Excellent review, thanks Mark. Positives for the ABs: a win is a win,is a win. Team improvement against a very good England, at last we have a bench, and we played like the ABs of old, never giving up. Work-ons: discipline, I fear we are now a penalty magnet for referees and a YC yet again. ABs under even more scrutiny by officials. No answers to a blitz defence. BB for now, a bonus for him is his linking with Jordan, as you pointed out. We desperately need a centre pairing who can create and make breaks. Other thoughts from a sleep-addled brain: injuries are going to be a big factor for the rest of the tour, I’ve mentioned the bench, they were superior to England, Patty T and Dmac especially. It is starting to come together folks, if we can only cut the penalties.

One aspect of the AB game that has been criticized was their inability to perform in the last quarter. They have now shown that they can play the full 80+ minutes. That was the toughest and most cohesive 80 mins I've seen from this group in 2024. The English were agressive, fast and direct. They would have overwhelmed most teams playing like that at Twickenham. The ABs hung tough and kept their shape under the most extreme intensity. They've been losing shape previously. Sure, there were hugely frustrating plays and mistakes, always due to the English pressure, but there were also moments of brilliance. This was very much a step up performance in my view. On the lineout: It was operating well until Vaa'i went off. Vaa'i, as far as I understand calls the lineouts, and I noticed Aumua yelling for the call a few times after Vaa'i left. Aumua threw 7 lineout wins in a row, then there were a couple of wobbly ones, so it must be his fault?? At one point he had to ask twice what the call was, and Sititi came right up to him with the call - they won that lineout. Recall that England was stealing them left, right and centre in NZ when Taylor was throwing. Communication breakdown. Who was calling them? I'm more worried about Aumua's knee...

As always great analysis and review Mark. I was at the game at Twickenham and it was great day . NZ should really view this as a loss as it really should have been but always need a bit of luck in close games. Totally right about the midfield , Jordie clearly wasn’t fully fit and Reiko is wasted there. He’s a wing who doesn’t have the distribution skills for centre . Too many times NZ tried to push a pass that wasn’t on instead of going to ground and recycling the ball. What does it take for Razor to trust Proctor at centre? Paddy T needs to start as a better lineout target than Vaa. No real options if Taylor is injured as Amuua can’t throw . Kept going long for some unknown reason!

Tries win pies. England need to learn to score tries, and will not be able to depend on the All Blacks errors and cards for their points as their quality improves. In addition, England beating their chests when they win a tackle or a scrum just makes them look weak. They just look like they will win some little battles but are always going to lose the war.

True about the plastic energy totally agree. But about tries I think there is ample evidence to show that it's not tries that win games but points. ABs are obsessed with scoring in 5's but if your discipline is poor it doesn't matter how many tries you score they can keep up in three's. We need to drop this idea that tries are the only way and we need to play the game that's in front of us. Play the percentages if we need to. How many times have the abs ultimately lost a game that's been 3/4 tried to 1 on the other side? Attack at all costs is not working
@ShanePleasanceКүн бұрын
@@dmazingi indeed, but our brand of try scoring rugby will include fewer errors as we improve towards RWC.
@dmazingiКүн бұрын
@ShanePleasance but it's not about how good we are at scoring tries. I think we're already as good as we'll ever be against very good defences. Cos tried are not enough. We have to add more to our toolkit otherwise we'll always lose to a good defensive team that plays smarter footy. They will squeeze us with threes till we're panicking in the last minutes time and time gain. And our predictability in that regard is one reason that is making us easy to figure out.

NZ definitely looked dangerous/potent, great hard running and taking ball to the line, but the handling was terrible (as you say, the midfield). Ropey passes in traffic kept getting us into trouble. I was one of those who thought L brown should be there but was very disappointed with his game. i gave the centres the benefit of the doubt but it’s not working. I would say I didn’t agree with moving J Barrett from full back into the centres. And maybe it’s time for him to return to full back. If we play like this against Ireland and the French we will get another Rugby lesson. I would like to mention Ref. Angus is proving to be the best referee in the game. He’s calling what he sees and isn’t handing out cards like lollies. The rest of the Referees could learn from him.

