It all depends on when it happens. If you have mild white smoke coming out when you start the car after a long night then that’s fine, it will stop as the engine heats up but if it’s consistent then you may need to see a mechanic.

I had an old 302 rebuilt and I’m guessing he used old pistons and rings because now it burns oil and blows white smoke. The old pistons had a really bad blowout. Too bad I’m 3 hours away or I would take it back for him to fix what I paid for.

My car's oil consumption is getting worse and worse. It does smoke but only at very high rpm when I floor it. Otherwise it idles fine, has no smoke and no obvious loss in power. Is this an early sign of piston rings or stuck piston rings? This has been going on for over a year now and different mechanics tell me different things. But surely after a year the engine would have blown up by now no?

@@carproblemsmax Thanks for the detailed reply. It's going to mechanic no.4 the following week so hopefully they'll be able to get to the bottom of it. What's frustrating about issues like this is that it's hard to be 100% sure without tearing apart the engine. PCV valve was changed too with no joy but I didn't know bad cats can also cause bad oil consumption and mine seems to be rattling slightly under load so that could be worth checking. @@HendrickT-bi4iw mine was too giving out white smoke at very high RPM not while driving normally. It was also consuming engine oil at a very fast rate. It turned out to bad piston rings. The issue was resolved after changing it. I'd say piston rings/walls are the culprit.

I'm no mechanic but if it was stuck rings I think after a year of driving with very frequent oil changes it would have resolved itself or at least got better. This next mechanic wants to flush the oil and try some products but I'm tempted to say don't bother and just give me an engine rebuild quote.

2013 challenger 64. Hemi auto. I sometimes notice a second or 2 loss in power during hard acceleration before the hemi comes back to life. What do you recommend. It runs and drives fine currently

Probably the transmission.. Try taking off the transmission pan and don't lose the magnet that sets in there, and just drain it, don't get it flushed if you see any good bits of metal on that magnet or in case there isn't a magnet in the pan, just look at the fluid and filter it through a coffee filter and see if much metal is present. Also look for what color the fluid is first before doing any of that. If it's still super red and clear looking it should be good or may just need topped up. If it is reddish and not so clear and maybe brownish just drop that pan and get a good gasket replacement and most likely an aftermarket drain plug since most chrysler/dodge these days don't seem to have one (know mine doesn't but its a chrysler concorde limited with the 3.5 liter from 2002). Fixed mostly all of my shifting problems by just a drain and letting the pan seal up a bit, it only seemed to start being worse in the winter months, perhaps from water buildup of some kind from checking the transmission fluid quite often.. Don't really know other than the car was ran hard before i bought it.. Does need new rings i'm betting since it does a bit of slap and uses and turns my oil browner than it should be with mostly white smoke out the exhaust. Your other or main problem may just be in some wire or protection from the ECU that isn't right. Tried getting a bluetooth obd2 scanner? They help a ton, and cheap..

Car has had overheating issues various times but just from cooling system issues etc certain it’s a head gasket issue but concerned about my positions before I do all the work tearing down the Beamer engine I don’t believe I have oil burnoff just coolant does that rule out piston damage or headwarp?

No way to check the rings without taking it apart . No easy or cheap way if you check them replace them , I have a 2016 Audi A5 Sline and I have replaced everything to find out the valve head was broke at the top and the rings are bad ! Thank God I got a buddy who fixes it , Audi wanted 7k to fix it hellll nooooo ! Buy new engine for that price. Had the morning misfire until warm then as got worse missing while driving after new plugs and coils from Audi . Compression is going slowly

Do any piston ring and exhaust symptoms overlap? I have one mechanic saying my issue is the piston rings and another say exhaust. Aren't these completely different? (I have check engine light, low compression in cylinder 1 (P0301), car jerks and I get a 'service traction', egg smell, shakes more when heat on) It's a 2010 Chevy Cobalt. Do you have any ideas?
