The engine could not be rotated by hand and looked like it was seized engine (bad engine) but ended up being a seized alternator.
For more information on this topic, I have written a “field manual” called Engine Performance Diagnostics which is available at www.scannerdanner.com as an eBook or paper book.

Thanks for posting this video. On my 2006 GP I had the exact same issue - car would try to start and just wouldn't budge. I replaced my 8 year old battery, starter, ignition switch.......all to no avail......until I finally found your video. Took the belt off, car started right up. New alternator installed, good to go. Thanks a bunch. I'm sure I'm not the only person to benefit from this knowledge. Thank you again for sharing.

The reason my alternator seized was because I hit the mother of all potholes on shocks that were already on the brink.....at 80K on a 2006......and it cause a catastrophic failure to the metal housing of the alternator (and I'm sure the interior as well). New shocks all around and now I'm golden.

thinks, this was great to watch. i've been in this trade for about 13 years now, and can honestly say it would have taken me a little longer to work out it was a seized alternator. i would have expected to see a badly damaged belt to give it away for a start. thanks again, this gives me another tool to use in the shop

Funny thing, Today a costumer walked over to the shop and said he needed a tow " My engine is making a lot of noise and now I cant start it and cranks slow."(Chevy Truck) So I drove over with a Battery jump pack and the Costumer. With the jumper it still cranks slow, after watching the Mini Cooper video yesterday at lunch I remembered to watch the pulleys during cranking and guess what yea the alternator was frozen, So I cut the belt off and the truck started right up. The costumer was happy not to pay for a Tow. I Love the Videos, So Helpful.

This don't make no sense dude. If you had to jump the battery but you cut the belt off. Then without the belt the alternator won't charge the battery and the battery will die right away again. Where is ur brain dude

Paul, Yet another great case study video in your series. I would have never guessed a seized alternator could have been the cause of the engine drag. That goes to show how tough those serpentine belts really are. Would have expected the belt to snap. first or the starter motor to have burned up (again???) Good job; and keep these case studies coming. Tom

Can’t thank you enough for posting this. I have limited repair knowledge and this helped me realize why my Mini Cooper that sat for 2 years was barely cranking after putting in a new battery. Was about to replace starter before o saw this and found out my alternator was seized. Interestingly the alternator pulley would only spin backwards. Great video.

Thank you for posting this video. I have a 2006 Mini Cooper S GP with 88K and initially I thought I drained the battery. It was manufactured in 2010 so I figured 8 years old it was due. Changed to an Optima Red Top 34R and still wouldn't start. Bought a starter, still wouldn't start. I should have tried taking off the belt. Once I did that, it started right up and I couldn't move the pulley on the alternator 1mm - it was 100% seized. Thank you again for your help.

The whole diagnosis part wasn't particularly helpful for me, but the fact that the symptoms matched my car and you were the first source (of MANY I had tried) I saw suggesting a seized alternator pulley and lo - I went out to my car immediately, jacked it up, removed the front-right wheel, attempted to manually turn the crank pulley (impossible), removed the belt and confirmed the seized alternator pulley. So I do have to thank you very much!

Had to revisit this one after a call today.. No crank, no start, only a click from the starter. No dice after putting TWO separate starters in it. Remembered your training in the heat of my frustration, back to basics. 450 amps flat on starter wire while key in crank position, crank pulley seized, removing spark plugs didnt help, acc pulleys smooth. Sure enough, dipstick showed only a drop of black oil, and customer was 6 months overdue for an oil change! Calling it an engine. Apparently not too uncommon on the 2013 Sonata

I've seen similar symptoms with a seized a/c compressor, more than one time. Sometimes the belt will burn up and snap/slip off the pulleys which makes the diagnoses much easier and other times the belt shows no symptoms, like in this seized alternator case. Great practical video. Thanks

hi, i have had this exact problem with the same car, this one turned over faster and the actual difference in cranking speed was only 15 rpm. 185rpm and it would fire on the first couple of cylinders then flood, after removing the belt it cranked at 200 rpm and fired instantly. I took lots of wave forms with the pico of the cranking amps, crank and cam sensors, ignition primary and injectors. I learnt a lot from the ignition waveform the way the spark dropped off at the end of the burn time etc. I have only been using the scope for 18months or so but find your videos very helpful. I will email the wave forms over to you if you would like a look.

