Alessa was not an ordinarry kid, though. She had psychic abilities. And because of that, her mother saw her as a vessel to birth her cult's god. She was tormented at school by her peers because of her power and was abused by her mother. She was a sad, isolated girl. When she was 7, Dahlia offered her up as a sacrifice to be impregnated by her god. Naturally, Alessa didn't want any part of it, and was forcefully sacrificed. It's unclear if her burning was a part of the ritual itself, or if it was purely a consequence of what happened next, but during the ritual, her psychic abilities went haywire and caused a boiler to malfunction, lighting her house and several others on fire. She was trapped in the blaze, badly burned and taken to Alchemilla Hospital. She wasn't treated like a normal patient, however. Michael Kaufmann saw to her placement in a secret room in the Hospital basement for treatment. He had been the one supplying the cult with drugs and was promised wealth and power if he kept their dealings quiet. The nurse in charge was Lisa Garland, an addict that Kaufman forced to care for Alessa, who was now impregnated by the cult's god. She had used her power to split her soul in two, and a baby appeared on the side of the road, an incarnation of Alessa who would be adopted by Harry and his wife, and given the name Cheryl. For seven years, Alessa was trapped in a horribly burned body, fading in and out of consciousness in an endless nightmare of pain, but without Cheryl, the god could not be born, and Alessa could never die. This caused Dahlia to use a spell to call the other half of her soul back to Silent Hill, and Cheryl, having recently lost her adopted mother, asked her father to take her to the resort. Alessa tried to stop this, and appeared on the road in front of Harry's vehicle in astral form. However, this caused him to crash, and this is where the game begins, Cheryl being drawn to reunite with her other half, and Alessa using her psychic abilities and the Seal of Metatron (what Dahlia called the Mark of Samael) to seal Silent Hill off from the rest of existence. But as Harry and the player would find out, as her influence spread throughout the town, the ancient spiritual power that resided there would manifest her nightmares, projecting monsters and a hellish Otherworld (a projection of her own nightmares) in her wake. Using gyromancy (a form of divination), Dahlia used Harry to get the Flauros artifact close to Alessa and break her influence, plunging them all into Nowhere. As Dahlia reunited the two halves of Alessa's being (her bandaged body in the wheelchair, and Cheryl beside her wearing Alessa's dress), she takes the form of the Incubator. But Kaufmann steps in, having felt betrayed by the cult, shooting Dahlia and uses the red liquid, Aglaophotis (a substance said to drive out evil), to force the god from the Incubator's body in the form of the Incubus (the Baphomet-looking demon in the other endings). Once Harry defeats this form of the god, Kaufman is dragged down by the memory of Lisa, to his deserved punishment, and Alessa protects Harry from the collapse of the nightmare world, and presents him with a baby, herself reborn to a loving father, and Harry escapes (with Cybil if the player saves her). Also, every enemy and location you encounter in the game is something from Alessa's past and/or symbolic of her torment. She was scared of dogs, hence the Groaners. She read books like The Lost World, hence the Air Screamers. She was afraid of bugs (the Creepers and the Hanged Scratchers), except for butterflies (The Twin Feeler and Floatstinger). She was tormented by other children (the Grey Children and Mumblers), adults (the Rompers) and felt small, helpless, and invisible to others (the Larval Stalkers which become the hostile Stalkers while under Dahlia and the god's influence). She used to imagine the boiler room at the school was making the sound of a creature from a fairy tale that she read (the Splithead) and heard rumors of the abandoned waterworks leading to the lake. The Other Church was a place of worship for her mother's cult and she was held captive in a Hospital. Nowhere represents her psychic influence broken and her psyche crumbling, which is why it's an amalgamation of all previous areas. There are five different endings to this game. Bad, Bad+, Good, Good+, and a joke ending you can only get on a Next Fear playthrough. For saving Cybil, you got the Bad+ ending, but for not completing the Kaufmann sidequest, you missed the Good and Good+ ending. If you killed Cybil and missed Kaufmann, you get the Bad ending. Each Silent Hill game rates your playthrough on a 10-star rating. Hope you enjoyed this. The original Silent Hill is my favorite out of the series for its originality and its overall horror presentation, although SH2 is far more psychological and better written, and SH3 is the most technically proficient. SH4 is divisive amongst fans, but I love it. You're going to have a blast with this series. It does go downhill sharply after the 4th entry, but there are a few decent spots in the latter half of the franchise, though none of them measure up to the original 4 and some are just bad. Looking forward to the next one, and for your take on the experience as a whole. Edit: I should probably say that i dont mind if you like the movie, since ive made a lot of negative inferences to it, but i hate it and im just trying to give context. I think it dumbs down, misinterprets, and arbitrarily makes changes to the source material that it didn't need to. Ultimately, the plot suffers and all of the symbolic elements are betrayed because they had to insert "iconic" elements from later games that dont relate at all to Alessa's story. It looks good and i like Cybil for the most part, but as a whole, as a HUGE fan of this series, it just irks me. As such, im always thrilled to see people playing this game. I hope it left as big an impression on you as it did for me.

