@@vashusan1984 i think a lot of people haven’t ridden new school enduro bikes, and don’t have any idea just how well they pedal. The days of enduro bikes being completely terrible to pedal are over. Hey Evan, I’m sure you may have heard this. But the only thing with the shock is that it doesn’t have a piggy back, the piggy back is idea for enduro bikes because it is able to hold more oil and therefore stays cooler and working better longer on big DH days. So if you notice on any longer DH days that your shock is having some issues that could be the reason. Thanks for the content and keep it up!

When replacing your shock, keep in mind that new and pre-owned shocks come with a bike manufacturer specific pre-tune. Commencal uses a soft rebound and soft dampening pre-tune. While for example Yeti uses a medium rebound and dampening pre-tune. Just because the shock fits eye to eye, does not mean it will work how it's suppose to.

I agree the SX is a bit overbiked for the trails you're generally riding on, but hey, it's a sick bike and handles amazingly, the FC/RC balance is so good, Commencal nailed it. I also built one up as a bike that I can just beat on that can handle anything and it is definitely that. You should definitely take it on a trip to a bike park or somewhere with some serious steep rocky tech, you'll be blown away at how much of a beating that thing can take. I have tried to overwhelm mine and its able to handle pretty much anything you throw at it. The SX loves steep sketchy trails.

The SX is a great bike, good choice. If you watch Commencals website, historically in the component section, they in the past would fire sale the left over production inventory after models discontinue. The SX uses the 62.5 shock while the newer bikes from other mfgs seem to use the 65 shock, so likely Commencal will go to 65 on the next design (I'm speculating). New design is out in 2023 according to rumor. Thats a place to watch / track to save money, but honestly with your channel viewership you could probably get a free shock from somewhere. This is all assuming you actually want a shock upgrade, what you have will be fine in Bentonville but once you start putting in 8-10 hour days with 30-40 miles of actual descending (no including the lifts) at the bike parks, that shock is not going to live long. My only real advice here is, Double Down rear tire, or equivalent from other mfg. The cushcore won't save the Exo tread or sidewalls once you start to carry speed through the rocks in DH parks.

Thanks for the comment man! I have a shuttle trail system real close by and I want to try out the long days you mention. Would help a ton on skills, comfortability with chunk/steep. @@EvansMTBSaga the DH parks will progress ability very quickly. They will not stress your legs but your neck, shoulders, traps, arms, chest, etc, all will be sore after long days descending. Mountain bikes don't have to be fragile at all, you just have to use the right components. Not too long ago we were all climbing hills on freeride bikes that weighed a light 42 pounds and nothing would break or pop when hucking ourselves off stair gaps or retaining walls at the local mall. I would suggest finding a true downhill bike to sample. If you have access to the right trails, something with a dual-crown fork and 200mm travel front and rear will change your world. Cheers!

If there's one thing my enduro bike taught me, it's that I have to trust the shitload of money I spent on it. 🤣 My previous Marin Attack Trail had the whole 9 yards; a piggyback, 170mm fork, 203mm rotors front and rear, everything. It felt so slow and cumbersome on flat ground, but when I let go of the brakes and pump it downhill, it just floats over boulders and monster trucks everything while tracking straight. The frame has since cracked since it's an 8yo bike that's been with many hard-charging owners throughout its life and I miss it dearly. So I wish nothing for you but the best with your Meta SX!

I've owned an enduro bike, a 2017 trek slash 9.8 (150/160) I brought it because a local lift access bike park opened up and I thought I needed it, but now I own a 2019 norco fluid (120/130) personally I have much more fun on the short travel norco, its fun, agile, and poppy, where the enduro bike just steam rolled over all the small trail features making many tracks a bit boring, but the norco makes those small trail features actual features again, plus it can still handle everything the slash did.

@njshift

Agreed. If an upgrade is absolutely needed for Bentonville trails, Evan will see more improvement with a MegNeg added to his existing shock vs a remote reservoir style unit.
@njshift
@njshift Жыл бұрын
Increasing negative air volume on a frame with geometry designed around a progressive shock will NOT make it worse. Adding a MegNeg allows more tunability, increasing small bump sensitivity and resistance to bottoming out. If Evan decides to upgrade to the piggyback reservoir Super Deluxe Ultimate he can also use the MegNeg with that shock as well.

I got about a year out of the standard inline shock on my meta before I hit a 4' drop and exploded the internals. Plus it used to get so hot on the 5+ minute downhills. By the time you got to the bottom it would be so soft from the heat that the smallest bumps bottomed it out

A year is pretty good! What shock did you upgrade to?

Its not because its a cross-country shock its because its a bit crap, with only rebound and pressure adjustment. since you're a certified baller get your hands on a cane creek coil - and if you can afford it a manitou mezzer or intend edge for some quality suspension.

Always loved the lines on the Commencal bikes and they generally have solid build kit for the $$. Have been tempted to try one out a few times, but always end up going a different route.

I too, am amazed at how good a heavy enduro bike can climb. 12 speed, 52 tooth can climb almost anything a lighter trail bike does.

Add in a front sprocket at 28t and it's like a snails pace but super easy to climb haha

@@EvansMTBSaga Right. The senior citizen who's walking up the trail will probably pass you, but hey, you're pedaling up that hill instead of hike-a-biking! I have a 32t-52t which seems plenty easy enough, but maybe next time I'll try a 30 or 28.

That shock might be okay for some short jump trails, but on a longer tech or jump trails you are going to feel a bunch of shock faid. This is because it doesn't have a piggy back.

I have also commencal meta (tr), one of the first things i had to change is the shock (fox dps). Just not as capable as the front fork. Typical Commencal. greetings from Belgium.

230 eye to eye isn't that uncommon on Enduro bikes I've found. Typically you can destroke in 2.5mm increments from 65 down to 57.5. Standard mount I also find easier to get then trunnion mount.

@@EvansMTBSaga yes. Lots of pedaling for an enduro bike. A solid trail bike is plenty for everything there. Of course it comes in handy here and there though…

I like the RS deluxe myself. I ran it on my 2020 Stumpjumper Evo (removed the DHX) but I do noticed it overheating on 2 miles rock garden trail or trails like Downieville where its fast with chunks for 10 miles. I kept the RS Deluxe tho, because I like how they feel on the climbs, it has pedaling platform vs my DPS/DPX2/DHX. I now have Float X on a Horst Link and let me tell you, they’re as good as the RS in terms of pedaling platform but very acive suspension (like all FOX) and stays consistent on a 3 miles DH.
