you can tell he lives in a desert, because all he's concerned about is not overheating, over here we got winters you know and sometimes guys (usually old ones though) will block air passage to the rad so that the engine warms up faster

Cardboard in the truck grill, lol. I've done that before on old POS that didn't have a t-stat in them in the winter.

On an old suzuki car it ran so cold in the winter the gauge never got past 1/4 and it blew only mediocre heat. The engine just never seemed to get hot. Even after the thermostat was changed it still ran cold. The only thing that would get it to heat up to almost 1/2 way was some cardboard covering up the radiator.
@nathanantilla5713

I'm not old and I do exactly that. Before I converted to electric fans and blocked the grille, you could watch the coolant temp drop anytime i took off from a stop. Additionally, blocking the grille actually helps aerodynamics too, improving fuel economy. Diesels benefit most from a grille block, but if you have a gasser with a big radiator (most trucks), you can save a lot of money on fuel by blocking the grille.

Steve's eFans are nice, I'd like to see the comparison between a really nice PWM controlled eFan setup and a factory clutch fan setup. I'm betting that at highway speeds both would be OK, but in traffic on a hot day? The eFan has to be the winner.

I remember several times (years ago) of slipping into neutral in traffic, and revving the engine about 1K rpms more to bring down the temp using mechanical fans. What a long way we've come with shrouds and dual electric fans and more efficient radiators. This is a case were bigger truly is better.

When you said that more CFM for your fan is always better, aren't there 2 types of fans, static pressure fans and high airflow fans? Or are radiator fans always static pressure? As far as I know, static pressure fans work best when in a high-resistance application, such as forcing air through a radiator, whereas high airflow fans push the maximum amount of air through a low resistance area.

Factory Cooling systems are inadequate for continuous full power cooling. As in any large truck of over 1ton capacity you will see a huge radiator for 250hp engine as it has to dissipate the waste heat of an engine producing 250hp continuously,as an example. Whenver you build a high horsepower engine just get the largest radiator you can fit and you stand a chance it will not boilover.

Blegh, I hate vehicles that overheat when they idle. I used to have a VP Commodore that did the same thing if it sat for longer than a few minuets, the temp needle would start to rise and that familiar feeling of anxiety would start up "Ooooh shit, this traffic better get a move on soon. I dunno what to do if she get's too hot." Not only that but my Commo also had an issue where the crank position sensor or some shit would come loose and the car wouldn't want to start, so I couldn't shut her down during the wait without risking her not wanting to start again. XD

Bigger is not always better in radiators. Factory the thicker radiators were for A/C cars driven in traffic. Combined with large efficient fans. And those radiators are not very effective at high speed as they hinder the air, as do the fans. Which start to impede airflow at about 40k. Look at modern OEM radiators, usually under 30mm thick with for traffic usually very efficient fans, most these days electric. Though big clutch fans are equally efficient. I use modern style thin alloy radiators. More efficient and far lighter. Though have about a 4 year life!

with radiator fans what you really need to look for is not airflow but static pressure, you can have stupidly high CFM fans that have terrible static pressure that in turn will do a shit job at cooling off your radiator because there is not enough pressure to push the hot air out of the rad.
@impalaSS65
@impalaSS65 7 жыл бұрын

Unless you're building something really crazy, your rad fan should be pulling, not pushing. Maybe your fans have been doing a shit job because you're trying to push air out the front of the vehicle, against the wind?

voltage drop testing electric fans is easy.. hand held digital volt meter set to 20 volts DC.. one probe on the positive battery. the other probe on the positive wire as close to the fan motor as you can get. turn the fan on. i would love to see less than 0.5 or half a volt of drop.. more than that and you are going to have reduction in fan speed and fan horsepower.. do the same test with the volt meter lead on the negative battery post and the negative wire to the fan with the fans running.. again less than 0.5 or half a volt of drop would be great.. could you have slightly greater voltage drop to the fans.. yep.. you do want to keep it as low as possible. so the fans spin as fast as possible. hope this helps a few of you.. too thin wires supplying the fan motors burn up more fan motors drawing more current at reduced voltages. .. they also burn up more Engines because of fan failure causing overheating .. this test only takes a few minutes to perform.. how long did it take to prepare and assemble your engine..

Bigger is better, thicker is not. If your worried about overheating when stuck in traffic, a large thin radiator will flow more air with the fans than a slightly smaller rad of twice the thickness, even though the thicker rad will have much more surface area and rated capacity. Where thick rads make sense is when you are traveling at high speed and cannot conveniently fit more height or width, or if you have some truly crazy fans that can handle the backpressure.
@jdmeaux

Lots of people never realize what a good radiator and fan will do to help an engine. I replaced to stock radiator and fans in my wife's Elantra last year with an aluminum radiator and larger fans. It gets up to temp properly and doesn't overheat in stop-and-go traffic. And the A/C cools better. I guess its from all that air moving through the condenser and radiator. It does get noisier with the fans on at full tilt, but its cooler. JD

i wonder, isnt copper a better heat conductor, material?! a copper radiator would be smaller, about the same weight , and stronger(puncture wise)
@drbelli
@drbelli 7 жыл бұрын
i guess the technology of aluminium tubing and shaping made copper irrelevant then... (for the industry), thx for the full formed explanation you gave . btw, i got a performance radiator some time ago, and the inner tubes were all round, not oval. i reckon oval shaped tubes are more effective, coz air travels inna linear fashion, and thus round tubes would be hotter in the upper walls...
