Thanks for your video. It helped me fix an intermittent starting problem on my 96 Ranger. After watching your video I thought about the symptoms I was having. I wasn't having problems running once the engine started. It was just an intermittent crank but no start. I thought that it probably wasn't the collision relay because if that was causing the problem I would also have problems running. Also, if it was some kind of wiring issue, I would also have trouble running. So I came to the conclusion that it was the fuel pump relay because when I shut the engine down, the relay loses power and the armature of the relay must be sticking when I have the intermittent starting issue. I verified this by having someone try to start the truck and when it was having the problem I tapped on the relay with a screwdriver to free the armature and it started right up.

Nice diagnostics there Charles, glad the video was helpful to you. Over time the contacts in the relay can get weak and lazy. Sometimes they can if get stuck in the on position. Fortunately it's not to often. Take care and thanks for the comment! -Ozz

86 Ford Ranger 2.9L 2wd Manual. Pressure washed engine, truck ran for 30 minutes, shut off and two days later; Crank won't start checked and cleaned contacts, checked for continuity and traced to fuel relay, fuel relay was, missing voltage on control ground side side. Grounded fuel pump relay at VIP terminal and fuel pump engaged, a little intermittent, may be corrosion on contacts. Runs with starter fluid, 40psi fuel pressure all relays work, inertia works. Opened harness near relays found bare factory splice, not soldered but pressed, cleaned it and truck ran but then 10 min later died, cleaned splice and truck ran, taped splice and moved the harness truck died. Moved harness playing with splice and truck ran. Will spend next day soldering splice and cleaning all contacts, May post video of bad splice as well as well additional probing for voltage in vicinity.

@@ozzstars_cars Looked at the one today, (inertia switch) the condition was proper trigger to OPEN and the reading was infinite impedance , then in closed position, the reading wanders all over the place in its impedance just like your did. I figured it cannot possibly produce steady 12v to the pump like this. Any recommendation source for these? Had another person call a few part stores and range price was $45~105! Still had no pump on - energized issue. Traced the 4 wire plug at pump connection above tank RED =12V, Black = ground. So I think pump is faulty. I looked for a secondary high pressure fuel pump on the frame rails. and did not see one in line like your example. Just a fuel filter, nothing else. Next step is to drop tank and check pump when in hand. I could not hear or feel it operating at all, should be able to feel a some motor action yet it was silent. Even jumped the switch to eliminate possibility it's affecting issue and no joy there either. . I believe I have a compound problem, possibly inertia SWT flakey and Pump went bad. Initial issue was, truck ran fine day before, went to start it in the morning, engine cranked and would not fire up. This video gave me a great head start for points to look at.
@ozzstars_cars Жыл бұрын
@ashqelon7267 before anything else did you verify fuel pressure at the rail? What was the pressure? Will the engine start and run on starting fluid to verify its a fuel problem?
@ashqelon7267 Жыл бұрын
@@ozzstars_cars I did not use a gauge to verify pressure as didn't really even think of that. I feel that would have been a deeper troubleshooting if needed could have, yet so let that step alone . Yes it did start for a few seconds 3-5 with ether, until it was consumed, so I was confident Electrical was not part of the problem.

@ozzstars_cars7 жыл бұрын
Power and ground on the power side? Do you mean the load side. Have you tested the relay and what were the results? Then have you checked powers and grounds at the EEC relay? Is the EEC relay working properly? Was a helper cycling the ignition on and off when you did the testing like you see me doing in the video? The EEC resets for after a two second prime and the key will need to be cycled to test properly, NO power then there is a short or a blown fuse :-)

You calm manner and locating the primary culprit , was fascinating. I have a 2003 Ford Ranger 6cyl 4wd which sat idle and i had to replace a battery ( 4years old Battery). I found relays on driver side, they are similar to yours but different. I have light and a meter. I believe I might need some guidance. Cannot find booster fuel pump or it's switch. under car driver side. Inertia switch in foot well side has 2, 2 color wires going into the switch which has 3 points of contact. I tested the switch with ohm meter and got 0.0 on two contact side with wires. I am unable to get voltage on meter on two contact side. Inertia switch works when I bang the switch hard as I get what appears to be 0.1. I pushed switch down returned 0.0. I think I just need slight guidance or suggestions to follow this up. I would really like to fix this myself if I possibly can. Thank you!

It was the F'ing Fuel Pump Inertia "collision" switch mounted on the passenger side inside the firewall. No truck impacts, no bumps, no anything that should have tripped that Inertia "collision" switch!! Fuel pump is fine! Beware Boys, ALWAYS ALWAYS check that damn Inertia "collision" switch FIRST on ANY Ranger or Mazda B-Series!! A kick of a foot, a package you have on the floor bumping it, could easily trip it! Hi great video. Helped a lot but got stuck when testing jumped inertia switch with test light to positive terminal. No power. Any guidance on next steps? Thanks, Jeff N
@ozzstars_cars Жыл бұрын
Test light should be hooked to ground so you can test for power with the ignition on, the the light should glow if the circuit is completed to the fuel pump. If not, then time to diagnose the problem.

I've got a 1997 Ford Ranger. Starts up great when cold. After I drive it 3-4 miles the truck will not restart until I let it sit for 15-20 minutes. During the period it will not restart the engine seems flooded and there is a distinct gas smell. Any ideas as to what mechanical component may be failing?

@@ozzstars_cars Thanks. Got spark when the engine was cold, but not when it warmed up. Turned out to be an ICM ground wire that was connected but also corroded. Cleaned the corrosion off and so far so good..

My 2002 Ranger does this, but intermittently. I can be driving, go to the store, come back out and it won’t start. It cranks but won’t start. Give it some time or overnight and it’ll start. It seems random. I wonder if it could be that inertia switch.
@ozzstars_cars5 жыл бұрын
Check for codes. Crank signal or fuel pump/pressure issues.

All I can say is I wish you were my neighbor. I have a 2002 Ranger that is acting almost like this one. It will start for 10-15 times and then it won't start at all. If I wait 10 minutes after several tries to start it low and be hold it starts right up and runs normal. Think it might be the same issue as your video? Thanks for the post.
@ozzstars_cars6 жыл бұрын
Doesn't sound like the same issue. Hard to diagnose online but I would start by hooking up a scan tool and checking data.
@daviddarrow45066 жыл бұрын
@@ozzstars_cars A scan tool from my local parts store did a scan with no codes. Like I said, the issue is intermittent, which is sometimes worse to figure out. The next time it fails I'm going to try spraying some starter fluid in the hose that connects to the air filter like you did. My engine is fuel injected. Maybe I can narrow it down to a fuel problem by doing that test. If it still doesn't run then it has to be electric of some sort. I'm open to anything you might suggest. Thanks for your reply.

When was the throttle body last cleaned? Have you tried unplugging the MAF sensor to see if it runs better? Without the proper equipment it is hard to diagnose a problem, especially over the internet, if you know what I mean?

Hey I have a question. I have a 2003 Ford Lincoln. I bypassed the fuel pump and the fuel pump works. The inertia switch is good. The truck cranks but no start. When I put the key to on position, I get a temperature light on the dashboard. What could be causing my truck not to run? Thank you.

It's impossible to diagnose something like that over the internet. Only Scotty the hack can tell you. lol
