When working with linen fabrics , you may find it easier not to completely dry them, you want to pull them from the dryer 80% dry and then iron them. Once completely dry the wrinkles will set and you will not only spend a lot of time ironing them out, they will tend to come back more easily.

Or just wet it down and then iron. A little spritzer is invaluable when you’re ironing linnen. Yes, I *love* my linnen… :D

For making your own pattern peices I like to use newsprint or packing paper. It's thicker than commercial pattern tissue, but still thin enough to pin through. You can find it really cheap in the moving/packaging/storage section of your local hardware store. Incase you were wondering I am usually able to get 2-3 pattern peices from 1 sheet of paper; and I paid $10 for 100 sheets at my local Lowe's home improvement store. This paper is also great for tracing and transferring pattern marking off of delicate vintage pattern tissue.

Your pieces look so beautiful, And I love that you added these two really bold colors for the skirts - and yes, take your time in making your clothes is important, I made this mistake very often - every Project finishes at the time, when it is ready.

If you are losing pattern Tetris it can often be done by cutting each piece out from a single layer rather than 2 at a time on the fold.

Ironing is the most important part of sewing ( apart from the sewing of course). My iron is set up next to the machine. I have also ironed on a table with some towels down to protect table. This is something I had to learn. Ironing makes the work easier and look a lot more professional. I am enjoying following you. I'm planning to crochet a yoke but its mid winter in nz so not for awhile yet.

I iron everything. EVERYTHING. I pretty much never cut anything out without ironing the fabric unless it's something I'm not going to prewash, like a silk or a wool (and during the process I'll be ironing or steaming every seam.)

For the orange/rust skirt, you could use bias tape, mock French seams, or possibly run and fell or hand felled seams. Pinking shears might work, but test it on a fabric scrap first (including putting it through the wash), as pinking isn’t effective for all fabrics.

Lessons were learned about chain stitch machines 😂 I only have a straight stitch antique machine, so no stretchy fabrics for me. I'm so glad you made those shorts! I have been considering that pattern. They're very cute.

For pattern paper my mother buys industrial roles of baking paper, it's semi-transparent, sturdy and wide and as a plus not expensive where we live. I'd look into it as an option. Love the skirts colours and Nutellas cameos xxx

Zigzagging seam allowances together is a quick afterthought finish that keeps up with the washing for years (at least 20, to my experience, and still going). It is not as neat as french seams, felling or binding, but it works.

agreed, but Im not sure her machine does anything but straight stitch.

That's true. I guess whip stitching/ overcasting the allowances together would be the handsewn thing.
@infamoussphere7228

I have a machine from the 80s and I zigzag most things cause I don't have an overlocker - although I flat fell seam my shirt side and sleeve seams - not the armholes though cause doing a felled seam on a curve is horrible. I've recently switched to pinking some fabrics if they're not too ravelly, because it saves on thread. I'd definitely recommend pinking shears - pinked seams are very common in vintage home sewn garments.
@kimzachris5340
@kimzachris5340 3 жыл бұрын
I would very much like to try out pinking shears, I imagine they would be a dream for curved seams. Where I went to school, textile crafts classes were part of the regular schedule for ages 7-13 (after that it was optional), but as far as I can remember, the only seam finish we were taught was zigzagging. Felled and half-felled seams may have been mentioned, or taught on a case by case basis, but mostly as a style detail. French seams I only recall coming across later. So I guess I just kept zigzagging because it worked well enough, and I don't mind my homemade clothes to look a bit homemade as long as they fit well.

I think for finishing the side seams of the orange skirt I personally would overcast them. It’s a bit time consuming but ultimately very easy! No need to be finicky like flat felled seams(which I also love) and they contain fraying VERY well!! I highly recommend it. The basics of overcasting: handsewing finish, both seam allowances together, stitch only coming through the back of the fabric. It will loop the thread over the raw edge looking diagonal from the front and straight from the back. Try to not pull tight and fold the seam allowance. I know there are lots of tutorials on KZbin for this stitch which explain it much better tho. 😄

Yay for making wardrobe pieces!! And as for pronouncing “Caribbean”… I’m not saying this is official, but this is how I use the two pronunciations. I use “CARE-i-be-an” for the Disney rides/movies, and then “cah-RI-be-an” for the place.

@FlybyStardancer ~ ~ it was always CARE - ah - beian . However it seemed to change in the 60’s due to the TV News people not checking the pronounce column of many words in the dictionary! When Cape Canaveral came in with the Rockets, the name was changed much to the Native Floridian chagrin! And right now, I can’t even think of what they named it. Seems like it was 3 words. Most of us could tell if you were a “new” person by which title you used. The Press has changed half of our lakes names! I know my Daddy and Uncle would not have appreciated it at all! Especially if that lake was one of their favorite fishing lakes!

I was a bit surprised about the tee, as when I'd clicked on that pattern previously it looked like something made for stretch fabrics and as far as I know double gauze is a woven rather than a stretch. Did you add significant amounts of ease to account for the woven fabric? I only ever sew wovens because I don't have an overlocker, so I just buy t shirts rather than make them. I love the colours of your gauzes and linens! It's a good idea to not try and rush through projects (unless you absolutely have to, like you're being assessed on them) because you get tired, make mistakes, etc. Sometimes I'll have to just put something down because I know I don't have the time or energy to do it properly.

I wonder if you could solve the neck hole problem with a little vertical slit/split in the collar (bind or hem the edges?). That would allow it to go over your head and you could either leave it open or do a closure. A little button and loop would look cute, or you could do a crochet collar with strings that tie off in a little bow.

Oh hey I have that same iron. :) This might be a weird thing to comment, but I really appreciated seeing your shorts pattern pieces. I made a self drafted pair of shorts recently and the pattern looks really big laid out and it gave me some bad body feels. But seeing you do your shorts Im realizing oh, that's just what shorts are like, they look bigger flat than they do actually on the body. Which is basic and logical but I hadn't quite connected the dots
@infamoussphere7228
@infamoussphere7228 3 жыл бұрын
shorts and pants patterns look really big and weird, because they have to cover more of your leg than skirts do. I remember the first time I learned how to do trade drawings - where you draw sketches of clothing accurate to the actual measurements instead of a fashion sketch or a representation of how they'll look on the body - and every drawing I ever did ended up looking very wide and very weird. Pattern pieces are just weird looking in general

One way to get stretch in your seams (at least this is what I used to do with my straight stitch machine before I got a more modern one) is to physically stretch your fabric as you sew it. I used this method to sew knits for years, and it works great.

Possibly tied on the side. On a gal in a store with a figure much like yours. I think it would look so cute. Also, perhaps a(nother?) romper ( I forget who made one), with a secret snap joining.
