Great to see Marcus Smith playing so well (his kicking and tackling seem to me to have improved) and he really will frighten opposition teams if England get fast ball. NZ will do everything to slow the ball down and force Smith to kick a lot, which isn't his best area, but he is better than he was and we have excellent players under the high ball these days. If Underhill stays fit he is a nightmare for the opposition and yes, our front row is a concern - I don't seem to to remember Bevan Rodd having issues in the scrum for Sale, so I wonder what happened against Japan - it's a shame Baxter wasn't given a go. Still, England will be worrying NZ, as they are now settled and playing well, and the AB's are starting over.

It's too late now, so Marcus will start and Fin won't be on the bench as Furbank covers 10. Regarding the "miss tackle", I think he wasn't going for the tackle as he thought Theo Dan had him, he was going for ball rip. It's a shame if people write him off because of a miss tackle when he has the best tackle stats of any back in the prem.

My only argument would be with Randall on the bench. There is such a big difference in quality and size between NZ and Japan, there is no way England will have the loose game and easy lines of running they had in the Japan game. Randall’s kicking was really poor and he was one of the bench players who performed poorly during that 20 minutes or so when Japan had the upper hand. Spencer had s so much more of a complete and thoughtful player, I cannot understand for the life of me why he isn’t on the bench.

Eggsy on paper we could cancel each other out tho agreed on the front row capers it seems we have reversed the trend and you are playing catch up Well done to Borthwick as his vision is expansive and we shall see how the results go for us I’ve not been excited about coaches since John Mitchell led the boys to Aus 2003

Tim, if 6 is did nothing wrong how has Randall hit that level? Poor kicking, one of which led directly to a Japan penalty. Appreciate that he adds tempo but, imo, the control that Spencer brings is more important vs NZ (not that he is a slouch in attack either). Consistently surprised that Spencer doesn’t get more of a look in for England as he is exceptional in the prem.

Itoje seems to be assuming he turns up and he’s a shoe in. Borthwick missed a chance with Alex Coles against Japan in not putting him on the bench. He has outplayed Itoje the last 2 times they have played each other. Hoping he makes amends in NZ Also give Baxter a chance instead of Rodd
@thewomble1509

Agreed. Itoje could do with a rest and England need to find a couple of new lock pairings. I'd Coles/Martin. Coles has the height and agility, Martin is a beast in the tight and loose.

Did you watch the game? Itoje had more game interactions than one of our backrowers and the added carrying work was good to keep momentum. Given Coles plays TH lock or 6 he won't have matched against Itoje and as he doesn't call the lineout it would be bold to play him instead of him.
@andygillett9999
@andygillett9999 3 ай бұрын
@@martinw3178 yes I watched the game. Maro has always been a brilliant player. But has dropped off considerably over the past 18 months. My point was that it is time to give others a chance and Alex Cole’s has played well against Saries and many others in the premirs. I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure he calls the lineoutes for the Saints as well!

Can you imagine Arundle coming into the team at 15 (when he is selectable again) and Radwan on a wing (maybe Freeman into the 13 slot when Slade retires). What a back three that would be. Rapid!

Using this one game to rate Bevan Rodd seems a bit thin, he can scrum and has stood up well in the past so i really do not believe his race is run, at the moment Marcus over Finn is a no brainer but would like to see Spencer in the mix before Randall.

Should be a tight Series. Pretty evenly matched, I think England may just have a edge with cohesion. A New Coaching staff and systems etc may take a little time come up to speed. I think we may have to try and go after England at scrumtime. Do you think imports in the premiership are costing the development of worldclass Props? We have near Bok level depth currently.. the 5 in the squad are great, We also have Bower, Moody, Ta'avuo, Numia, Renata, Ansley that are all test Quality.

Japan have gone backwards with an aging side & offered England little as a challenge. England well what did we actually learn since the 6N. I think calling them AB ready is getting ahead of oneself. The Auckland & Chiefs players in the final showed better speed, recycling & ingenuity. Borthwick will have a proper test & my prediction is not a good one for England

Bevan Rodd was an off the wall selection from Eddie Jones and he’s just stuck around. I’ve seen no evidence that he can play at this level. He’s decent around the park but so are many looseheads. Yet he doesn’t scrummage at an elite level. So why is he selected? Odd.

Generally agree with the rating except Lawrence and Earl. Lawrence was a 5. Too many mistakes, too often a touch too slow to where he should be in both defence and attack and he makes poor decisions. With Slade flying out and too often the gap not being closed properly I can see our midfield being exploited. 33 missed tackles v Japan is fine. The same against the ABs will see England having to chase the game. Earl the best player in the backrow and arguably on the field. It's not just the insane work-rate but the threat he poses without the ball. He had a significant part in 4 of the trys, scoring one, making one and acting as the decoy runner that committed the defence for both Mitchel and Smiths trys. Oh and no the debate isn't over re Marcus Smith as it's never been a question that he can deliver off the front foot against inferior teams. He ran down a couple of blind alleys even v Japan and I'd expect more of the same v the ABs. He simply doesn't have Fin Smiths game control and composure. Where is his performance to match Fins v Munster a man down or the second half v Leinster? Closest he got was Bordeaux and that was a huge team effort with him on the front foot.
