Back when I used to play a crap ton of Forza Horizon 4 there was a weekly challenge involving playing Playground Games in a snowy park using old school muscle cars. There was a class restriction which limited what all you could upgrade, and putting snow tires on would exceed the limit except for one car, a Pontiac Firebird. The tradeoff was the Firebird was gutless, but you could turn on a dime. Every. Single. Game. that I had played in the Playground was full of people that were driving the cars with higher power ratings on stock tires. I could out-accelerate, out-brake, and out-maneuver all of them because I had the one thing they didn't, grip. I could have told a story about my real world experiences, but the video game story is far more memorable to me in demonstrating the effectiveness in a more entertaining approach.

I knew tire technology had improved over the past decade or so. I just didn't realize how *much* tire technology had improved! Wow! Those are some seriously impressive results!! I think back to when I was a kid in the '70s, and most of the tires out there were bias-ply. (Sure, radials existed, but bias-ply was still far more common.) Can you imagine comparing *those* tires to a modern tire?! The first car I ever bought (in February of '88) was a '76 Oldsmobile Cutlass S. Bought it from my neighbor who'd bought it brand new in the fall of '75. It had bias-plies on it, no joke! Atlas bias-plies from the local Gulf station. Best thing I ever did was upgrade those tires to a nice set of radials. Those bias-plies were like driving on ice when you were on dry pavement! How did any of us ever survive?! 😂

Great performance is awesome and all, but ... I'ma regular person that doesn't go to the track, and doesn't even hardly drive spirited on the streets. I use my car for getting groceries and trips and stuff. I live in Houston, so I don't need winter or even all-season capabilities. A summer tire would be awesome. However, I also don't want my tire to wear out super fast and I don't need ultra high performance rated tires. What I really want is a summer tire, that sacrifices ultra high performance for reduced tire wear. I want my tires to last. That's all I really want in a tire. My car came with Potenza RE04's back when it was new in 2014. Great tires, and the car handled amazing with them. However, they wore out very quickly, even after I stopped driving aggressively. I ended up putting some decent all season tires on it because I wanted longevity over the performance, I believe some middle ground can be had, summer tires that last a long time, but I've never found them. Is this a thing that exists, or something that tire companies could do? Lots of people don't need all season or winter tires, but also don't need high performance. Actually, I think almost everybody that lives in the south of the US doesn't need high performance, but also doesn't need all season or winter. Why not a long lasting summer tire for the millions of people that live in the south that just use their vehicle for commuting and other mundane normal people things?

It's not like Conti benefit by throwing the test anyway, since this is their tyre vs their older one, it's not saying they're better than other manufacturers. Not sure about the US market, but older versions in the same range here (UK) don't even usually seem to be cheaper, e.g. For my car, Eagle F1 Asym 2s are 5% pricier than Asym 6s, while the Pilot Sport 4 is only 1% cheaper than the 5. The marketing benefit to Conti is: they did this test, which is great. I'd love to see some properly tyre-adjusted laptimes of old cars somewhere, see if the newer ones really are always faster by more than the difference. I'd bet the results are close in a lot of cases...

That's why I mentioned they're the exact same treadwear rating (within a single manufacturer, this means they will basically have equal tread life).

Same goes for bicycle tires btw. A good set of tires absolutely transforms how a bike handles. I recommend the Schwalbe Marathon Efficiency for commuter/normie/training/hybrid bikes. Seems expensive but it's worth it.

I love how much you love tires. It’s actually contagious…

The conclusion of this video is the slogan of one of Continental's competitors🙂 What would also be interesting is knowing if the gains in grip come with the sacrifice of the total distance driven with a set of tyres.

When we went England for the Aston Martin Driving Experience at the Millbrook Proving Grounds they had us turn up and down the embankment using the gas pedal with our hands off the steering wheel, very trippy!

I’m glad you did the 3rd test. I just wish you would have done a 4th test of old car with old tires.

I installed a complete set of pilot sport 5 on my car and its unbelievably good in wet. It feels better in the wet than some tires in dry

Honestly the level of good study design here is praiseworthy! You could probably publish that data :)

Another excellent relevant test review that actually benefits every car driver & owner. Well done and Thank you.

Glad that you made this as consumers *really* need to better understand that tires are the most important part on their car. Cheap, generic tires not only tend to be poor values in terms of both handling and longevity, but they can be downright dangerous. You can be a cheapskate about many things, but not when it comes to tires.

Proper science done here, love it! I'd love to have seen a pure lateral grip performance test done on a circular skid pad to compare the lateral grip of each car and tire as described in "The Unfair Advantage" by Mark Donohue. (Awesome book BTW, highly recommend it to all automotive engineers) Also, what was the weight difference and weight distribution between the two cars? was the lighter of the two ballasted up to the other? I once read that car and tire manufacturers test their products in county Wicklow, Ireland, where we import roads from Afganistan when they are done with them. Have Continental done this?

I love your tire videos! This comparison is one of my favorites! Thanks for creating this excellent content! 😎👍

I'm sure these differences would be even greater with heavier vehicles as well. I drive an 03 Acura MDX, not something you do anything sporty in, but it has a lot of power, and is a full sized crossover, so it weighs a decent amount. Watching this made me realize that I should probably make sure it has some good tires on it, sooner, rather than later, especially with it being a heavier car, that is all wheel drive. It drives very well in unoptimal situations, but it doesn't always stop super well. All wheel drive, does not mean all wheel stop, and I'm probably going to buy some good tires to make up that difference because of this video. (also, I really want a GR Corolla, but I'm gonna wait about another year so insurance isn't as expensive. Really jealous that you were able to get one.)

Fantastic video. I have thought about this a lot with respect to the Car and Driver Lap Lightning and Nurburgring lap times. I want to see more older cars on newer tires!

Been hearing this for years that better tires will improve lap times over doing engine mods. Cool to see data to back up. I run the dws all season on my 2011 STI and is a great all season tire.
