@@robertthomas5906 Running through the gears on a old twisty mountain road has no one to "beat" you, its just pure enjoyment. Yes CVT is that old, it was banned from F1 in 92 and that really slowed the progression of the technology.
@SheepInACart3 жыл бұрын
I disagree entirely, if it where the case the case that requiring more engagement to complete tasks was the goal, Model T would be a far better "drivers car" than any of what are actually era defining sports offerings, and steam powered traction engines would be on the cover of car magazines. Instead its not a drivers car because you do more, its a drivers car because you don't think about the disconnect of the controls between you and the reaction you desire. Older automatics are terrible for this as your constantly trying to think what state its in, and how it will react to your input, and even then it might shift when you didn't expect it... it feels like trying to ride a blindfolded horse. Yet this really hasn't been the comparison for a couple of decades, and the fast shifting duel clutch sequential and paddle controls realize what you intend more directly and with less thought/error margin in results than an H pattern, allowing you to feel more connected to vehicles that already feature more capability than you can casually approach the limits of. An H pattern might give you something to do with an otherwise boring car on a back-road, but I don't think anybody has taken an f1 car for a lap and gone "I know they do paddles because its faster, but it'd be way more fun if I could shift the gears myself".... while a great many likely think that about the 1L DCT VW Polo, even though the transmission is objectively faster, and if you stay up on maintenance (they are fussy about what fluids ect) otherwise pretty good.

my old man actually got on the list because the sales guy had called him from the dealership where he bought his Gen 2 CTS-V and it asked him if he had signed up as one of the 250 reservations for the ct5 VW in my dad said no and the sales guy said all right there's still room so I'll put your name in so I guess we are one of the 250 on the list for the ct5. now to me it's just a matter of seeing when the configurator goes live on the Cadillac site and then seeing when the salesman calls my dad back to see how he wants to configure his. I love everything about the car but my one gripe is just how the front fascia looks I just don't think it looks aggressive enough for what the Black wing is supposed to signify. Initially when you look at the front end it almost looks like a entry level trim ct5 and the other thing is that there's no Black wing symbols anywhere on the exterior so how do you even know that it's a black wing unless you look at the quad exhaust or the size of the rotors or the size of the tires.

That's not true at all. What he did say is that they couldn't compromise the structural integrity of the chassis by punching a hole through it for gear linkages. The actual manual transmission is the easy part. "Executive chief engineer Tadge Juechter told Car and Driver that part of the reason is the desire to not breach the mid-engine C8's central tunnel: "That tunnel is the backbone of the car, and if you break the backbone, you lose a lot of structural efficiency. With a shifter, you have to have a big hole in the tunnel for the linkage to go through."

This engine is based on the LT4 with Cadillac-specific tuning. The LT4 is just an LT1 with a supercharger and internal upgrades to handle the extra 190hp/tq. The C8 has the LT2, which itself is also just a slightly redesigned LT1 (the engine itself is the same, it's really only the intake and exhaust manifolds that changed). In other words, it technically already has this, but it will get a proper supercharged option when production normalizes. There were supposed to be updates for the 2021 model year but those never happened because of supply and pandemic issues.

The coolest part of a hot V V8 engine is the use of twin-scroll turbos with a cross bank manifold. Looks like Jason had it drawn on his blackboard but didn't get into it. Because of all the different directions of metal expansion they are super expensive to develop and make reliable, so probably best GM doesn't go there, lol.

Well, the best way to safe the world is to give people good public transport. 1) It pollutes way less than a car. (even the most boring car) 2) If all the noobs are riding on public transport, then the car guys have the roads at their disposal... 3) If you are far away from home and you just to get somewhere quickly, then you don't have to hire a car and think where to park it.

I was mostly listening, only glancing at the video. Just a comment on the audio, you used words like "previously" when talking about the older engine, which had me confused. Had to rewind several times. Content wise, this was good info as always. I like learning about engineering differences and not just stat sheets. You've got a great niche there.

There's nothing wrong with pushrods. The LT4 engine is robust and reliable. Yes, it's older technology, but so are wheels and those also work.
@jaydunbar75383 жыл бұрын
Always find the "haha pushrod" crowd funny, meanwhile people are yanking those DOHC and such engines out and smashing an LS into just about everything for performance and reliability.

lol, on the Corvette Rip! Sounds like the folks at Cadillac are saying "I think we know who the old mans car is here, and it's not ours." Good on Caddy for still delivering full sized Bruisers that are still interactive with the storied power control lever inside. Though I probably have it backwards, it's surely us 40 and over crowd that are the reason for it being.
@usonumabeach3003 жыл бұрын
So what was the hp/lb ratio for the 2 engines? Hp/L doesn't mean much in practice since OHC engines weigh more than OHV, and take up more space. On a side note, I'd love to see all of this new tech applied to old big blocks. The buick 455 was extremely lightweight compared to other brands, but produced the most torque, and whooped ass off the line. Also curious why switchpitch torque converters never made a comeback, when cylinder shut off did.

Thank you for explaining twin-scroll. It’s ironic that in Europe there are very few performance cars available with a manual transmission, RHD Mustang accepted, which or course comes the US.

I love that jab at the corvette at the end. They spent all this time and money to make it an interesting car for those of us who aren't in retirement, and they succeeded.... until they decided no manual. LOL. I haven't ever owned an automatic, and I sure as heck won't be buying one now. Now that I'm finally past having entered the job market at the height of the recession, and I'm really interested in getting a nice car soon, I'm going to have to pull an Ed Bolian and buy some depreciated manual something.

Great explanation about the use of twin scroll turbochargers. Dropping the 4.2 so quickly makes me wonder what really was wrong with the engine. Was it more expensive to build than previously estimated? Seems fabulous otherwise.

Cadillac's decision to not continue with the 4.2l makes me wonder if it had reliability problems so they instead decided to stick with a tried and true Corvette engine. Smart move I think.
@good4jg3 жыл бұрын
I agree - tried and true FTW. There was NO upside in replacing it with a vastly more complicated and expensive design that very few would actually buy (because it's a GM product) and risk the "I-told-you-so" if it wasn't absolutely perfect.

Why did GM kill off the Commodore? That had the 6.2 litre V8 with 6 speed manual transmission, rear wheel drive and came with a supercharger option. The worst marketing decision was to badge it as a Pontiac or Chevy in the US - it should of been badged as a Holden Commodore here in the US to let people know that it was something different and special.

So that’s where our Holden Commodore stamping machines etc went to! I’d recognise a VE/VF roofline anywhere!