Those endings that you saw are poorly edited, each ending has different scenes and different songs, the ending where you don't save Cybil and they give you the baby at the end everything goes to heaven after leaving the fighting zone. The canon ending is a song in Spanish, sung by a woman.

Another good silent hill is called The Room. It's first person all the time your in your apartment but once you find a way out it switches to 3rd person, but the moment you go back it's 1st person again. Very good puzzles and story.

You screwed up with the endings because it doesn't make sense Harry would run all the way for a boat while there's a bar he could relax very near him, don't forget by the moment he leaves the sewer, the resort's information panel is right across his sight, informing him about Annie's Bar.

That was a trippy journey, congratulations on finishing the game! The endings where Lisa appears are the result of exploring the resort area before the boat, where you discover the doctor was part of the plot.

In the very least, it could be said that Cheryl had a parent who loved her before the end. But yeah, this game isn't great about being clear when it comes to explaining what it's all about and what's happening. I'm sure other comments have covered what everything actually meant and led up to. All that said, it's super fun to see peoples' first reactions to my favorite games. I hope you enjoyed this one a lot, and will try others. 2 has an active fan community that has done tons of work to enhance the PC port. But anyway, yeah. Thanks for taking me on this journey with you. Looking forward to more. :)

The developers had fun here, and it shows: with the puzzles, with the keys, with the symbols, with the endings, one of which you can tell is the real one. It's a title that still gets people talking about it, as it's a legendary survival horror title.

It’s been awhile since I played this but to get the “best” ending, you have to go out of your way to meet Kaufman at some point and you get a sad cutscene with Lisa…that ending theme is one of my favorites too (“Tears of..”)

okay let me tell you the story: Alessa is dahlia's daughter and she has some kind of a power so her mother "who is a part of a cult" wanted that power to summon the god "a devil" by making her daughter the mother of it and to feed the "god" she must be angry so dahlia made sure Alessa have the worst life ever "by being bullied at school or abused by her" in the end dahlia burned the house with Alessa inside but because of Alessas powers she could live by splitting her soul to make the baby Harry found " cheryl " and after those years cheryl really wanted to visit silent hill so Harry took her there and you started the game in that point

@LIZZgame just an fyi in case you do want to play this again: if I remember correctly every new game+ automatically goes to the next difficulty. I played on easy the first time and got the gas can for the chainsaw/ concrete drill and then it put me on normal. I got the alien ending on the second play through and it put me on hard for the third. Even with the weapon you get from the alien ending hard was very difficult.

The most interesting thing about this game for me is that supposedly all the horrors and monsters represent a part of Alessa's subconscious. Her memories, her pain, her depression and isolation... Being a kid that was bullied, that was burned by her own mother and burned alive, put into a large and painful recovery in the basement of the hospital. And some people trying to use her power. Even when i first played this game, i didn't know all that, but i was thinking... "what could all this represent?". My imagination was flying far. I thought about the atom bomb; about a dictatorship; about Harry being a serial killer with amnesia or something. I thought the game was about HIS subconscious, not Alesa's. Anyway it was fascinating.

Hey Lizz... if you liked Silent Hill, i'd recommend you the first 4 games. Up until The Room the franchise was pretty amazing. IMO that game (The Room) is the scariest and hardest of them all. After that the last games were rather... bad lol. Hope you get to play SH2 when the remake comes out!
