I'm new to listening to these 2 but wow, what a bloody down to earth commonsense look at still keeping it relevant and competitive while keeping the costs down. And on the subject of engine rebuilds and their costs I can tell you from first hand knowledge that when cranky Franky ran the jps team with the 635's then the M3's those engines were rebuilt after every race as were the gearboxes and diffs.

Remember when everyone bagged Group A? If you go back and watch it now it's very interesting. Watching a good mix of relatively lightly modified cars that you can buy from a dealer. Now that Australia no longer has local car manufacturers to support,Group A type racing is very appealing. Supercars are not a representation of any car I could buy.

Larry Perkins summed those days up pretty well, I can't quote him, but may be nice for the fans but it was crap for the teams and drivers if you didn't have the right gear, made it hard to attract decent sponsors and keep teams afloat. Not to mention the politics.

Yes, it's an amalgam of cost cutting points from other episodes, but worth watching. I also like the fact that it gets the punters out there, like Toothless and Chuck Meister and Nick J, contributing diverse and very valid opinions on your "common sense" approach to keeping the "factory car racing" sport, as it has evolved and we now know it, alive. There are a few of things that are indisputable - 1. Commonsense is not that common 2. You can't please everyone 3. By containing cost, whilst maintaining the ability for teams to put on a good show/race, everyone will benefit by having more participants, sponsors and punters Finally, keep it up guys. This channel has become one of my, if not THE, favourite(s).

I am a fan of motor sport. Supercars in particular but not exclusively. I am a fan of some drivers but also a manufacturer (which is important). The one thing that worries me is generic boredom where everything is the same and the races provide no action. No passing. It just turns into a slip streaming race. Factories and investors need some wiggle room in the technology side of the investment to encourage the sport to move forward and not just turn into a stale bottle of piss in 10 years time. Maybe allow developers to rotate every year...tyres one year is open, shocks the next , engine after etc.

Agree with the crate engine solution but must still be a GM / FORD motor people are not as interested in seeing an LS ( and that would be the motor selected ) in a Mustang . I remember a Konika Mitsubishi Magna using the 308 holden engine used to race until it won a race or 2 and got banned .

Hey lads, Let's say supercars set up a car with all the parts you are talking about. Do you think the lap time performance would be affected? I agree bringing costs down is a great idea but I would hate to see the lap times become slower especially at places like Bathurst. Also if you could do a segment on time attack racing in Australia that would be awesome to watch as there is alot of cool stuff happening. Cheers gents keep up the great videos

The takeaway form this is that it is NOT the cost of the parts that is the real problem, it's the cost of the constant development is where the majority of dollars goes. The down side to locking all parts/components down is do we really want v8's to be essentially the same as the formula Ford etc.

This won't happen to teams have no say in the hardware used on the car unless they find a safely issue with the parts stated here. Plus then the development of all set parts are done by super car itself an teams have no say with any development apart from there reports of weak area's of those set parts. Engine wise i think you guy's nailed it as most manufacturers have a crate engine ford/GM/Dodge an the list goes on. I wan't to see braking to be controlled as well as then teams will have to manage there brakes within a race an it's another area where everyone on par with each other. I have so much more in mind but don't want to write a novel in doing so. Very nice points guy's an thank for the recap.... (Edit) The Big question is when super cars going electric as they must be thinking about as it's the future tech in motoring . Oh shit I said it. Lol

No fly by wire and Ford and GM have such fantastic road car engines available as crates as they discussed here. This and the reliance on street races, together with contrived team tactics at this years Bathurst has lost me after 47 years as a fan.

Where I can go down to my local Repco and buy the same parts and put them in my not to out of reach priced family car, not all of us want to own or drive SUVs and dual cab utes......and make it accessible......free to air TV so i can sit down with my kids on a Sunday arvo like me and my did and watch motor racing. just think about how much Kelly Racing have spent developing the engines for the Nissan? then how much in engines they have to replace for 2020? They have run four cars in super cars plus Super 2s? Thing about staying with the old engines is the teams already have 8-10 engines so the going to a new engine means up front costs but with cheaper maintenance and rebuilds for the future. As the boys said they sell off their old shit to the other teams.

I think this category has lost its original essence and attraction to spectators. May as well be watching sprint karting. Having diversity in the cars with pros and cons makes for exciting racing. e.g. Falcon with 351 vs lighter Torana with 308. Obviously with more modern cars. Maybe 5L coyote vs 6L LS and make them both run H pat.

Love the show, but if I can be critical, why are you guys so hell bent on telling us whats "wrong" with Supercars? Apart from saving a little money, too many control items is a stupid idea. Supercars teams employ engineers, and designers, that want to innovate, and be better than the guys at the other end of pit lane. Your proposals would stifle their development, and cause a talent drain into other categories. If teams cannot afford to go motor racing, go elsewhere. We should not be dragging the "bad teams" up, by making the top teams slower. It should be the other way around. Be careful what you wish for.

Nick, I see where you're coming from but the spiralling costs aren't sustainable. I thought their explanations on how and why money could be saved without sacrificing good racing were quite valid. Also, I beg to differ on your definition of "a little money". I'm an engineer and I love to see all those beautifully designed and made and functional parts but I love to see "door handle to door handle" just as much, if not more. Helping teams cut costs, which may well, and should, increase the number of cars on the grids, and making sure that the drivers can "rub door handles", can't be bad for the sport, can it? I agree with you 100% on the "We should not be dragging the "bad teams" up, by making the top teams slower.", but I also want to see more racing based less on who has the biggest bucket of money. Maybe I'm living in "cuckoo land" but I'd like to think that containing costs should/could be done without completely stifling innovation and development. You may well be right, but I hope not.
@fr8boy
@fr8boy 5 жыл бұрын
Cutting costs will help smaller teams compete with the likes of FPR, DJRTP, T8 & WAU, If the components on cars such as the uprights are a standard piece, that like that MARC car upright set, swappable from front to back/ left to right and the same for everyone, it means that a small team like MSR don't have to go to the likes of T8 or DJRTP and spend $50k+ on a set of front uprights & control arms and get 1 or 2 generation old items that are still not going to make them competitive. Same for motors, make everyone run a factory based crate motor that has market relevance, but also more modern, reliable and cheaper to run and maintain, means those smaller teams are not engaged in as The dude calls it 'the arms race' on engines, an arms race on suspension things that are 'free'; and taking up hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in R&D. That little segement saved between the chassis, suspension, and engines, close to a million bucks a year per car, that will make racing more open to others and because of the market relevance with more OEM parts involved, maybe create more interest in the category from manufacturers. Hell if the Chassis wasn't so rigid and things like the cage were a little more free then maybe we would see the likes of Nissan staying in to race a GTR that looks like a proper GTR, maybe the likes of BMW, or Jag or other manufacturers who have great looking road cars would be able to get involved and have a car that properly looks like a race going version of the road car and not a stretched and pulled cartoon like the Mustang is.
