Dude, THANK YOU!!! Did the timing chain on my 07 Mini with a N12 due to an unsolved P0013 issue. Ran for roughly 60 seconds, then died and wouldn't start. I thought I had just written off the motor. I had fuel, spark, air, and compression and it was almost like it wanted to start but would always sputter out. Checked every single fuse on the car. Tested fuel pressure, fuel pump, voltages, got a code for Footwell module on my Schwaben tool. Started ripping my hair out replacing fuel filter, vacuum pump, etc. Nothing worked. I watched this video and swapped the relay for the windshield wiper relay and the car fired right up. Thank you so much for this video.

OMG!! Thank you brotha!!! I've had these same issues for weeks now. I tested that same relay some weeks back with a relay tester and it tested good. After watching your video I noticed my RPM needle was not moving when I cranked the car. I replaced the crankshaft position sensor months ago but I decided to test it and it tested good. I tested the connector and it tested good. Instead of testing the relay again I decided to switch it with the one for the windshield wiper (same part number) and the damn thing fired right up! Thank you for the thorough explanation sir!

I am a retired mechanic that used to specialise in engine systems and diagnostics. I used to use a big workshop machine that included a scope and exhaust gas analyser. So I unsderstand well your scope readouts. Being able to use a scope is so useful. Even checking wheel speed sensors on ABS becomes possible. What I was particularly interested in was your nice handy little scope. Love it. I want to get one. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I had this exact same issue with my 2018 Volvo S90. I literally couldn't sleep while it was sitting in the shop because I didn't know if it was gonna be a $200 or a $2,000 fix. Luckily for me, it was around $189. Knowing a good and honest mechanic is a must.

Great explanation, this helped me fix a non- start issue with my R56 Cooper S turbo that would cut-out after 10-20 minutes driving then work perfectly again after 5 minutes of not starting. Car did not splutter to a stop so after replacing the glhightnoressure fuel pump and fuel filter I found this video and located the faulty fuel injector relay. My relay was Not exactly in the same location as in this video, mine was behind the ECU attached is a separate box on the fire wall. Otherwise identical to this explanation THANK YOU for posting this video.

Excellent video, but I'd like to add something for the benefit of those of us who can't afford to spend big money on equipment. In this case a $20 VOM would show that the relay is defective. Just connect the meter across the contacts and crank the engine. Even though the voltage is pulsing, the meter would indicate something far more than the mV's you'd expect from a good relay conducting current. Try AC and DC to see which works best. Please keep the videos coming.

Get really good with the snap on scope and then upgrade. I love my Pico but I'm always grabbing my single channel uscope for quick diagnosis. The Pico is so much better than the snap on as far as what all it will do and how much easier it is to play with a capture once you have one that it makes the snap on look pretty bad. I still grab the old modis we have from time to time but it's the last one I grab.

Couldn't agree more on the Vantage Pro. I am new to scope usage and have found it does all I need. I found one on eBay for $650 that was updated to 16.2. I later found a guy on eBay who offered to update mine to 17.4 (the last update for the Vantage Pro) for $250. The nice thing about updating it is the component test meter. It has a LOT of data in there about components and what you should see when testing. It gives a lot of info on how systems work. I can't afford $150/mo for a full service info subscription so the data in the Vantage Pro comes in VERY handy. I'm sure at some point I'll need a 4 channel scope but for now the VP works great. ScannerDanner has an entire video series on his premium channel on how to use it.

10:51 in my guess - from problems I had years ago with my 993 Porsche - there the DME Relais is known to fail at some age…. And a local mechanic temporarily solved it by unplugging it knocking it and cleaning the contacts. :-) His approach was exactly like yours, some start assist spray to see if fuel was missing - nope Then he already knew it (know issue on the 993) but he checked spark and then he pulled the Relais a couple of times and that fixed it.

Hello. Excellent video. I would like to ask you what you did with making the jumper on the relay, specifically you skipped the control (coil) or the power side of the relay. Is that as I indicated that when I put the relay the 12 V reached the power supply side towards the coils and then I put a permanent 12 V towards the same side that when it is energized it has 12 V. If you could help me with that question to understand everything well, I try to imagine it, but it doesn't give me a result.

Hello, thanks for the video. I'm facing a similar issue, but a little different - when I try to start, I see that the engine is almost starting (the rpm goes to about 1000ish) and then shuts off. I tried a few times to start it, it didn't start. Then, I re-inserted the key, tried to turn it ON and then the engine turns on normally. This issue happened a couple of times. Could you please tell me what this issue might be?
