English Bulldog struggles with long walks

It's not that Titus the English Bulldog is lazy, he just isn't a fan of "long" walks. When he needs a break he does not hesitate to lay down on the sidewalk right where he is. Cute! Credit to 'titusbulldog'.

This is why bulldogs are the perfect apartment dog. Except this one is overweight and panting heavily in the heat. Not sure if the owner knows about bulldogs' need to be at the perfect weight because of their shoulder issues.

NEVER force a bulldog to a long walk, to play for too long, to run, or to be under heat for more than just a few minutes, they overheat very fast and they could even die.

@@filipusstewart you will love him/her. They are lovely dogs, full of personality. I have been lucky with Monte's health; he turns 10 in July. You just need to be careful, as they are more work than other dogs.

yup, i have a french bulldog, some years ago i met a guy in a park and he told me that out of nowhere his frenchie had a heart attack and died in that same park some week prior, always been cautious since, even tho the dog is in good shape for his age

Once, I walked my friend's English bulldog and on the way back I started to worry that he was going to drop dead on me. I hadn't thought about how much less stamina a dog of that build would have compared to other breeds! Fortunately he survived, but he was super exhausted. Moral of the story-- if your route goes in one direction and then doubles back, make sure you know your bulldog's limits!

He is overweight. He is NOT lazy. The poor guy is HOT and you do not recognize the warning signs. BULLDOGS DO NOT TOLERATE HEAT. Get a large pan of water and put some ice cubes in it. Put his paws in it and it will cool him off. They do not sweat. the only way they release heat from their bodies is from their breath and their paw pads. Please read up on this breed. I know you love your dog but please learn about them. They need different TLC from other dog breeds.

We take our English Bulldog on walks too. We bring water. Even when it is cooler, he does the same thing your Bulldog does. Sometimes, I have to get the car to pick him up. I always bring water in a backpack. Even when it is in the evening - around 78 degrees and no sun - our Bulldog still wants to sit. lol

It's because they overheat very fast and due to the short trachea find breathing hard, I have 2 English bulldogs and i live in Florida i take them out very early and late at night for a short walk to mitigate the heat issue, plus they need very little exercise and sleep a lot. I prefer to play tug rope with them inside our air conditioned house they enjoy that more. Also your harness is very loose it's possible he might slip out of it if he ducks his head and pulls backward, one of mine used to do that trick... but kudos for using a harness its really critical all bulldog owners use them instead of collars.

Paul Masters, I'm in Florida 2, I agree with all you said. AS for the harness, I think his may be on backwards! LOL The portion that goes around the neck - is around his shoulders! Big oops on that one! Ask a bully owner to help you adjust it - but first make sure THEIR bully's halter looks like it fits properly!

He's hot. I have a bulldog, and he gets overheated on walks really fast...even in weather that's not super warm. Bring some ice water, and a collapsible bowl with you on walks...also ruffwear swamp cooler vests work great too. Flat faced dogs cant release their body heat like regular dogs can.

amanda lou TRUE!! Bulldogs only need 30 minutes of exercise a day and are prone to heatstroke. They need temps anywhere in between 68 to 74 degrees. Bulldogs are more lapdogs than anything else.

Yeah it really annoys me when I see people pushing their English Bulldogs to walk longer than around 30 minutes. Their bodies just can't handle it, and they know it which is why they rest. If you wanted a dog that would go on long walks you shouldn't have gotten an English bulldog

cassiemichelle03 I have two english bulldog (a male and female) they can walk and run for hours but only if the wather helps them. I took mine for longs walks when the temperature is less than 10 degrees celcius. longs walks of about 4 to 5 hours. but you are right if the dog is overheated he will try to rest to let his temperature go down a bit. the owner should not push him to keep walking when he tries to rest. i know about lots of dogs where killed for their owners for that.