Nice review Mark. Agree that the ABs got away with that one due to a couple of inspirational moments from the likes of Beauden Barrett, Jordan, McKenzie and Talea. Apart from that they were matched and outplayed in all positional combinations except the back three. Starting with the front rows, Williams was exposed against a quality player of lower stature who was able to get under him and drop his outside elbow...clever play by the English, they'd obviously prepared for this when they saw that DeGroot had been disciplined out of the game. Lomax did well and Aumua was very industrious about the park and in the clean outs and tight stuff. I feel a couple of those wayward throws to the lineout may have been about miscommunication and timing of the jumps more than his throw...they happened when Tupou Vai'i came off, who until then had been calling the option. Tu'ungafasi was good in the scrum but didn't add much elsewhere where again his accuracy let him down...definitely not an impact player. Next week, order should be restored with DeGroot starting alongside Aumua (looks like Taylor's head knock will put him out of contention for at east 3 weeks) and Lomax and Williams, Bell and Tosi coming off the bench. As for the second row. Scooter grew into this game but is not in great form. His captaincy was also rather understated as he did not drill discipline into his team when it was required and was not communicating with his brother Jordie (VC) who should have been letting him know that the English were constantly offside out wide and not being picked up for it by the ref or his touch judges. As for Tupou Vai'i, this was his chance to go head to head with the player he should be modeling his game on (Etoji) and he came up a distant second. This was a disappointing performance from him after his improvement over the Championship. Maybe he picked up an early ankle injury and was struggling with it until he was replaced early in the second half. Fabian Holland, who is now eligible for AB selection, had a man-of-the match performance for the AB VX against Munster. If Vai'i is injured, he could be brought in to cover lock and maybe used off the bench against Ireland and/or given a cap against Italy...he looks ready for the step up. Tuipulotu was immense off the bench, a real impact player and leader for the final 30. I'll forgive him spilling the pill in front of the sticks with a minute remaining...but only because Ford missed the droppie. As for the loosies. I am sick and tired of one-eyed AB fans lauding this loose trio as if we finally have the "balance" right. Complete nonsense. The English trio were far better balanced and effective as a unit...they knew their roles and complimented each other. Sititi was immense throughout this game but should be at 8. The ABs packed him down at 8 towards the end of the game to good effect. Savea should be back at 7 where he can be more effective shutting down the flyhalf, jackling the pill, and supporting his centers. Finau has not shown the accuracy needed at this level to cement himself at 6 and while Blackadder is out...and assuming Vai'i's ankle isn't too bad and will be right for next week...we should be be playing Vai'i at blindside and bringing Darry in to start at lock with Tuipulotu coming off the bench for his impact and end-of-game leadership. I wish Holland was in the squad, cos I'd love to see the big man given a go against the Irish second row. As for Sam Cane, he is a grinder and is now too slow to be playing openside. Also, he does not have great hands and is a liability on the attacking side of the ball except in the clean out. He looks rooted to the ground when he receives the ball...Savea should be there with someone like Lakai or Kirifi coming off the bench. Kirifi had a great game against Munster...I know the AB's are obsessed about size, but he's no smaller than Ben Earl or Kwagga Smith and probably faster and just as strong. As for the fly-half position, both Ratima and Roigard had good games. I'd start Roigard against Ireland because he's like a fourth loosie who can run like a center. He may be slightly slower off the deck than Ratima -- though nowhere near as slow as someone like Christie -- but his passes are like bullets. Ratima, with his quickness off the deck and ability to see space would be great against a tiring Ireland...especially if paired with McKenzie late in the game. But did you see what Hotham did off the bench against Munster? If one of our scrummies goes down Hotham is more than ready...probably should be there now ahead of TJ. Beauden Barrett played well at 10 and was clearly trying to get the ball out wide. England was cutting down his options using their rush defense and being allowed to get away with clamping down from an offside position in the centers. He will need to improve his positional kicking against the Irish, especially his exits from the 22...though he wasn't given much time or help to do this against the English. Scott Hansen needs to take a good look at himself here because the coaching and strategy is clearly not what it should be...and they will have to sort that out before they face the Irish and French. If Beauden is not ruled out for his head knock, he should be given the start against Ireland. If he is ruled out, then Plummer should be brought in and started...he had a very good game against Munster. Josh Jacomb or Reuben Love can start for the AB VX against Georgia. Keep McKenzie for the final 25. And now to the centers, Jordie has been out for a while with his knee injury. This was his first game in six weeks and it showed. While he did little wrong, he did not create much or take the pressure off his brother to clear the ABs 22 with well placed long range kicking...is his knee 100%? Rieko was again woeful...even before his hand was injured he was having a shocker. Yes, yes, he is a very good defender...but a center needs to see space, create space, or put his outside wingers and FB into space...he has no eye for space and does not distribute the pill. It was Sititi that put Talea into space and McKenzie who saw the space when Talea scored his second. Rieko also blew a couple of gimmie opportunities by holding on to the ball or going to the wrong side when the line was opened up for those outside him. He's not a center. Time to give Proctor the nod. If Rieko's hand rules him out completely for next week, it's time to bring Quentin Tupaea back into the AB fold as he can play both 12 and 13. And why oh why is Havili even in the squad...that's right, Razor remembers his golden days at the Crusaders...get over it Razor...make the call. Now to the back trio. Jordan showed that he may be coming into some form at the back. He still needs to be better under the high ball and kick long when running out is not a wise option and he gets himself isolated without support. He could also inject himself more on attack, though his timing appears to be there and his lines are superb when he does inject himself. I agree with Mark that Talea is best when he is able to stay out wide and not have to get involved too much with the inside traffic. Now, if we just had a center who could run a tramline and get him the ball in space...imagine what he could do. Same goes for Caleb. He was forced to come inside to look for some ball and his injections were rather labored. The English offside rush defense may have had something to do with that though I tend to think its also a matter of unimaginative coaching. I'm pointing the finger at Scott Hansen here...he's no Tony Brown. Yes Scott Hansen, you and Razor both need to step up.

