The drama tells the life of Xiao Yanyan, who was the most powerful woman of the Liao dynasty. Xiao Yanyan and Han Derang were childhood sweethearts, but were separated when she was sent into the palace to become the consort of Yelü Xian. Though Xiao Yanyan and Yelu Xian's marriage was not one built on romance, Xiao Yanyan fulfills her job as a dedicated empress, and gains her husband's respect after the policies she instated proved her capability. On another note, I'm glad that the Emperor, in the end, never forgot that Yanyan and Derang were still in love with each other and confessed that he forced Yanyan to stay by his side and finally let YanYan follow her heart and bring them both together. I love the last scene where Derang arrived like a knight to save his queen and his love and the relieved face of the little emperor ... I wonder what will happen to the concubine and her son. I think maybe Yanyan will adopt him ... Derang's father who dies at the same time as the Emperror is fate, he was faithful to the emperor to the end just like his son.😢💖

His betrayal started before he even gained the throne; as soon as Mingyi approached Yanyan's father the first time, to talk about her marrying him; that was when he betrayed both Han Derang & Yanyan. Then Mingyi tries to make Han Derang feel guilty for not wanting to stay & support him after the betrayal. And he expects Yanyan to give him her heart, when he completely betrayed their friendship. He may have been a wise ruler, but he was a horribly selfish and untrustworthy person. That's why I'm glad that Yanyan never gave him her heart; only her body & brain! He didn't deserve her heart and he knew that!

I don't know why but Xiyin and his sons death still made me sad Xiyin was a power grabbing shit but no parent should have to see their child die. It's so frustrating to feel this way cause I've hated him in this series. Even more sad was Wuguli was to passive and lost in her love for her husband to do anything to stop him. They were doomed from the start.

That’s the funny thing about forgiveness...although it is really a gift for the other person, the person that forgives is given a gift as well. One of those gifts include healing. Anger, bitterness and hate cause ulcers, high blood pressure and even strokes. Forgiveness gives life and peace. Forgiveness releases the control on you that the person who needs forgiveness has on you. In other words when you don’t forgive, you are the one who is miserable. The person who caused the harm is living life and not even thinking about you. Forgiveness is a gift, it just depends on what you do with it. For Derang and Yanyan...they can go on and live a loving, fruitful life and raise those children to be productive members of that dynasty. Millions of people reap the benefits:-)
