I think the exhaust would be way hotter. That would be a bad reading. Operating temp would be better from oil or coolent locations. Exhaust I thing operates in as high as 1000 degrees and this can be normal. I would take the reading around the thermostat or a hose. Probably the hose going into the radiator out of the thermostat. But i am by no means an expert more of a dummy, haha.