BaxterBully 30 minutes of exercise a day..you do NOT over work a flat faced dog,unless you like it suffering and want it to die. Next time your car over heats, keep driving it,it's the same dam thing as making a english bulldog walking once it reaches its limit

BaxterBully is right and wrong on this. This bulldog is so out of shape he cant take super long walks. Bona0608 is right on that. But I believe Baxter's point is that the dog needs a health intervention, which it does. The dog is letting his master know he does not want to walk further - so stop. But if the owner were to have his bully lose about 10% of its body weight - and do this by 1. stopping all human food treats at table, 2. sticking to a good food, measured out, limiting treats to 3 a day - and 3. giving multiple short walks daily (treat when he gets home). If you have any question ask your vet. Generally, if you run your hand over his rib cage, can feel there is something solid in there but you cant easily count each rib, you are ok. Behind his rib cage there should be an area that is slightly smaller than the rib cage (bottom and sides). If you don't see that - help him/her drop a few pounds. Let the dog's behavior tell you how he/she is doing. If you see a happier more active pet - then you know you did well. That's how I got my bulldogs to live 50% longer than the 8 years the breed is advertised as an average life expectancy. Any time you are not sure - talk to your vet. P.S. if your dogs are maintained at a healthy weight, you can treat them more! I would break the rules only for pizza. My bullies got the crust (I never ate that), but not all at one time. i'd refrigerate the extra and use as treats over 2-3 days. Don't worry how hard they got, the bullies LOVED crunching them up! You'd keep your friend about 4 years longer doing this guys - its soooo worth it!

I would revise the hour/temperature of the walk as well as the speed, length and duration of the walk, the bulldog is a very specific kind of Dog, and it requires a very specific kind of owner

Remember they have short arms and legs. Don't take them out for to long of a walk. If your dog needs to sit and catch their breath. Please allow them to catch their breath. Put yourself in their place. How would you feel if you were the dog? Also carry a bottled water with you. Remember they don't have a voice to tell us to stop and listen to their limits.

Mine English Bulldog just walked to my neighbors house and back, and she was done. Mine did that because she had heart warms, make sure that yours is healthy, and please do not pushed, some of them just do it like that, because their lack of air going into their nostrils.

It’s also because we over feed them, I have two bulldogs and one previously, and the males I had were fit no belly and they were more athletic then most Bully’s but they still could not tolerate heat. I once had to carry my first bulldog home during the summer.

Isn’t it obvious to you? Are you heartless or ignorant? The poor guy is exhausted and hot and is begging you to let him rest. He also can remember when he was a puppy and was carried when he couldn’t keep up. My Shih Tzu is obviously not as heavy as a bulldog, but she is 15 yrs. old, and although she loves to walk, she tires quickly. We’ve been together for every day of her life and rather than disappoint her or carry her (I’m now15 yrs older and tire quickly too) I push a baby stroller on our walks so that she can ride comfortably home when we are both tired. She loves it and I love seeing her happy and safe. And I never take her for walks during hot weather. Appreciate your pets’ joy and they will give you joy for a longer time. Irishnphx

I had an English Bulldog ( Hoss ) that would walk half way to the mail box with me. I would let him sit where he wanted and I would get the mail and he would be rested enough to make the 30 yard trip back to the house.

They can't take heat and they dont have the stamina that other dog breeds have, but there are still the best breed if your looking for a loyal cuddle bug who will love you to the moon and back. They are worth the extra maintenance and the fact they have certain constraints to them other dogs don't have. I just love everything about them. I wouldn't take them on a longer than 15 min walk and never when it's hot out. They need to stay cool.

Titus is a fine looking bulldog. Like most Bulldogs- not inclined to go for distance walks (but get the unpredictable zoomies-watch out-bursts of serious energy for about 3 minutes every few days.) Best summed up- as on average they have a high leisure quotient. Bring a wagon and some chew ice and cold cement.

Go figure. When you breed a dog to have virtually no effective mechanisms to cool down (a proper length muzzle) AND overfeed it to the point of obesity, this is what you get. This shouldn't be celebrated as "cute" or whimsical, the bulldog is not being lazy he simply can't cope with a task most dogs could and should be able to do easily.

He's overheating. They make special vests for these dogs that you can put in the freezer. It keeps them cool. We own an English Bulldog, and we have to do this. I recommend Fromm's dog food as well. It'll keep this poor fellow's weight down.

Titus is a lovely fellow. My Monte is similar in that he takes a break when he needs to. These guys have little stamina so it is normal for them. Such loveable dogs!

British Bulldogs are not built for long walks and this particular Bulldog is over weight. Before purchasing a Bulldog read up on the breed, they need special care and attention and it pains me to see this Bulldog suffering because he is well over weight, its cruel and bad ownership.

They are really lazy. I have two and one of them would lie down on her side and act like she is dying of exhaustion! Guess where she does this? Right outside our door, she has not even left the building! What we have to do is to carry her outside and then let her walk back bec she will always walk when it's going back to the condo. Hilarious stubborn lumps of lard. Love them to pieces!
