The engine in my latest Ford Escort Mk2 project now looks AMAZING thanks to some parts that were restored by my friends at MicroBlast Services in Windsor (see links below) 😍
AND I have now SOLVED the issues preventing me from fitting the gearbox!! 😃

On the clutch release bearing tube and the starter motor pinion, it's a good idea to use copper grease instead of normal because it can withstand higher temps - normal grease will melt, run out and make a mess. 👍

Looking really good now. Brake lines look fab to me. Ballast resistors usually built into the loom on later cars, is there a Haynes to tell you. Idea is with engine running the coil LT side is fed through the ballast. With ignition on position three to start, as the battery volts dip with the starting effort, the electrics should short out the ballast resistor and let the coil see the full (dipped) battery terminal volts. In your case I wonder if that bulkhead solenoid might perhaps have the ballast resistor built into it. If you do any tests to figure it out be careful that full 12volts might burn some coils after a certain length of testing time. Hmmm perhaps you have an old scrap coil for that, just in case. If Ian's coil doesn't need a ballast (but the car has one) you may I guess need to bypass the ballast on ignition position 2. Anyhow, look forward to how you get on with that, and on this car nice to keep it orig and not fit electronic ignition. Look forward to the next installment. P.S. Remember orig panel gaps may not have been as good as modern cars.

At the end of the day you’re saving another Old Ford and keeping it on the road. There are people who take years to do what you’re doing. You’re smashing it and getting great results. Marcus Hayes - loving the build videos and the meet up and event videos are so cool. Unfortunatly we really don't have these events here in Australia, though I did go on a few Cortina cruises back in the early 2000's with my mk4 corty, really miss that. Anyhow I have a question that hoping someone can answer. I have a mk3 Cortina project which I have started working on again after sitting for a very long time. Engine wise I was looking at doing something different, as here in Australia we mainly stick with the Big 6's that are good for power but a little front heavy. So thinking of sticking a ST170 into my mk3 Cortina, question is does anyone make conversion kits or do people have to make up the engine/gearbox mounts?

Hey Marcus. What is the original carb the mk2 runs on? Because mine has a 38 weber twin barrel. And i dont think its the original. Believe here in RSA they came out with the 32 weber? Don't know.

1600 engines got the 32dgav. 1300s got the single choke carb except for the gt cars

A new one would be better. The throttle shaft wears and then leaks air so the idle mixture cannot be set properly

@@marcushayesfordPut a twin Weber on it mate. Had one of these singles on my 1300 25yrs ago and it barely made it up a steep hill. You’ll struggle in modern traffic too. 32/36 Weber all the way 👍🏽

im pretty sure that the coil on the xflow mk2 i owned was mounted on the offside inner wing mounted horizontally with the connections facing to the front of the car.

The air filter needs a seal to fit between the carb and filter it should lip into the air filter filter edge

Fantastic progress mate!! As another comment yes the ballast resistor is built into the main wiring loom, if you do remove it you won't need that extra feed from the solenoid, its a cold start 12volt feed to coil for a bit extra boost when its cold...obvs 🤣 if you keep the b/r then definitely wire it in.. But the coil you have there won't be suitable. From memory I think the throttle linkage is different between a Mk1 and Mk2 🤔 there should be a little bracket to support the clutch cable, bolted to the crossmember 👍

As for the 12v coil, is there any down sides to ditching the ballast and keeping the points???? I know years ago I had to ditch the ballast to run electronic ignition, but Im planning to keep Heidi on points old skool style. 👍

@@marcushayesford yeah easy enough to make a bracket mate. I had a 1300 Mk2 years ago with a ballast resistor fault, we just removed it, replaced it with the equivalent wire and used a full 12v coil, it just ran standard points and condenser with no issues 👍

The ballast resistor is built into the loom from standard , you will need a suitable coil to match otherwise you will get a weak spark...

Thanks for the advice mate! 👍 I think I remember on a Mk1 it's a pink wire that has a solid core rather than multiple strands. I'll do some research to find out where the ballast wire is on a Mk2. Or maybe I can simply measure the coil wire with my multimeter to find out?? 🤔

Your correct cut the pink wire out hidden in the loom and replace with normal wire.

Nope. They are the original exhaust manifold nuts. They are kind of slightly oval shaped which makes them lock. 👍

just some info that carburetor has a little ball bearing in it . if for any reason you take the top off it when it is still attached to the engine do not operate the throttle as the little ball bearing can jump out go down inlet manifold and you will only find out when you start up the engine and what ever cylinder it decides to go in will make a lovely mess . its a part of the accelerator pump how do i know it happened to someone i know 😎

Am sure that gearbox is 1100 as the bellhousing is not separate as will 1.3, 1.6,2.0 Turn your stater solinoid round as well terminals face rad you have to check that the starter meshing with ring gear it might be pre engaged not that inertia one you have so you won’t need solinoid

Every 1.1 and 1.3 x-flow should have come with type-2 gearbox that has integral bellhousing.

@countmurcielago9802 I had a felling the solenoid should be the other way round. The starter came with the engine, as did the flywheel. Pretty sure the other type of starter has a solenoid on the side of it and this one didn't. 👍

Hi mate engine is looking great you can use autosol chrome cleaner on the carb with a microfiber cloth and a toothbrush 🪥 for the nooks and crannies and a good buff up will look a lot better...Mike
