I'm so thankful this game took the "irredeemable/deadbeat parent being put through psychological hell/limbo" story you see in most horror indie games and flipped it on its head. It actually gives more clever context and foreshadowing in its plot as well as slight agency to the protagonist at the end. Really nice surprise.

Holy CRUD. I totally understand why the devs asked for the last chapter to not be played before the game's release! That was an incredible twist with just enough foreshadowing behind it to hint something was off - chinatown, the objects in the orbs, "Walter" being terrified at what he did and not able to understand *why*. That last one was actually what had my curiosity the most! As you said, the "bad dad" trope in psychological horror is pretty common. However, when the reveal happens, usually there's just acceptance and the character repents or dies or whatever. But Walter seemed not only horrified but *confused*, even with all the backstory picked up... and that had me wondering. But I NEVER could have imagined that the twist would be something like this. Oh, I'm delighted. I hope we see more from this dev! And kudos to the VA!

Wow, just when I was expecting "father who killed his family and can't remember" for the umpteenth time this game took a hard turn into evil corporate conspiracy. I thought the production values looked too good to waste on an overused plot and I'm glad for the fun change of pace!

There's a lot of wishful thinking (that corporations are interestingly evil, instead of just kinda incompetent) and super science that tends to go into these things, but especially with the aid of super science there's a lot more variations to explore. Bad parent stories nearly always involve having killed one or more of their family members and it doesn't get any more interesting than possibly how.

Fake memories isn't rare in phycological horror stories. but how they handled it was great i'm pretty sure CJU played a game where the ending was waking up in the real world in an abandoned lab. the program had something to do with rehabilitating bad people. i wish we could have seen more living NPCs. far too many of these games have only the player alive or even existing as far as we can tell. still, i would say this is above average for these kind of experiences, great work developer Pixelsplit

13:03 Looking at that map, those are Interesting choice of names the company is using. Norn, the company name, is the collective name of the goddesses of fate. Skuld, Verd, and Urd. The names of some of the areas, are the names of each sister. Didn't expect a Norse mythology inspiration

I loved this game! I liked that they didn't follow the predictable horror trope thru. Honestly I kind of still thought the end was going to be an M. Night Shyamalan type plot twist where it's revealed or hinted at that this was yet another memory being forced on him (in the letter he reads before going into the machine they talk about wanting to use more intense and awful memories on him moving forward since he has been able to withstand so far). Plus, and maybe I missed something, but how did all of that stuff already happen out in the lab, dead bodies and blood having been there a while, an email gossiping about the lockdown from another employee, and he has memories of having done these things already but he only just escaped?? To be fair, I paused and haven't seen the other endings yet so maybe they answer these😅 Ok back to it then, thanks for the great video good sir!

There's a scifi novel by Samuel R. Delany "The Fall of the Towers". A side story is about young teen from a seaside village who joins the military and their basic training is mostly mental conditioning with similar methods. *Spoilers* When he gets sent off to war its a virtual simulation. He met a girl before and made a neclace of shells for her. In the "war" he finds and befriends a strange bird creature with eyes like the shells. Near the end a race of telepaths who were working with the govt to supress the reality of this war, break the supression and the people become aware. The girl sadly sits touching her necklace and sees the boy's psyche was trying to bring her into the dream war conditioning as an anchor to reality. The soldiers were actually in sleep compartments dreaming the war. When one was selected to die in combat by a random computer game the chamber simply flash burned them. The memory replacement scenario is an interesting concept and was handled very well in the game.

"No solving puzzle boxes" learned from Hellraiser, reinforced with this game lol. The twist in this one was very, very cool! If you're open to suggestions and looking for another "everything you know is a lie" type game, I suggest American Arcadia. It's not a memory replacement story but is still pretty trippy at some points, and has a more comedic tone.

OK, that was good. I'm glad they put in the effort, and they ended up doing not just something different but something interesting with the twist. Looked like the initial research was fairly ethical (the email about the breakthrough talked about their initial subject wanting to continue, implying they had informed consent and were a volunteer), but the moment the backers got involved everything went Tango Uniform. Not just the abductions and the implied murder of anyone who wanted out, but they also pushed the process too fast. It's a big jump to go from a simple number sequence to full-on Westworld levels of mindfuckery.

The symbol was the one thing that seemed out of place throughout the game. He was obviously the test subject the govt sent them from the military. Which had to be how he was able to expertly "deal" with the staff. Implanting the bad husband and father scenario into a soldier had to be where they and the govt went wrong. Those guys are supposed to be conditioned to serve and protect home and country. His training and their implant conflicted.

Working title: "Norn Can Remember It for You Wholesale (Whether You Want to or Not)" This felt like Layers of Fear turned on its head. They took the core themes and gameplay (low-tech time period, abusive parent, unclear memories, changing environment), but instead of the common trope of "psychological distress + maybe supernatural stuff", they made it into real-world-setting science fiction story.

There's a tv horror film by Wes Craven "Chiller" starring Beatrice Straight. A woman has her son cryogenically frozen. When he's revived they're unaware he passed and something else entered his body. It'd be interesting to see a story like this game's where the project planners overlook a supernatural aspect to the test subjects.

At the end of the last part I was entirely convinced that he had killed his family, died, and was reliving the experience in hell or something similar -- because that's the route most games tend to take with a story like this one. I'm not even 100% convinced as to it being him. Neither personality seemed violent nor had a history of violence. Add to the fact that he went on a rampage through the facility but then just went back to bed in his fake house? Something doesn't add up. Edit: I think they made him do it, like used the memory modification to make him violent to wipe out the facility. Think about it, the containment breach had to of happened hours before hand, and no one in the company sent anyone?

@@rosssnyder4490 Interesting hypothesis, Ross. 👍 Admittedly, it's 4:00 am here and my brain isn't fully functioning, but my questions would be: 1) who reprogrammed Liam to make him violent; 2) what was their motivation; and 3) how did they intend to escape Liam's murderous frenzy? Do you think someone programmed him to kill in order to ensure there'd be no potential loose cannons left after the containment breach? Did that individual intend to destroy all documentation and computer files in order to obscure what the purpose of the facility really was? And, then, did that individual get caught up in Liam's killing spree before they could destroy evidence and escape? Am I over thinking this?? 😶🤣

@@Scriptor13 I know it’s been a while since Chris posted this video, but I just got around to watching it. I kind of have a theory that Liam didn’t actually kill everyone; with the blood outside of the exit door he couldn’t get out of until the end, and the emails about needing to take the experiment outside of the facility, I kind of wonder. It would be difficult to explain why he remembers the people being shot, but perhaps he was there for whomever murdered everyone. I would assume the murdered let Liam live since they were both test subjects. Just my two cents ☺️ Hope you are doing well!