If you Google "mini cooper seized alternator" you will see this is a very common issue. here in the UK where these things are on every street corner it's a well known issue. Did the belt actually manage to turn the alternator, or was it slipping? They often just melt the belt, with acrid smoke and jellified rubber everywhere :) Another great video SD :)

Question. Isn't the Pico Scope way superior to the snap on scope at least in it's functionality and resolution? You are so good with scopes I would think you would use the Pico? I have a 2000 series Pico "wish I had the automotive class Pico" our shop has the Snap on Triton D10 at 7K , the 175$ Pico just seems better. How come you don't have a Pico "cart" setup at your brothers shop so you can use snap on with Pico I would think that's the winning combo. and

It's such a knee jerk to throw in a battery and starter motor, so I suppose getting burned with a case like this is not surprising. With that sound I would have been thinking battery, then I would have done a drop test. Then I would have paused, wondering how to make sense of it! The real clue came from the high current drain from the starter motor, but only if the tech had the insight to measure current draw. Gotta start doing that routinely. I like to think that on a good day I would have considered some kind of mechanical problem, ha ha. You realize that your videos are better than a mystery movie on Saturday night? Only thing is, they don't usually disclose the name of the villain in the title (grin). How about, "Mystery challenge -- crank no start".

But why the high current with the serpentine belt seized up? I need to understand this... It's mechanical resistance, how does the starter "know" it needs to work harder? If it was electrical resistance the current would've been lower, right? So that's the opposite of this kind of resistance I guess. And also, wouldn't the system voltage drop more than normal during cranking with this high current we saw initially? Please help me understand this! Love your channel btw! ::)

It is due to electric motor properties. When a motor is loaded down it draws more current automatically; when a motor is forced to run slower than it would free spin, the current goes up until no more current can flow and it stalls the motor. If you could jam motor output shaft and completely keep it from spinning and apply voltage you would get the maximum amperage reading.

SomeCoolName No problem man! If I could elaborate on my previous answer I would say a few key things to help with intuition... ~Lowering resistance increases current, and increasing resistance lowers current flow. ~Higher amps increase the strength of a magnetic field. ~Higher magnetic field in motor windings increases torque. ~Slowing/loading down a motor effectively "decreases" the resistance of the motor. Knowing these facts you can see that you can now see how it works. When a motor is loaded down its resistance decreases, so the current flow increases. That increased current flow creates a stronger magnetic field, which induce a higher torque applied to the load. If the increased torque is not enough to overcome the load the motor is further slowed which starts the cycle over again. This will continue until the motor is stalled at maximum current flow only limited by the electrical resistance of the windings. If the load disappears the rpm will increase and the opposite will occur. The effective resistance will increase, decreasing current to a point where the motor finds its balance at a minimum running current where a motor runs most efficiently.

Hi, Danner I've got burned by this before, only it was on a Cummins ISM The Injector fuel pump wasn't building pressure fast enough. So I had the customer buy a rebuilt pump and Installed it with same results, fuel pressure takes to long to build. Found the cause in those pesky simple pre checks. Engine speed must be a minimum of 150 RPM, new starter motor fixed the problem. Here is a link to another video about seize pulleys. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4W8kmeFpcmIpNUm30s

@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 10 жыл бұрын
The waveform characteristic will depend on a lot of variables. If the motor is not spinning then, yes, there will be no "humps". If the motor is spinning, the speed that it is spinning and the forces it encounters that slow the speed down will also change what the waveform looks like. Remember it is not just compression forces that can slow the starter down. Slower speed = higher amps

