Yes another remade episode of engines of metro north. But this is about a special piece of equipment, the budd m1 and m3. The m1 started out in 1968 and was only retired in 2006/2009 which is almost 40 years of service. The m3's started out in 1982 and are still providing reliable service today. Both multiple units have served metro north and the long island railroad well and the m3's will continue to do so.

Great remake! Something about a 4-car M3 train at 6:26 is a bit unnerving. Even the West Hempstead branch on the LIRR has a minimum of 6 cars. I'm also having a Q&A video soon if you're interested.

This was back when ridership on the upper Harlem line was low as it had just been electrified. Even 4 cars was an improvement over the previous diesels

What happened was this in the 1970s was a third rail voltage increase 600/650v dc LIRR Top Contact third rail & 700v dc New York Central Metro-North bottom contact third rail into 750v DC Third rail for M1& M3s replacement M7 & M9s. If you are able to look at Metro-North look ahead plan M3As are going to be replaced by M9As

You the M9AS are definitely gonna be replacing all the M3AS on the Metro North railroad Harlem and the Hudson lines.

What were the dates that the LIRR (from the video, sounds like early 1970s?) and Metro North third rail voltages were increased? From the video, it sounds like the LIRR didn't have any more old 600 V/650 V stuff to worry about after the early 1970s, but Metro North had ACMUs for a while afterwards, and FL9s into the 2000s, so what did they do about those things not being designed for the higher voltage?

The M3AS on the Metro North is not going nowhere until the M9AS to come and replace them. The Long Island railroad was very smart enough to keep 80 cars of the Long Island railroad on the side. We wish that the Connecticut metro North railroad would of did the same exact thing keeping the M2S M4s M6S around instead of scraping them. There wasn't nothing wrong with the M2S M4s M6S.

They are not sure yet because the M9AS for metro North railroad did not get here yet because they have to finish up the M9S for the Long Island railroad to go to Grand Central terminal Madison Avenue Manhattan.
