Safe to say, the worst performance of the defending world champions in the history of the Cricket World Cup since it started in 1975. At least England have that honour to bring home with them. Well done lads!

@@jimcarter3322 Quite possibly. The only one that may come close and you have to be as old as me to remember it is Steve Davis losing 10-1 to an unknown Tony Knowles in the Snooker World Championships in 1982.

There still seems to be a reluctance to consider the age of this team. The talk here is "it won't affect the Test team, the players will come back into form" - there are a lot of ageing players, how are they going to get better as they get even older??

FAKHAR, THE PHOENIX… An interesting attribute of ODIs is, the batting team can most often double whatever the score is at the end of thirty overs if they have enough wickets in hand. Considering this, with twenty overs to go, the Kiwis were looking pretty ominous and Pakistan increasingly clueless. Pakistan’s much vaunted pace attack promised the Biryani to their ravenous and die-hard supporters but, as it has so often happened with them in this world cup, could only deliver a bun sans the kabab. Anyway, their performance was a true reflection of the form they carried into this tournament. The Kiwis carted them all over Chinnaswamy, without respite. In the end, 401 was a trifle less than what they were poised to put up on the score board. Pakistan, over the years, have been too obsessed with pace ignoring the need for a balanced attack of pace and spin. Pakistan’s spinners are just an apology for spin. Ironically, the pacers are the ones who have pushed Pakistan down the rabbit hole. Michael Vaughan’s observation that the Pakistan team needs controversies to fire them up may or may not be true. But there was no dearth of controversies in this world cup. It started right from where the buck stops, percolating down to the team management and players and the ex-players. Nothing seemed to fire them up, except what came out of the dressing room and the management including Mickey Arthur were excuses. With the threat of rain in the air, Pakistan’s only chance of salvaging the situation was to go hammer and tongs from ball one. Shafique left before he could make an impression. Having a plodding Babar at one end, Fakhar Zaman had no alternative but to go ballistic. He had hit nine sixes in his century before the rain kicked in. It was exhilarating stuff. Surprisingly, the entire New Zealand innings contained only eight sixes. At rain break, Pakistan were actually ahead as per DLS. After the rain break, the situation was akin to a T20 game with Pakistan requiring another 182 runs in 19.3 overs. With nine wickets in hand, it was clearly plausible. They just had to keep their wits together, and smell the coffee. The rain break did not help the Kiwis’ cause as the Pakistani batters tore into their spinners on the rain kissed pitch. Once again, the rain came down, but it did not dampen the spirits of the Pakistanis. They were 21 runs ahead of the DLS par score after 25.3 overs. It stayed that way till the match was called off sending the Pakistani supporters into raptures. In the end, Fakhar ensured that Biryani will be on the menu tonight. Pakistan must not loose sight of the core problems that exist in the team. Babar cannot win important tosses every time, and Fakhar cannot win crucial matches all the time.

I'm not even a pundit, but I was arguing the same thing that Livingstone and Moeen should not be together in the team. Livingstone has not been firing at all and both him and Moeen aren't reliable batsmen. If Moeen is to play, they can open with him (now that everything is over). Better to have a specialist batsman instead of one of them

There's always "HUBRIS" factor with every teams at some point of time. D/L method : still no alternative even after 3 decades. The spectators or audience has not clue to whom to support 402 ( default to win ) or incredible chasing at 200/1.

England need to now look toward the 2025 ashes in Australia. Need to treat upcoming ODI's as Test practice for a team that can play overseas. Right now it looks like England are classic homeboys. From tomorrow just pick 6 of Englands best bats, the best all rounder that will definitely bowl 10 overs, the best wicketkeeper even if his bat avge is a tad lower, and 4 specialist bowlers who are definitely the best in their trade. No more fukking around with jack of all trades but master of nothing....they ALL need to be in great form at the same time for it to work, and thats only happens rarely such as in 2019.
@Bevan-z6b Жыл бұрын
England haven't won a single test in Australia more than a decade. Australia have better test bats, Great Bowlers, who has been doing well in Sheffield Sheild.

Same story you already knew about. England play guys who arnt particularly good at anything. They must believe there is a cumulative effect of playing an average bat that is also an average bowler...or an average w/keeper and average bat. You cannot play many of them but England play 4or5 every game. Massive difference to giving overs to guys like Root and Head. Both world class batsmen you cannot keep out, and average bowlers that play a role with their darts.
@purplespark8 Жыл бұрын
Yes. There are not many specialist batsmen in the team. Literally the first 3 wickets gone and you are into players who can win you matches, but are not consistent.
@thatsbollox Жыл бұрын
@@purplespark8 When you look at the top teams they tend to play the class bats and class bowlers, with few if any "kind of sort of maybe possibly" all rounders that are not top of their field at anything, It can only work when almost all the team is in great form and that rarely happens. Need to have a team that can win with half the team in form and no "ordinary" jack of all trades but master of nothing types.

England has always been bad in limited over cricket all the way since I can remember and I am 39, I didn’t see them winning the World Cup that they won but I have seen those players play even in the past I don’t think they were good, I think joe root has no business in 50 over cricket all he does is block block and they are a team piled up off below average all rounders with average in 30s and thinking you can win they probably got luck in one World Cup but that’s a recipe for disaster and it’s not sustainable.
