How to Install Piston Rings

I got a couple questions. I ordered an engine tech rebuild kit for a 2001 5.9 l Cummins diesel. Question number one on the rod bearings half of them are shiny. The other half are dull color which one is the upper? and which one is the lower? The second question is on the top piston ring. It wasn't marked and looked identical on both sides Does this mean it could go either way?

And of course the end gaps need to be away from the thrust side and end gaps at 180 degrees from each other, including wipers.