I would look to see if the car or at-least the engine has been for a dip in the ocean. That bottom crank pulley looked awfully corroded. 1.6 liter engine, that's small, turn the AC on and the engine dies... lol. Seriously though, I'd check to make sure that belt wasn't too tight prematurely wearing a bearing out. I've encountered bearings locking before, and most generally the belt will burn into while driving down the road. I wonder if that bad bearing immediately seized up after the engine was shut down, assuming the alternating bearing itself was the problem?
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 10 жыл бұрын
The 2002 MINI Cooper S with supercharger makes 161HP. You can barely tell the performance difference with the AC on or off. The belt is self-adjusting via a spring tensioner. The car was probably left sitting and it seized in place. From the video there appears to be some salt corrosion.
@asustech0079
@asustech0079 10 жыл бұрын
*****"The car was probably left sitting and it seized in place." Mind telling me how just sitting causes an alternator to seize if nothing else was wrong with it? Funny, all those cars over the years I've started that sat for who knows how long, and yet I don't recall a alternator seizing up because it just sat.... ? Unless of coarse the engine was left out in the rain to sit there and rust, but then you usually don't even mess with engines that bad to begin with, those are considered parts engines.
@aserta
@aserta 10 жыл бұрын
***** I believe you're confusing salt + rust corrosion with simple rust corrosion. If you have salt corrosion the process is triple the normal one and because of electrolysis parts will get seized up on a very small scale IE far harder to unfreeze a salty bearing than a rusty one. IMO salty corrosion is the worst thing that can happen to a car. It's like metal termites. And inside the alternator a part with multiple metals, it's like salt corrosion heaven, complete with water and electricity.

Mr Danner I have a 1988 camry with the famous 3sfe. I got the car really cheap it didn't run got it home and timing belt was out of time dramatically. I had it running one day an it died mysteriously and couldn't get it goin again. I rechkd timing belt was on the money. I chkd compression 142 psi every cylinder and it sounds good rolling engine over. All my block and body grounds and battery grounds are good to. Checkd fuel pump by jumper +b an fp could feel fuel flowing at fuel filter and injectors, chekd fuel psi at cold start valve its 42 psi while cranking tinjectors are also getting a pulse from computer. I have a nice fat spark on every plug, coil resistance readings are good. Im getting a signal from igniter back to computer about 1.5 volts. I have a good running parts car and swapped computers, distributors and car still will not start. I chekd engine main relay the ignition relay, circuit opening relay and all fuses they are good. I put computer in diagnoses mode and it has one long blank and 4 short blanks I figure that is a code 14. I know the ecu is good I chkd igf and igt terminals at computer im getting a pulse and a ground there I don't understand why the computer keeps saying that even after I unhook battery for 20 minutes. Could it be possible I have a broken wire in that circuit cause I chkd all the wires on the igniter they all had continuity. Could there be a bad sensor that is keeping it from running? On my parts car I found it will still start and run if the tps wire is unhookd so I thnk that sensor wouldn't stop it from starting? Im really stumped on this car if you have any suggestions that would be greatly appreciated

Nice job. I wonder if this vehicle was condemned by a mechanic as having a seized engine and the poor owner cut his losses by sending it to the auction. Not good if it was.

I did too Justin. In the video, I mentioned a seized starter motor. On that car, I called it a bad engine. Worst part, it was someone from my church that I was "helping" for free. They sold the car to someone I worked with for $500. I am still shaking my head on that one.

Your expensive tool didn't tell you shit. The readings would have been the same whether the engine was seized or the alternator. How can you say you gained any valuable information from that when your engine teacher deserves the credit. on a lighter note, I did like the video and appreciate you showing this awesome fix.

My neighbor put the wrong starter in his car,after he put it in,the car couldnt start. He foolishly thought the motor had seized up. He sold it to my other neighbor whom bought it and dropped the starter right in front of my neighbor after he bought it and showed him the starter was the wrong one. He was a rotten person because he told him it didnt matter,he had already sold it. He put another starter in it and drove it home. He sold it a few days later. I quit hanging around around him a few weeks later after he stole a couple snow mobiles from someone. My neighbor said he didnt care about the car but I felt bad he got ripped off. Any time you replace a part and the issue goes from bad to worse,suspect that new part. Never ever assume a replacement part is ok. I did a timing job where they never put a timing mark on the new timing gear. We compaired the replacement new one with the other new one that had no mark.All they said was oops!

I own the exact same car same year. They are awesome, but needy cars. If you're not rich you better be mechanically inclined 4sure!!! I've done over $10,000 worth of quoted work myself. Way more!!!!! Not sure how you freed up alternator??? Just replaced mine two days ago. Oh ya, two days before that I rebuilt a.c compressor only to rip the front end off again!!!!! Love Hate relationship for sure!!! This is my 3rd one. I'll always own 01-06 r53 they fly!!!!! ( when they run🤪) p.s you said it's a turbo. It's not, it's supercharged. Turbo started in 07. Cars are junk from 07 all the way to now. 2023
