Somethings to note 1. This event occurs during the 6th light novel and in the middle of the Seishun Buta Yaro movie. In fact, you can watch both this and the movie in tandem if you really wanted to. This of course means spoilers to beware. 2. I noted this in the translations but just to reiterate, "Shoko-chan" and "Makinohara-san" refers to the younger Shoko while "Shoko-san" is the older one. 3. And on the topic of dual identities, the Kaede in this drama CD is the original Kaede with her memories back, NOT the panda Kaede that you mostly see in the anime.

From what I've been told by people who live there, Japanese culture puts a lot of emphasis on modesty and chasteness in relationships, especially teenage ones (sometimes into very early 20s). When they shared a bed in episode 2, Mai and Sakuta weren't dating (and aside from a few teasing quips, neither really had any intention of doing so at the time either). They were just two acquaintances (I like to think friends by that point) stuck in an inconvenient place together. Now that they're dating (and had been for a while, and _really_ love each other), the implications of sharing a bed have a lot more weight socially...which _does_ make their reactions kind of strange still, because the whole show has been about going against the flow of Japanese society... I really don't know, but it was a cute back-and-forth regardless haha

1) Tsundere ladies don't openly admit their intimacy levels; Mai is going to deny telling Shoko her sleeping arrangements in case it exposes how "intimate" they are and Sakuta is not risking the wrath of Mai due to Shoko adding she could 1 up Mai. 2) Both Mai and Sakuta feel like there's nothing to prove with Shoko's teasing and also Kaede is going to have a freaking shock when she wakes up her big brother and spots another woman with him. 3) Although it doesn't seem it, they are in the early stages of their teen relationship getting serious. The best way to describe it is when, in the West, your partner leaves a toothbrush in your bathroom. In Japan, it's the other having a spare key to your home. (Mai gave him a key to her place during the Nodoka arc and he gives her a key in Shoko's arc - above). Sleeping in the same bed as tantamount to a wedding band which is probably a bit too serious for both of them at the mo. 4) As per Oriental culture, I don't think they would sleep in each other's beds when they haven't met other family members first. Nodoka and Kaede don't count and Mai definitely won't because Nodoka or her mother or Mai's agency would throw a fit and probably make parents on both sides think a shotgun wedding is coming.
