Sir, why is the delta E of block not negative? Heat is leaving the block, it should be negative, right? according to prev. convention, leaving=subtracted= -ve entering=added=+ve

It is negative. If you plugged the answer into the equation mcDT the value would be negative. That second equation isn't saying the block is positive and the water is negative. It's just saying that DE of block is opposite the DE of the water. That "negative" in that equation really just says it is the "opposite" sign of the water. If you want, you could have put the negative on the other side of the equation. It's mathematically the same.
