The Engineering of Droplets and their Formation in a Commercial Inkjet Printer

Bill describes how the minimization of surface area and inertia compete to form droplets. He then shows how engineers use this knowledge to create precisely-sized droplets in a commercial inkjet printer -- the type used to print expiration dates on food packages.

Hello Bill - It's been 3 years since your last video, and i know you're writing a book right now, but i just wanted to say - thank you for all the videos you've made, they infected me with the love of technology, love of learning new things, and love of engineering - thanks to which, i was able to fix a lot of things in my home myself with the knowledge you and others like you shared with me, and was able to create things myself too - from simple toys for my pet rats, to building a radio all by myself. I don't live in a good country, but i will definitely try to save up for your book when it comes out. And i will keep trying to go to some kind of school to become an engineer, or even just a "simple" plumber, anyone who is able to create something as part of their job, and is challenged by new situations and problems. Your content inspired me, and i'm sure it inspired hundreds more. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything you do.

Man I was just going to say, Ink Jet Printers. The Videojet printers I work with use a crystal that vibrates at 60,000hz, thus making 60,000 drops per second. There's an LED light flashing at the same rate allowing one to actually see the drop formation using a loupe. After that, the charge tunnel and deflection plate work similarly to a CRT.

i went down a rabbit hole on droplet formation a couple months ago when i set out to build a fount that emulated sound of rain more realistically by creating falling droplets instead of streams i never before considered what an immensely complex process the formation of droplets is. for my application consistent sizing was not necessary and i instead relied on a fixed hole diameter and head height on the rainhead to achieve the desired results. thank you for this wonderful video

Your videos are some of the best on the internet. Your use of this medium for teaching is something all others need to consider for their content.

I love your videos. They are my favorite videos I've ever watched on KZbin, I wish there were more content creators like you on the channel who make learning engineering concepts so interesting. I wish you or a group of your engineering friends would collaborate to make more videos like these, the world needs more videos like these.