A very entertaining game that went down to the wire and a great start to this series. England...very close but no cigar and they will be kicking themselves for not nailing it at the end. I feel sorry for Ford who on another day would have scored those but they were very high pressure kicks. Sometimes they go over and other times they don't. One problem for them was that despite the territorial advantage they really did not look like they were going to score anymore tries and were relying very much on the AB's giving away penalties. In saying that though....that was a very good performance by them today. Smith was excellent and that was indeed a head scratcher as to why they took him off. I also thought Itoje, Earl and Spencer played really well. As for the AB's...I still see clunkiness in the team as a whole but they have players that can produce a bit of magic out of nowhere. Jordan (a class act), Sittiti (another class act) and Telea (particularly that excellent 2nd try) were brilliant today. And yes...Dmack proved today that he is a great impact player. That last conversion under pressure was top notch. I still think though they are going to have to step up yet again for the Ireland game. I'm sure Andy Farrell was watching that with great interest and is already coming up with a plan to exploit some of the chinks in that AB armour. Ireland will never underestimate the AB's and recent fixtures between these two have always been spicy. Looking forward to hearing your preview of that one and what the AB's need to do to beat Ireland and what Ireland need to do to beat the AB's. One thing I reckon I can guarantee though...it will be another classic nail biter! Can't wait!

Hi guys, Mark agree with u Razor is only looking at 2024 with his selection of B Barrett and a few others. I think Asafo had a good game but his line outs kept Eng in the game to a certain extend keeping the ABs under unnecessary pressure! Eng with their false runners running into ABs defenders also cost us a good few points. Yes Eng's defense was good, but I think with those penalties the ABs absorbed the pressure and were actually very good, I have to criticize the ref here a bit cause quite a few occasions Eng players were hanging on the offside line like Feyi W. and Maro closing down the ABs going on attacking runs. In my opinion Rieko and Ardie had better games showing their worth. Infact all the ABs played well besides Caleb who didn't get a lot of ball in this game and Jordie not being 100% game fit. I think Cortez will have learnt a valuable lesson in this game where he gifted Eng 7 points. Again my sentiment from ur previous show with the words this game was on a knife edge. ABs mistakes kept Eng in the game! But Eng is my wildcard team for future many big rugby nations will fall to them in the coming years if they sort out a few issues, but I think Razor has something good going for this ABs side. Funny thing is I think the spine of the team is so crucial they have to have the requisite skill set. You can't have a ten who can't kick or a hooker who can't throw. Even if that hooker is good ball in hand throwing and hooking is literally his core job.

