Huge thanks to bluemountainmot... who look after McNutt! Off to the world famous McNutt area today to ride some rocks, rock faces and rock slabs on the Beta Crosstrainer. When it comes to epic trails, rocks, tree roots and rock faces it's hard to go past McNutt. The perfect place to work on our dirt riding technique in rocky terrain with the Beta Xtrainer. #ridingrocks #rockyterrain #Betaxtrainer

If you ride in rocks and tree roots often then a set of ultra heavy duty tubes should be your minimum, or get into the TUbliss setup or mousses for places like McNutt at Blue Mountain.
Rock slabs can be very intimidating even with a Beta Crosstrainer. These slabs have an uneven approach, they are both off camber and there's a slippery wet patch in the middle. Get as much momentum as possible on the run up, so you can coast up the rock slabs or tree roots and avoid wheelspin, even if it's a Beta Xtrainer with grippy tyres!
Stand if possible in the default position and crouch low to avoid wheelies on rock faces. Sitting makes it very easy to flip the bike and this will happen at places like McNutt at Blue Mountain.
Use throttle and clutch control to pick where to get traction and when to back off and avoid wheelspin in loose rocks and on rock faces.
Won't make it? Learn how to dismount and lay the Beta Crosstrainer down instead of that last ditch attempt with too much throttle on rock slabs or around tree roots.
Wheelie on to steeper rock faces then absorb the impact with your legs.
A good challenge is give yourself minimal run up, then get as much momentum as possible in a short distance for rock faces.
Get others to spot for you to reduce the risks when riding in rocks. And remember to jump in fast spottters, it all happens fast!
You can use kickers to hit a rock face faster, or get up a near vertical one with more safety, a handy skill at places like McNutt at Blue Mountain.
ROCK FACES
Get momentum
Stand if possible
Throttle & clutch control
Wheelie on to steep slabs
Use kickers
Try short run ups
Use spotters
Use kickers
In rocky terrain, try to stand and keep your feet on the pegs for as long as possible. Then keep standing but paddle with one leg as needed. As it gets tougher, then sit and paddle with one or both legs. Stand again as soon as you can.
This epic terrain is all in McNutt, we'll talk more about this brilliant riding area near Vancouver in the next vid. And remember watch out if you grab a sasquatch by the crotch.

I've rode a 450 4stroke for year's. in really technical trail's sometimes the weight and power really wears me out. So a couple weeks ago I purchased a Husqvarna the 150 2stroke. WOW! what a difference. I'm a tech machine on this little bike. I can ride hours longer. Friends looked at me like I was crazy when I bought it, but not anymore. They can't keep up

Watched your video about air pressure and went and road on rocky trails, you was right about the trade off. Bike didn't get a puncture or flat but it did wanna roll and buck. From there I went to back roading and the rocky gravel was sketchy in the turns. I kept hearing your video in my head telling me how to have body position etc. It all worked out just fine, but the rocky trails really gave me arm pump, and though I was squeezing the bike with my knees it was hard for me to just let the bike naturally maneuver over the rocks cause it wanted to go whare it wanted. No crashes though, and I conqured a good size hill that had been in my head for weeks. Your videos and the info you give is on point and I thank you.

Always great to know the vids are useful! We do so much slow technical riding nowadays that we all have TUbliss fitted and only run about 2 or 3 PSI. Incredible traction, great in rocks, but the handling isn't great at speed. But then we almost never pick up speed on the easy sections, we are just resting until the next snotty bit of terrain lol.

@@crosstrainingenduro yea im still getting to know the bike, I'm a short rider but I got a 23 beta 200rr and standing on the pegs riding its like the handle bars are low and to close to my body. I tried the knees bent, elbows up ass low to rear of the seat, but its like my hands gripping the bars feels like I'm top heavy, you think moving the handle bar position to #1 would feel any different?

You need more video like this in this area. This is a glimpse of all the riding around here on van island or in other parts of bc. And its knarly. When I see the training vids they dont really fully take into account that i have a steep pitch full of loose soccer ball rock.. with three crazy slabs... and that's just to access trail heads... but this video touches on the daily for me

@v4magic898

I'm sure you apply it, but perhaps haven't identified it as such. The principle is to preload the suspension on approach, apply a healthy dose of throttle to get the front end up, and then when the front wheel contacts the rock face, close the throttle completely, and let the bike tractor up the face. Timing is important, but it eliminates wheel spin on the rock. Just something I learnt in a trials course that works for me. It really is just an extension of weighting the bike before the rockface, applying throttle and deweighting and closing the throttle. This helps avoid looping out, and works well for tree roots as well.
@crosstrainingenduro

I love this terrain !! It looks like my middle France :) I agree with everything you say in all videos exept when you say " grip the bike with the knees ". In my opinion, if you do it, you lose the interest of riding stand up ( using your body to keep balance and moving it for a lot of reasons ... ) and it's still hard for your arms, i think it's better to sit down, even if it's for a short time.
@crosstrainingenduro

On terrain with rocks / boulders, I often find myself having my legs away from the frame. That way the bike gets more nimble and compliant to the terrain, and the ride gets easier, and then I retighten my knee grip when I have to force the bike over an obstacle. Also I stopped being too experimental, because rocks like to damage bikes and bodies in an unexpected way.
@crosstrainingenduro

do you know anyone who rides or have you rode the new yz250x? this is pretty similar terrain as to what I'm usually riding and I'm trying to figure out if the beta 300rr is worth the extra $3,000 vs the yz250x
