In this video, I discuss the lengthy and intertwined history of the comet/shoreliner based railcars. Cars that are based on this design are everywhere in the country and almost every single level railcar in the country is based on them. First, you have new jersey transit which had every model in the series. Then you have metro north who has their own set of shorelines, and amtrak who has their own fleet of horizons. Septa and Exo also have their own fleets of comet/shoreliner based railcars. Then the MBTA has its fleet of BTC-1's and CTC-1's. These railcars are all over the northeastern railway system and still after 40 years, they are the backbone of the northeastern commuter fleet.

Recently MNR 5010 (formerly NJT 5010) was fitted with new technology to clean leaves on MNRs route and I've seen it before. It is now being used on a train called The Laser Train. Edit: MNR 6131, 6134, 6136, 6143, 6145, 6147, and 6149 used to be Comet cars 5178 (now 6131), 5986 (now 6134), 5987 (now 6136), 5980 (now 6143), 5981 (now 6145), 5982 (now 6147), and 5983 (now 6149). All of them were renumbered in 2009 and 6147 was involved in the December 1, 2013 Spuyten Duyvil derailment and is currently unknown where it is.

Yess, I've been waiting for this. I feel these workhorses don't get nearly enough attention, and it's nice they're getting more in depth coverage here. What a great way to end the series, nice work man!

Just a slight correction. The “Shoreliner” Bombardier built cab cars and coaches for Metro North east of Hudson service were nicknamed “Bomb” cars by the vast majority of train crews and mechanical workers. I worked with MN for 26 years and almost never heard them called Comets or Shoreliners.

The long doors on the Comet 2’s were added when they were rebuilt around 2002. Originally the traps could only be opened with the (short) side door already open. The comet 3 and 4 addressed that shortcoming with long doors, and the feature was incorporated in the comet 2 rebuild.

Oh, and Comet 4 Plus Comet 2 equals Comet 7 (A fan-made Comet car from TVCTA Rail, a fan-made commuter railroad). But, Comet 1's, 1B's, and 3's are sold to TVCTA Rail as well as half of the Comet IV and some Comet V's from NJT to TVCTA Rail. It's not delivery, it's Tom and Ben Enterprises' idea of selling the retired Comets and most Comets to TVCTA Rail.

When I used to visit my grandparents in Reading, Mass., I'd get to ride into Boston on the MBTA trains, and at the time, they had the CTC 1 and CTC 3 series cars. The initial 4s were almost finished but not ready to deploy, just to give you an idea of when exactly this was. And as far as I know, all the trains at the time had some version of the F40PH locos. Just my little anecdote.

I know, right? And now it's looking like they'll be adding a new chapter to the saga in Connecticut on the CT Rail line from Hew Haven to Springfield via Hartford. Edit: so I found out CT Rail got the CTC/BTC-3s from MBTA, not the C/BTC-1s.

Correction at 4:17: In 1978, Comet IA cars would be produced by General Electric from surplus Arrow III EMU shells. Can you please edit that, nyrailfan 202?

I wonder what the shoreliner replacement cars would be? A shoreliner v? what ever it is I hope the Metro North keep the traditional single level cars and the shoreliner replacement design would be based off of the Alstom comet v design with some upgrades

I guess its pretty common consensus that most Railfans call the commuter versions Comets regardless of the railroad (Except for ironically Metro-North where "Shoreliner" caught on.) Even here in Philly most of us call them Comet or Bombers

Height restrictions cant allow double decker cars in the east. Bombardier: laughs in multilevel. Exo: cackles in comet II, bilevel and multilevel. Amt(exos predecessor)in the 2010's: wheezes in comet ii, leased comaro and comet iii from njt, multilevel, canadian vickers galley cars, hawker siddley rtc-85, bilevel and ex amtrak f40phs.
