Pete's Videos are second to none. You won't find a better instructor anywhere online. As a former engine builder recently back in the game after decades of being away from it I have watched many engine builders over the last few years, and Pete's videos, the explanations, the details are incredibly accurate and easy to follow. If I was to suggest one out of all the guys and Gals making engine tutorials, engine building techniques, engine information, parts selection, and hows and whys, IT WOULD BE PETE'S GARAGE VIDEOS BY A LONG SHOT. IT JUST DOESN'T GET BETTER. THANKS, PETE.

Cheers Pete! Can't thank you enough for your engine building series. Such a remarkable resource. With NO prior automotive experience ( save for that one time I did manage an oil change) I used your videos and a '76 jeep shop manual to rebuild an old amc 232 from the block up. Tremendous fun! and testament to the wealth of information in your videos. I recommend these videos to ANYONE even remotely interested in cars/engines.

Pete, Thanks so much for information for a proper engine build. I have loved the automobile and have built many V-8 engines from all the American manufacturers. I am not a professional mechanic, just someone who loves a strong engine and a clean classy car. Your videos are the first I have seen that are correct, Many on youtube are absolutely wrong and sadly can make novice engine builders do the wrong thing. Cleanliness is next to godliness in engine building. Many engines I have repaired were dirty and I am so glad you stressed the importance of keeping the engine and work surfaces clean! And stressing the points of gauging all critical clearances. To do it wrong means you get to do it again as the engine will come apart Keep up the videos, great job Gary

This is a controversial question. I have done tests on this subject and yes, the rings will move slightly during break-in. Once the rings seat in the cylinder they will stay in place for many years. The location of the gaps is important to make sure the compression is kept until the rings seat, so always follow the manufacturers recommendations.

I've caught a couple of your videos and I'm at the point of installing m up bottom end. I've been around engine building for many years but this is my first time doing all of it myself. Not too bright lol. I never knew how much was behind the actual building and not the assembly. I've assembled a few over the years just helping mostly but just tightening whatever spec was. It's really been a crash course in every math class I've ever been in. Geometry trig calculous you name it. Enough said I really enjoy how well you explain what you're doing. Also my hats off to you for showing things like that ring slipping out when putting the piston in the bore that's gonna be the part for me to slow down. But seeing that mistakes do happen even for experienced builders like yourself helps me to know that anything can happen when installing everything for real n not just mockup. Anyway keep the videos coming thanks for your time. I'm doing a 406 gen 1 sbc forged bottom end deciding on heads now but it should be a powerhouse. Going in a 1988 Ford ranger lol. 8.8 410 already in with 4 link. Coilovers all around I can't wait. Anyway I'm rambling working late every night here lately trying to get this engine ready to fire up. Have a good day. Todd

A forged piston is more ductile than a cast piston. Cast pistons are more brittle and tend to suffer from micro cracks. Once a crack is initiated its only a matter of time until a catastrophic failure in a motor making any kind of power. Forged materials have a more uniform density and grain structure throughout. Cracks usually don't spread as easily in low silicon metal and usually forged pistons in my experience melt, break around the pin holes or become pitted on the edges from high combustion temps or detonation.
@PetesGarage

+J Lang I agree 100%. The eutectic pistons throw people of thinking they'll get more out of them but they get brittle faster

may I just add when using a piston ring clamp it should be oiled first to aid installation second when you clamp the piston and are ready to install, put the clamped assembly in the bore and gently tap the clamp flush to the block this will guarantee the rings won't pop out from underneath. I used to practice on scrap engines when I was an apprentice and have never broken a ring during installation. 😇

i want to thank you alot for all the time and the methodical nature of all you fn awesome videos, going to the basement and the garage to round up those pesky paper towels and give em to my mom to put in her kitchen. im currently building a giant single cylinder kawasaki motor (718cc's) as you can imagine one cylinder that size requires some stupid counterbalancing to make the ride even semi smooth, the gist is im replacing every single bushing (6) and ball bearings(10) that reside inside the crankcase, new crank and associated bearings, stage two cams,springs, valves and lifters and finally that giant forged ceramic coated piston, machine work and gasket set (no labor im doing all the scut work) im droppping close to 2500 bucks on a one cylinder pretty high horse motor....screw that v8!im backing up and resanitizing my work space with particular attention to dust, and anything remotely airborrne, even thought about washing my hands

Pete - I don't wish to correct you before your entire youtube audience, but the 2 connecting rods you displayed in this video are both "I-beam" section rods. Yes, one of them is considerably heftier than the other, but they are both I-beam rods. A true H-beam rod has the groove running along the narrow side of the rod and the flat running along the wider side. If another commenter has already pointed this out, then I apologize for the redundancy. Otherwise, this and your other videos that I've viewed thus far are spot-on and very informative.

Don't blame you. Your series is great and I've picked up a tip or 2 myself. I also noted that you installed the piston/rod ass'y with the cylinder @ 45 degrees from the vertical. Wouldn't rotating the block so that the cylinder is vertical lessen the chance of nicking a cylinder wall, or worse yet a rod journal?

Hey there Pete! Fantastic series of videos for sure. You are a very knowledgeable technician and not a mere parts changer no doubt. Keep up the valuable service you're doing here on the tube. By the way, Molybdenum is pronounced this way- moleeb denum, like denum jeans. For whatever it's worth. Looking forward to more videos.

Wow Pete!!! I'm amazed at all the information I've been hearing throughout this build up! I'm about to rebuild a 318 from my 65 Sport Fury, and I can tell this buildup is going to help. I realize this is for a Ford, but essentially the same. I actually just purchased a "How to Rebuild the Small-Block Mopar" book to assist in the rebuild. I've seriously been looking for over a week for a simple step-by-step tutorial on the basic build-up of a motor, and I found it in this series. Thanks Pete!!

Petes Garage most videos just miss out a whole aspect of a particular job but you covered everything nicely and wrapped it all up in a watchable way that anybody could learn from. I'm mid rebuild at the moment for someone else and everything's going pretty well, diesel tho so everything's black and tarry.

GREAT VIDEO! Thank you so much for putting together such informative How to video's! This was exactly what I have been looking for. I am just getting started with an engine build for my 1998 SVT Cobra. I've had a Vortech S/C on it since December 1998, and an air to water after cooler followed soon after. The main reason for my build is to replace the stock rods and pistons with after market forged replacements. I've kept the mileage low (about 25k on the odometer) so hopefully the heads won't require any major work other than port matching and a good cleaning. I was also going to take the opportunity to install billet oil pump gears and trigger wheel and perform the cooling mod to the drivers side head. And also improve fueling with new larger fuel lines, billet fuel rails, fuel pump hat with 2 new larger fuel pumps and replace the stock fuel tank with a Glenn's Performance 03/04 Cobra fuel tank.
