I live in Germany near the Green Hell so comparing anything that drives here to 95% of the cars in the 🦅 is just pointless. The brakes / the cooling / the suspension .... Hell the entire car is most of the time absolutely not build for anything we would use it here. That's not negativ... Just plain difference in the whole road system here compared to the 🦅. The average high powered car you'd buy in the 🦅 would be helpless on a normal country road here compared to a car half the power from here. Only car that comes to mind that has some usable suspension / brakes and weight would be a Corvette of the newer generations.

It doesn't suck!! Its a beautiful engine haha. I'm always impressed by the effort people will put into tuning them as well when you could just put a bigger engine in. But honestly i do like them. But I'm a 80s/90s corolla guy and they come with them.

The whole "put a bigger engine in" isn't the answer when your car already has perfect balance with the four cylinder. Putting a bigger, and heavier, engine in ruins that. I have a Fiero track car that has had 7 different power plants over the years. The worst combo was the supercharged 3800. And the by far fastest has been an iron Duke 4 cylinder with a LS head. Bigger is almost never better in a sports car.

4AGE is antiquated, but is truly a sleeper engine. My friend used to have an HKS Twincharged AW11 back in the late 80's early 90's.... He was beating a lot of cars back then during the street racing scene here in Southern California. He was able to beat rotaries, V8's, turbo cars, and he was also able to beat a modified street bike that gave him 10 car fly by start. I myself had an AE86 with a 4AGZE and I gave a lot of more modern cars a run for there money. Point being, any motor has potential, it just depends how deep your pockets are. You can tune 4K, 3T, 18RG, 2TG, 3TGTE, 3SG engines and can get amazing power out of these motors. It just depends on your pockets. Also you have to consider the application. What are you using and tuning the engine for? Probably the most practical 4 cylinder Toyota engine to use or tune right now is probably the 3SG Beams 😀

I went on a track day at BRC with my 1NZ Vios and chased a Corolla Big Body with a 4A-GE swap, and I'd say that that thing is closer to or faster than my car in the straights. So I wouldn't necessarily say the 1NZ is much faster, that's just my experience though.
@kuholgarage
@kuholgarage 2 жыл бұрын
If you say that your Vios can keep up with a 4AGE on the straights, still proves that the 1NZ economy engine is as good as the older performance engine. And the lighter front end of your Vios allows you to catch up on the corners. Plus your engine is easier and cheaper to maintain. So 1NZ > 4AGE?

it's old, not obsolete. name me another engine other than the K20 you can rev up to 11.000rpg with a few mods, and sound ungodly good for a 4 banger, especially with ITB. also, it's a old school toyota engine, meaning it's pretty much more bullet proof than a tank.

It's certainly a dated engine but it's still a solid option if it's going in a light car. I'm planning on buying a Toyota fx16 Corolla hatchback with a 4age. The car weighs about 1900 lbs so 120hp should be more than enough to feel fast especially with that cars short gearing. Not to mention you really can't beat the sound in my opinion. Also the 1st Gen MR2 had a supercharged 4age so I wouldn't be surprised if you can Frankenstein something together relatively easily. All this being said, if you're putting it in a heavier car or want an easier build, look up the 3sge beams motor. It's another unit of an engine, inspired by the 4age from Toyota. Other than that you can always go K series 😂

I sort of like these..have one in a 4wd tercel, just assembled one for an aw11..but what does he mean about the sound? It sounds like a small, flat plane crank inline four, with a 1-3-4-2 firing order, which describes most of them...give any 16v one similar compression and cam timing, and it will sound the same...those things determine Sound, not the brand name or some magic. Sound wise, I'll take a v8 or inline six any day, or a cross plane R1..but it's just a matter of taste..

Literally the most reliable drift engine in history. Balance a stock rotating assembly to .005 grams assembled or better, high comp pistons(nothing over 11.3:1) and like 5k in head porting and oversized valves and a pair of hks hog ass cams. Making right around the 170 mark with stock ported intake manifold I run limiter the entire track day. 15k miles at minimum of limiter bashing while drifting and it's lasted longer than any actually built engine I've had or seen. Only issue it has right now is corrosion on external aluminum because car sat outside for a winter and engine bay needs a polishing😅

4age 16v second gen was basically a hi comp 4agze (big cast steel crank and decent rods) good for about 300hp with no internal mods, with pistons, rods and an MLS head gasket standard crank will hold 5-600hp. I been running mine now for about 20 years with about 350 crank hp engine still healthy with 135psi comp (8:1 static compression) across all cylinders running 20+ psi boost it has been tracked and run the 1/4 in low 13s at 109 mph so yeah I have to disagree it's an awesome motor now the owner of the GR corolla as well I hope this 1.6l can also stand the test of time 😁

you're thinking like an engineer, but not like an engine builder. The all aluminum and plastic valve cover and intake runners on that modern engine are only "cool" comparing stock to stock. Iron blocks are stronger (even with the "weakened" design) and ultimately, if you have all of your parts made of metal and your wear parts rubber, you can stand the test of time. when those newer engines (and ALL new engines today) become 50 years old, they will be impossible to service because entire chunks of the engine will not exist, as the plastic will crumble away. So the performance aspect cannot be the only metric you use to measure how good an engine actually is.
@kuholgarage
@kuholgarage 6 ай бұрын
The 4AGE has plastic timing belt covers that are still prone to what you say, and may or may not already be discontinued (dunno have to check). Really depends on your metrics and what weights you put on your metrics for you to determine what is best. As long as one can easily get parts for one's engine, that's all that matters. Plus plastic (and metal) parts can be remade via 3D printing if necessary. Thanks for the comment.
@twrcrew8852
@twrcrew8852 6 ай бұрын
@@kuholgarage timing belt covers are not necessary for operation. and yes there's many clear plastic aftermarket ones. The plot hole in 3D printing is needing an original to draw out your measurements from. if hypothetically they're all gone, that will be impossible.

The twin cam 4AGE is basically a road going, mass produced version of the Ford Cosworth BDA twin cam racing engine.
