Nice tips! What I have been taught about comma is that we usually use a comma between two independent sentences as you mentioned in this video. After the comma, to connect two sentences, we can use "FAN BOYS" (for, and, neither, but, or, yet, so) depends on how those sentences are related to eachother. Thanks again Mark for your awesome videos!

Waaaaay back when I was at primary school in the 70s (UK) we were taught that we never place a comma before 'and' or 'but'. When I worked with children in the classroom some 20 years later, it was completely different. It's fascinating to see how the 'rules' change.

I can remember one comma rule. In 'if' sentence: If the sentence starts with 'if', you have to use the comma, otherwise you don't. E.g. If I have some money, I will buy a book. I will buy a book if I have some money.

Good lesson Mr.Mark! Well,I've been taught in my mother tong that commas are used to make a brief pause from which there would be more cohesion in between sentences,in other words,it's no different from one of your opinions(giggles).so,whenever I realise the opportunity to use it,I make the most of it,haha.

Hi Mark, I think the commas are really important when we are writing and reading ,because the comma made the sentence clear. Sometimes , the sentence has different means that it has a comma or has not a comma.Thanks for your sharing. Best wishes,

The phrase "before he left, he gave me a gift" has a comma just to indicate that the natural word order (he gave me a gift before he left) has been changed/inverted. The three words rule makes no sense if the phrase above were a bit different: "before he left THE HOUSE, he gave me a gift".
@Pidalin
@Pidalin 4 жыл бұрын
I still consider funny how English need to write subject again in second part of that sentence, such wasting of space. :-D In my language we don't need subject at all in this example. :-D It would be: "Before left, gave me a gift." You know who so you don't have to write that. But English doesn't have information about male/female in words, that's the problem.
@pierreramos3296
@pierreramos3296 4 жыл бұрын
@@Pidalin I know what tou mean! In Portuguese (my primary language) you donnot necessary need to state 'who does something' in a sentence for the verb form already indicates it...and it happens because Portuguese originated its verb conjugation from Latin, which requires a different verb-ending depending on the subject performing the action.
@Pidalin
@Pidalin 4 жыл бұрын
My mother language is Czech. I think English is special in this case because in other languages I don't hear HE, SHE etc...constantly again and again so I guess most of european languages work like our languages and not like English. English has same endings in most of situations so it can't work there. In my language we have MŮŽEŠ (you can), MŮŽU (I can), MŮŽEME (we can), MŮŽETE (you can - plural form) etc....everything just variations of word can without nessesery subject in sentence.

I usually put comma after introduction,it's seems easy to understand my sentence or at least have attention on it.Putting right punctuation and using capital alphabet at the beginning of sentences are makes something we want to deliver more interesting. If we using it to write story,its raising emotion the readers as well. Good morning ,Sir.It's very great morning to see sunrise.

I always thought I am crazy when I am using commas before BUT and other pronouns and now, I finally know I am not crazy, becuase it works almost same as in my language. Except we don't need comma if there is and in most of situations. I see now that using comma before pronouns is not correct always, but still better than don't using them at all. I stopped using comma before SO in English few years ago, because many people were saying it's wrong to me. There is big difference between English and my language, because we don't need subject in sentence. But mostly, commas are there, where you would lower your voice in spoken form, as you said. The craziest thing in Czech language is sentence inserted into sentence (I have no idea how to call it in English) so if you have sentence like "I went from work, as I am going every day, and I bought bread in bakery." You have to use commas, because that sentence works even without that.: "I went from work and I bought bread in bakery." Do you think English is crazy? Try to learn this. :-D That about old rules is true even in my language, if I would write something really correctly (as we have to in school), then there would be milion commas in one sentence. :-D That's why they teaching us not using complicated sentences, you should write simply and clearly. 1:05 - this is vice versa than in my languge, you have to separate sentences by comma in my language and also there is pause in speaking. But using ; is also common in books, it's probably really more powerfull. :-D That example from 1:00 is nice example of how diferent English is, because in that second part (he really enjoyed it) we don't need subject again in my language and maybe that's why there have to be comma.In my language, it would be like (direct translate): "He ate the cake, really enjoyed it." You know who so you don't need to write it again. But there would be AND instead of comma in this example in most of situations, it's more natural.

Hahaha, thank you, Mark. 😘😘 I am feeling honoured. It seems that the lesson has been made especially for me. I know, I am the one who uses comes a lot while writing. It is not a problem for me to put ten of them in one sentence. As for your question, I have never been taught any punctuation rules. It so happened that I've been using them more intuitively and relying on common sense, that is all things that you mentioned in the video such as natural poses and separating different subjects. (I guess, I put enough commas in this sentence to confuse any native speaker. Hehe)

Is it important in your language? Probably yes So it's probably important even in English. :-D If you write long sentence (I mean more sentences in one sentence, OMG stupid English) and not using commas, it will be total mess and it could mean something totaly different. I hate this when I have some email from our owner in work with something what we have to immediately do and it's like full A4 without commas. You still have to go up to office and ask him what the hell it means. By the way, that's why companies in ex communistic countries can't work so effective, because bussines tradition was stopped for 40 years and today owners have sometimes worse education than their workers. :-D