I believe one of the reasons Marcus Smith was taken off was because his poor drop goal attempts earlier in the game, and yes coach looking for a more steady 10 to close it out. I hear you have not been a big fan of Mark Talea this year (and fair enough based on what he has dished up) but I thought he had a good game. Obviously because of a full plate of meat pies, but he also took a good high ball. Maybe he is still to develop into a better player over time?
@insiderugbywithmarkКүн бұрын
@mkc68 thanks so much for the comment, my responses. Re Marcus Smith, ironically the man who kicked a drop goal for England to beat Ireland at Twickenham last year was pulled from the game while he also had a 100% goal kicking percentage. Mark Teleá Yes, I havent been a fan, and still arent until I see more consistency. As I mentioned in the video, when he plays in his lane out wide and with Jordan at Fullback and BB calling the shots he doesnt do his snaking lateral running to nowhere, this is the version we saw this weekend I prefer. I hope that clarifies my thoughts.

I wish someone would tell Beaudie to put the boot away sometimes. It's like he can't touch the ball without needing to put a foot to it. So much talent but not the type of game manager we need. I thought Razor would have axed the failed Reiko at centre experiment by now.

All Blacks execution, and disciple is still a major issue. Why does BB always try and grubber kick through - always fluffs it up, and then puts pressure on them due to them panicking. Some of their aging players need to be moved on, now rather than later.

A lot of those ABs hadn't played a game in many weeks. Were Jordie and Ioane that bad? Its about doing your core roles well with few mistakes. In general, they went forward and both had a couple of brilliant moments. Seems like people think that they should be making line breaks every time they run the ball. Not even an in form Nonu would be so effective these days with modern defence. Agree that ALB added very little for someone with his experience. Who do you suggest are fresh contenders for the midfield outside Proctor? Havili?! Haha.... i already know the answer on that one.
@insiderugbywithmarkКүн бұрын
@mikescudder4621 as a matter of interest, did you happen to watch Scotland v Fiji and see how No 12 Tuipolotu is playing for Scotland, brilliant stuff, and he nearly does make a difference on every play. Compare that to J Barrett and ALB its night and day. Proctor at 13 and keep him there to build hid confidence, and I winding back the clock to July 2024 I would had tried Clarke at 12 and perhaps we uncover the next Nonu.

Crikey, the AB's were doing their level best to loose that game. 1st Half scrums pretty equal with a 50/50 here and there, but the calls going Eng way. Still a good contest. Pretty much like the rest of that half, NZ playing Eng and the bounce of the ball not going their way. Shit happens. Penalties, good god, when you are practically giving a penalty away every 5 minutes in the 1st half, you really are not supposed to win! What was it at half time,,, , 8vs2 against the AB's? Final count was was 10 or 11 v 7 ish at full time. England looked liked they started to run out of steam in the 2nd half,, amplified by the front row changes. Eng's only try from an intercept, and some calm thinking from Smith. They were only ever in the game as a result of the Kiwi penalty count, and that was not pressure. Just rubbish discipline and maybe a blind eye on the Eng off side line. 3 tries to 1. Bank it! Need to get those lineouts sorted though. There were some times when they threw so long over the back, why not just secure the ball up front with a short throw and work from there? Best of luck for the rest of the series!!

When are the AB's going to learn that playing the same old so called senior AB's for the past 5yrs will produce the same results, a hooker who crashes when the pressure is on, 2 out 3 loose forwards, 7 & 8 that are now average, a 10, that kicks like a goose, as he has no ideas, 12 & 13 that are club rugby standard or do not pass, a replacement 10 that gets cleaned out in defense, the senior lock/capt who should be replace. SO, the spin except 9 & 15 needs to all go. We do not know how good any other player/s is/are as these junket players are clinging on.
